The document discusses different medical coding systems and provides case studies to demonstrate when each would be used. ICD-CM codes are used to record diagnoses, CPT codes record outpatient medical procedures, ICD-10-PCS codes inpatient procedures, and HCPCS codes anything not covered by CPT. Case study 1 demonstrating an outpatient visit would use CPT codes, while case study 2 ordering tests would also use CPT codes. Case study 3 positively identifying influenza would use ICD-10-CM codes, and case study 4 of an inpatient tonsillectomy would use ICD-10-PCS codes.

PCS, and HCPCS.

1. ICD-CM: codes diagnoses for physician offices, hospital in/out patients

2. CPT: Current Procedure Terminology. Codes medical procedures for physician offices and hospital outpatients
3. ICD-10-PCS: codes medical procedures for hospital inpatients
4. HCPCS: Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System. If it’s not in the CPT book, it is in HCPCS

Case Study 1

detailed history with physical examination is performed. What coding system is used in this scenario?

CPT

Case Study 2
Upon review of the symptoms, the provider orders a rapid strep test and a rapid flu test. What coding system is used
in this scenario?
CPT

Case Study 3
The results of the rapid strep test were negative, but the rapid flu test was positive for the influenza virus, type A. What
coding system is used in this scenario?
ICD-10-CM

Case Study 4
