- Grooved Piping System :
At the Contractor's option, grooved pipes and valves may be used instead of
welded pipes, in the case the product shall conform with ANSI-B - 31.1,
B - 31.9, ASME, UL/FM, IAPMO or BOCA and shall have ISO 9001
Certification :
d. The grooved Pipe System shall be able to conform with the same
pressure test procedures for welded pipes as per Specifications.
- Contractor shall provide access doors in duct systems for future use of duct
cleaning equipment and tools.

CHILLED WATER DISTRIBUTION
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.ア DESCRIPTION
A. Scope
1. Supply and install pipe minimum class 15 bar and used in Kuwait, fittings
complete in accordance with the requirements of the contract documents, supply and install all
required piping and gate valves to flush the piping system.
2. Type of pipe, and fittings specified in this section includes the following.

1.エ QUALITY ASSURANCE
I. Regulatory Requirements
1. Installation as described in manufacturers installation manual, covered under
Australian Standard AS 3690.
2. Manufacturing according to AS 3518 (Parts 1 and 2) and AS 3855- 94.
3. Pipes should be ISO 9002 certified.
4. The layout of all pipework shall be checked on site prior to installation and all care
shall be taken to ensure a neat and workmanship appearance of the installation.
5. Supplier of the materials shall be involved in continuous inspection.
II. Support
1. The maximum distance between pipe supports shall be in accordance with the
manufacturer’s recommendations.
2. The width of the pipe supports shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
3. Pipe supports shall not exert undue pressure on the pipe wall or deform the pipe
wall against the clamp or support.
III. Thermal Expansion
1. Adequate care shall be taken to accommodate expansion and contraction of pipes.
2. Expansion loops and/or expansion compensators shall be acceptable means to
accommodate thermal movement.
3. Contractor shall carry out a total pipework analysis and submit calculation along
with selection data compensation devices for approval by the engineer.
1.オ SUBMITTALS
I. Product Data
Submit catalogue cuts specification installation instruction and dimensioned drawings
for each type of pipe and fittings. Submit piping schedule showing manufacturer, pipe
weight, fitting type, and joint type for each piping system.

2.カ PIPE FITTINGS
A. Pipe fittings shall be welding type of the same material / strength as pipes.
B. Prefabricated fittings (standard or mitred type) supplied by the piping system
manufacturers may be used, where appropriate, subject to the approval of the
Engineer.
2.キ PIPE JOINTS AND ACCESSORIES
A. Joints shall be cold cement welded, after due preparation, using welding materials
approved by the Engineer and recommended by manufacturers.
B. Sheathing / insulation of joints shall be executed using kits supplied by the piping
system manufacturer, comprising the following, for each type and size of joint:
1. HDPE sleeves and / or muffs, fabricated from steel and coated with
HDPE
2. Insulation supplied by the piping system manufacturer, in two parts, for
each type and size of joints.

3. Accessories for plugging, injection of insulation etc.

2.ク EXPANSION COMPENSATION
A. Contractor shall calculate expansion / contraction and provide for all required
appurtenances, in his tender.
B. Where, expansion compensation is not required, in the opinion of the piping
system manufacturer; this shall be clearly stated in the tender and correlated with
warranty requirements.
C. Expansion calculations shall be based on:
1. Heating applications: 5 °C (40 °F) installation temperature to 60 °C (140
°F) for domestic hot water, and 82 °C (180 °F) for hot water heating and
high temperature domestic hot water plus 30 percent safety factor
2. Cooling applications: 65 °C (150 °F) installation temperature for exposed
piping and 46 °C (115 °F) installation temperature for indoor piping to 5
°C (40 °F) for domestic cold water and chilled water plus 30 percent
safety factor
D. Piping expansion / contraction shall be accommodated by providing one or more of
the following, as appropriate:
1. Directional changes: Bends and U-loops shall be provided along each
sector. Pipework shall be anchored at mid-points of long straight runs to
direct expansion / contraction towards bends and / or U-loops
2. Heat Pre-stressing: Pipework shall be cooled / heated to a temperature,
corresponding to middle of service range, during installation; further
expansion / contraction being absorbed by the piping itself
3. Expansion joints: Custom fabricated joints comprising two (2) ply
stainless steel bellows, carbon steel shrouds and welding ends, internal
flow liners, anti-torque device, limit stops etc. as appropriate shall be
provided. After putting the system into service, the expansion joint shall
be locked by welding; leaving further expansion / contraction to be
absorbed by the piping itself
E. Piping shall be covered with foam pads made from granulated, compressed, soft
polyurethane foam with a density of approx. 100 kg/m3, in expansion zones; to
accommodate movements due to expansion / contraction. This shall generally be
used at bends, service connections and similar areas.
2.ケ VALVES
A. General
1. Manufacturers proprietary products may be used, in directly buried
applications, superseding these specifications
2. Valves installed in accessible locations shall have flanged or otherwise
de-mountable ends, irrespective of size and / or location
3. One key / wrench of appropriate size shall be provided for each lever
operated valve installed
4. Geared operators shall be provided for valves, 200 mm (8 inch) and
larger in size

5. Valves and appurtenances shall be rated for 1379 kPa (200 psig) working
water pressure at ambient temperature. Higher pressure rated valves may be
selected to meet the valve construction features, where required
B. Gate valves: Iron body bronze mounted (IBBM) valve with outside screw and yoke
(OS&Y), solid wedge, renewable seat and flanged ends.
C. Butterfly valves: Ductile iron, semi / full lug body with long neck; lever / key / gear
operated, Aluminium bronze disk; EPDM liner vulcanised to the body; monel /
stainless steel shaft with memory stops; suitable for installation between flanges.
D. Globe valves: Cast steel body, hand wheel operated, renewable screwed in body
seats, stainless steel, teflon seat and stuffing box seals, flanged ends.
E. Check valves: Cast steel body, renewable screwed in body seats, spring loaded,
stainless steel, renewable disc, flanged ends.
F. Ball valves: Cast steel body; lever or key operated, stainless steel, full bore,
floating ball; Teflon seat and stuffing box seals; flanged / welding spigot ends.
G. Air Relief Valves: Bronze body with non-ferrous float and internal working parts.
Construction shall be take-apart type for easy maintenance. Outlet shall be tapped
for connection to drain line.

H. Vacuum relief valve: Pressure type, diaphragm-operated valve with large ports to
admit air to the pipe, when line pressure is below atmospheric. Cast Iron body
with bronze trim, nylon reinforced diaphragm and threaded ends.

2.コ SPECIALITIES
I. These shall generally be designed by the manufacturer, fabricated at the factory and
supplied complete with accessories.
B. Curved pipes may be used as required and appropriate and these shall be
fabricated at the factory or at the site using equipment supplied by the
manufacturer.
C. Prefabricated bends shall be used at crossovers, service
connections etc. as appropriate.
D. Pipe anchor: A piece of pre-insulated pipe with a puddle made of HDPE sheets
attached to the sheath by welding. Pipe shall be anchored by embedding the puddle
in mass concrete of appropriate size and shape.
E. Wall sleeve: Corrugated sleeve, manufactured from high-density rubber, covering
the pipe over the entire thickness of the wall.
F. Reducing ring: Corrugated, split sleeve manufactured from plastic coated steel, of
thickness equal to the annular space between jackets of the large and small pipes.
Factory prefabricated reduction units shall be used for larger pipes.
G. End cap: HDPE heat shrink sleeve, covering the jacket and inner pipe externally,
for closing exposed ends of insulation and to prevent the entry of moisture into the
polyurethane form.
H. End muff: HDPE sleeve with one end closed along with a heat shrink sleeve for
joining to the pipe sheath. The assembly shall be filled with Polyurethane
insulation, supplied by the manufacturer, in a manner similar to that of pipe joints.

I. Terminations: Prefabricated pipes for use entry to valve chambers, buildings etc.
with accessories such as end caps, wall sleeves, end muffs etc. as appropriate.
2.15 WARRANTY
A. Warranty certificate duly registered with the manufacturer shall be furnished to the
Engineer as a prerequisite for issuance of substantial completion certificate.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.ア COORDINATION
A. Contractor shall study all drawings and specifications and familiarise with the
structural and architectural details and the work of other trades.
B. Contractor shall ensure that the work under this section shall not interfere with
those of other trades and are compatible with the architectural finishes prior to
placing orders, fabrication and installation.
C. Electrical power supply requirements and location and type of the interface shall
be co-ordinated with the Electrical Works of the project. Information as required
by MEW, for obtaining approvals, shall be furnished.
D. Contractor shall furnish templates, patterns, setting out plans and other items for
incorporation in works of other trades and ensure the placement of sleeves, inserts
etc. in their work; on time.
E. Where work is installed in close proximity to or will interfere with work of other
trades, the Contractor shall assist in working out satisfactory space arrangements.
Composite shop drawings shall be prepared, to a suitable scale, showing how the
work is installed in relation to the work of other trades.
F. Sufficiency of dimensions of plant areas, door ways etc. and suitability of slabs
and other structural members for placement, operation and maintenance of
equipment shall be verified and short comings brought to the attention of the
Engineer.
G. Conflicts in requirement with other trades shall be resolved by the Contractor.
Only those which cannot be solved without changes to structure or those which
involve major changes to system design shall be referred to the Engineer.
3.イ TRAINING OF CONTRACTOR’S PERSONNEL
A. Services of a competent representative of the piping system manufacturer shall be
provided to instruct and train the Contractor’s personnel, including the engineer-in-
charge, employed at the site for executing the work at no extra cost to the
Engineer.
B. Contractor’s personnel, who have satisfactorily completed such training, shall be
provided with a certified badge, which shall be displayed on their person at all
times on the site.
C. A list of such trained personnel shall be furnished to the Engineer prior to starting
of works at site.
D. Personnel not included in the said list and not carrying such identification of
training shall not be allowed to partake in activities related to the execution of the
works.
3.ウ SUPERVISION OF WORKS AT SITE BY PIPING SYSTEM MANUFACTURER
A. Services of a competent representative of the piping system manufacturer shall be
provided to inspect and to certify works executed at site in the following three stages:
1. First ten (10) joints
2. Midway through the works, and
3. Final testing and commissioning
B. Manufacturer’s representative shall, during each such visit, prepare reports and
furnish copies directly to the Engineer.

D. Piping shall be protected against the ingress of foreign material before the pipe is
placed in new line.
E. If pipe or appurtenance cannot be placed into the trench and in place, without
getting earth into it, each end shall be covered with a heavy, tightly woven canvas
bag of suitable size before lowering them into the trench. The bag shall be left
there until the connection is to be made to the adjacent pipe.
F. Pipes shall be laid and connected at the required depth in straight line and true to
the gradient on an even foundation as shown on the drawings, for the full length of
the barrel.
G. Piping shall be kept free of earth, dirt, and extraneous matter and clean every pipe
after installation by special cleaning tools approved by the Engineer. Mirrors,
lamps and necessary personnel shall be provided as directed, to enable the
Engineer to inspect the pipeline at any time during construction.
H. Pipe shall not be laid when, in the opinion of the Engineer, conditions are
unsuitable.
3.コ PIPING - JOINTING
A. Contractor shall submit method statements, in compliance with referenced
standards and / or recommendations of the piping system manufacturer, in respect
of pipe jointing and associated works and obtain approval of the Engineer, prior to
execution of works.
B. Welded joint shall be marked with the identification numbers of personnel
executing the joint.
C. Personnel who have executed joints that fail in tests shall be removed from site on
a permanent basis.
3.サ VALVES - SELECTION AND APPLICATION
A. Valves shall be installed with stem upright or horizontal, not inverted; except with
the written permission of the Engineer, for each location.
B. Valves shall be of the same size as pipeline, except where shown otherwise on the
Contract Drawings.
C. Valves with flanged ends shall be used in valve pits and when directly buried,
irrespective of size, unless otherwise indicated.
D. Gate / Butterfly valves shall be used for shutoff, to isolate equipment, part of
systems or risers and for drainage purposes.
E. Globe valves shall be used for throttling, bypass or manual flow control services.
F. Check valves, where used, shall be self-closing, in-line, spring-loaded type.
G. Appropriate valve gland packing, sealing and gasket materials shall be selected for
the temperature and pressure encountered.
3.シ PIPE SLEEVES / PUDDLE FLANGES
A. Sleeves / puddle flanges shall be set in position in form work and additional
reinforcement provided around sleeves.
B. Sleeves / puddle flanges shall be erected in the form work, perpendicular to the
wall face and rigidly to resist displacement during pouring of concrete.
C. Openings in form-work, around puddle flanges, shall be sealed so as to avoid
leakage (and resultant honey combing) and undesirable formation of concrete.

D. Verticality of flange faces and alignment of bolt-holes with connected equipment
(valves etc.) shall be checked and ensured after the pouring of concrete.
Adjustment shall be made, where required.
E. Sleeves shall be large enough to allow for movement of pipe due to expansion or
contraction.
3.ス PEDESTALS / THRUST BLOCKS
A. Pedestals shall be cast on undisturbed soil to the formation level; extending
beyond the supported element by a minimum of 100 mm.
B. Thrust blocks shall rest on undisturbed, compacted soil and extended to sides of
the trench.
3.セ PIPELINE STRUCTURES AND APPURTENANCES
A. Valves, automatic air release valves, washout valves etc. shall be built into
pipelines in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) chambers constructed in
accordance with details on drawings and / or Ministry of Electricity and Water
(MEW) / Ministry of Public Works (MPW) standards.
B. Where pipes with flanged ends are embedded in structures, minimum clearance
required for the insertion of fasteners and operation of tools and tackles for their
proper fixation and / or removal shall be maintained, irrespective of whether such
clearances are included in the design or not.
C. Where fittings proposed by the Contractor are larger than those in design;
chambers shall be redesigned and constructed to provide minimum clearance(s)
around fittings and flanges, by the Contractor, at no additional cost to the
Engineer.
3.ソ PROTECTION DURING CONSTRUCTION
A. Ends of piping shall be kept closed with factory manufactured plugs or blind
flanges with integral indicating flags, to prevent the entry of foreign matter, during
the progress of the work. Such plugs or flanges shall be removed on completion of
the works.
B. Tie rods, bridles and temporary thrust restraints shall be provided, where required,
to prevent joints from pulling apart under pressure. Tie rods / bridles shall be
minimum 19 mm in diameter, unless those are inserted in flanges of different size.
Clamps and bridles left in permanent construction shall be given two coats of
primer and coal tar epoxy, prior to installation.
C. Piping surface shall be protected from splashes of cement, plaster, paint and
similar construction materials.
D. Piping shall be blown out using dry compressed air, prior to testing.
3.タ SERVICE / UTILITY CONNECTIONS
A. Valves and appurtenances such as flow meters / regulators and the like shall be
included in this Section.
B. Service connections shall be terminated with flanges or other de-mountable
couplings as required / appropriate.
C. Where non-standard connections (flanges / couplings) are approved and provided
at the termination, mating flanges / couplings shall be furnished to the building
contractor, by this Section.

D. Contractor shall be responsible for building connections, which shall be done after
the tests are completed. For making this connection, the temporary testing
arrangement shall be removed and connection to building piping shall be done by
flanged connection or as detailed in drawings.
3.チ INSPECTION, TESTS AND ADJUSTMENTS
A. During the manufacture and installation and after completion of works, the system,
sections of the system or its components shall be tested in the presence of the
Engineer or the Engineer’s Representative, as directed below or elsewhere. All
testing instruments and accessories shall be procured and all costs in connection
thereof borne by the Contractor.
1. Basic materials for conformity with the specified standards
2. Supports and anchors for ability to withstand required loads
3. Piping in general for line, level and slope and water tightness
3.ツ TESTING OF PIPING
A. Piping shall be tested in sections not exceeding 200 meters. Proper drainage shall
be provided for the piping, upon completion of testing, to avoid flooding of
trenches / chambers.
B. Blind test flanges shall be provided with air release cocks for releasing the air
during filling of the piping.
C. Piping in tunnels shall be tested only after checking the proper installation of
fittings and the locking ring. All bolts shall be tightened correctly and nothing, that
may be detached when the piping is subjected to test pressure, left loose and cause
accidents.
D. Piping in trench shall not be tested before thrust blocks are constructed and partial
back filling is done at the mid-point of each pipe barrel. Only the joints shall be
left exposed to check leaks during testing.
E. Pipes shall be jointed, plugged and shall have been in position for at least 24
hours, before tests are carried out.
F. Piping shall be tested for line, gradient and water tightness. Contractor shall
furnish all labour, and necessary testing instruments such as gauges, pumps etc. as
directed by the Engineer. A minimum of two (2) identical pressure gauges shall be
installed at extremities of the piping circuit to be tested.
G. Piping shall be filled with clean fresh water, leaving all high points open to allow
for purging of air.
H. System shall be pressure tested using manual pumps in increments of 25 percent of
the test pressure. A standing period of 10 minutes shall be allowed after each
pressure increment. Pressure testing using motor driven pump shall not be
permitted.
I. System shall not be over pressurised under any circumstances. If the test pressure
is close to the maximum permissible pressure of any of the system components,
calibrated pressure relief valves shall be installed in the tested circuit.
J. Valves and control devices shall be kept in the open position, during the test. After
completion of pressure test, valves shall be closed one at a time, starting from the
pressure release end, so as to ensure tightness of the valve.

K. Piping shall be tested at 150 % of the system working pressure, limited to 1379
kPa (200 psig). Pressure shall be maintained for at least eight (8) hours. Pressure
fluctuations due to ambient temperature variations shall be recorded and allowed
for by recording the circuit temperature along with the pressure readings.
L. Joints shall be checked for leaks by swabbing with a dry tissue. Drop in pressure to the
order of 10 kPa (1.5 psig) per hour, but without any visible leaks, shall be considered
as acceptable.
M. Piping shall be tested in segments during the progress of the work. An official log book
shall be maintained for recording the tests carried out on sections of piping, including
test pressure, date of test and approval signature of the Engineer or the Engineer’s
Representative witnessing the test.
N. Provision shall be made for emptying of pipes without letting water out and
flooding the trench. Contractor shall provide temporary basins, pumps etc. as
appropriate.
3.テ BACKFILLING OF TRENCHES
A. Trenches shall be back-filled with selected material (not necessarily the excavated
material) in layers not exceeding 150 mm in thickness.
B. Both sides of the pipe shall be back filled and tamped simultaneously, until the
pipe crown is reached, to prevent lateral stresses.
C. Machines shall not be used for back filling and / or tamping until midway between
pipe crown and the finished grade.
3.ト DISINFECTION AND FLUSHING
A. Pipework, appurtenances and service connections shall be disinfected in
accordance with AWWA C 601 and as modified herein.
B. Chlorinating agent shall be injected through service connections to the section to
be chlorinated, ensuring that the entire system is being disinfected. Water supply
necessary for disinfecting the main shall be provided by the Contractor.
C. In addition to the materials specified in AWWA C 601-54, the use of calcium
hypochlorite tablets, attached by means of an approved adhesive to the soffit of the
pipes as these are being laid, will also be permitted as disinfecting agents. Amount
of adhesive shall be limited to the minimum required for holding it in position.
Tablets shall be of 5 grams in weight and shall contain not less than 70 % of
available chlorine. Adhesive shall be of a type that will not impart taste, odours or
toxicity to the water supply. Where Contractor intends to use calcium hypochlorite
tablets, method of application shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval.
D. Proper care shall be exercised in the storage of liquid chlorine, hypochlorite or
other disinfecting agents. These shall be stored in tightly closed containers,
inaccessible to unauthorised persons, in compliance with the manufacturer’s
instructions and to the approval of the Engineer.
E. Water mixed with the disinfectant, sufficient to produce at least 5 ppm (mg/L) free
chlorine after 12 hours, shall be fed slowly into the pipeline. Dosage must not
exceed 10 ppm, without the approval of the Engineer. Ensure pH of water to be
treated is between 7.4 and 7.6 by adding alkali (caustic soda or soda ash) or acid
(hydrochloric acid) prior to the addition of the disinfecting agent.
F. Disinfectant shall be maintained in the system for 12 hours.

G. Treatment shall be repeated if final disinfectant residual tests less than 5 ppm after
12 hours, at any outlet.
H. Disinfectant shall be flushed from the system until residual equal to that of
incoming water or 1.0 ppm and disposed off in an approved manner, with no
liability on the Engineer.
I. Samples shall be taken no sooner than 24 hours after flushing, from the remote
outlet of each riser and from the water entry and analysed in accordance with
AWWA C 601. Results of the analysis shall be submitted to the Engineer for
approval.
