Bolted Connections Practice Problems - Students

A lap joint between two steel plates 100mm x 8mm thick must transmit a load of 100kN using 12mm diameter grade 4.6 black bolts. A lap joint between two plates, one 100mm x 12mm thick and the other 100mm x 10mm thick, must also transmit 100kN using bearing type bolts. A single bolted double cover butt joint using 5 M20 grade 4.6 bolts must connect 16mm thick boiler plates to transfer 400kN.

1.

Design a Lap joint between plates 100mm x8mm so as

to transmit a factored load of 100 kN using black bolts
of 12mm diameter and grade 4.6. The plates are made
of steel of grade Fe 410. (Ans: 7 bolts, p = 30 mm, e =
20 mm)

2.
3. Design a lap joint to connect two plates each of width
100 mm, if the thickness of one plate is 12 mm and the
other is 10 mm. The joint has to transfer a working load
of 100 kN. The plates are of Fe 410 grade. Use bearing
type of bolts and draw connection details. (Ans: 6 bolts)
4. Design a single bolted double cover butt joint to
connect boiler plates of thickness 16 mm for maximum
efficiency. Use M 20 bolts of grade 4.6. Boiler plates are
of Fe 410 grade. The joint has to transfer a working
load of 400 kN . Draw the connection details. (Ans: 5
bolts)
