Course No.: EE 232
Sheet [1]
Phasors and Resonance Response
1 In a linear circuit, the voltage source is

vs = 12 sin (103t + 24) V

(a) What is the angular frequency of the voltage?

(b) What is the frequency of the source?
(c) Find the period of the voltage.
(d) Express vs in cosine form.
(e) Determine vs at t = 2.5 ms.

2 A current source in a linear circuit has

is = 8 cos(500t - 25) A

(a) What is the amplitude of the current?

(b) What is the angular frequency?
(c) Find the frequency of the current.
(d) Calculate is at t = 2 ms.

3 For the following pairs of sinusoids, determine which one leads and by how
much.

(a) v(t) = 10 cos(4t - 60) and i(t) = 4 sin(4t + 50)

(b) v1(t) = 4 cos(377t + 10) and v2(t) = -20 cos377t
(c) x(t) = 13 cos2t + 5 sin2t and y(t) = 15 cos(2t - 11.8)

4 Calculate these complex numbers and express your results in rectangular

form:

8- 20o 10
(a) 2 + j 3 - j 4 + -5 + j12
( )( )
(b) 10 + (850)(5 - j12)
5 Obtain the sinusoids corresponding to each of the following phasors:

(a) V1 = 6015,  = 1
(b) V2 = 6 + j8,  = 40
(c) I1 = 2.8 e-j/3,  = 377
(d) I2 = -0.5 - j1.2,  = 103

6 Transform the following sinusoids to phasors:

(a) -10 cos(4t + 75)

(b) 5 sin(20t - 10)
(c) 4 cos2t + 3 sin2t

7 A current source of i(t) = 10 sin (377t + 30) A is applied to a single-element

load. The resulting voltage across the element is v(t) = - 65 cos(377t + 120)
V. What type of element is this? Calculate its value.

8 If vs = 5 cos 2t V in the circuit of Fig., find vo.

9 Calculate vo(t) in the circuit in Fig.

10 A capacitor in series with a 66-ohm resistor is connected to a 120-V, 60-Hz

source. If the impedance of the circuit is 116 ohm, determine the size of the
capacitor.
11 Consider the phase-shifting circuit in Fig. Let Vi = 120 V operating at 60 Hz.
Find:

(a) Vo when R is maximum

(b) Vo when R is minimum
(c) value of R that will produce a phase shift of 45 V.

12 A series audio circuit is shown in Fig.

(a) What is the impedance of the circuit?

(b) If the frequency were halved, what would be the impedance of the circuit?

13 An industrial load is modeled as a series combination of a capacitance and a

resistance as shown in Fig. Calculate the value of an inductance L across the
series combination so that the net impedance is resistive at a frequency of
5 MHz.
14 What value of  will cause the forced response vo in Fig. to be zero?

15 A power transmission system is modeled as shown in Fig. 9.92. Given the

source voltage
Vs = 1150 V, source impedance
Zs = 1 + j0.5 , line impedance
Zt = 0.4 + j0.3 , and load impedance
ZL = 23.2 + j18.9 , find the load current IL.

16 For each of the circuits in Fig., find Vo/Vi for  = 0,  → , and

 2 = 1/LC.
