Difference Between Analog and Digital Signals

Analog and digital signals are used to transmit information through electric signals. The difference is that analog signals represent information as varying amplitudes of electric pulses, while digital signals represent information in binary format (zeros and ones) with each bit having one of two distinct amplitudes. An analog signal is continuous while a digital signal uses discrete values. Analog signals represent physical measurements as sine waves and are subject to noise deterioration, while digital signals represent information as square waves in a noise-immune format stored as binary bits.

Difference between Analog and Digital Signals

Analog and1digital signals are used1to transmit information1, usually

through1electric signals. In both these1technologies1, the information,
such as any1audio or1video, is transformed into electric1signals. The
difference1between analog1and digital technologies1is that in1analog
technology1, information is1translated into electric pulses1of varying
amplitude. In1digital technology, translation1of information is into binary
format1 (zero or1one) where each1bit is representative1of two distinct
amplitudes1.

Definitions1of Analog vs1. Digital signals

An Analog1signal is any continuous1signal for which the time1varying
feature (1variable1) of the signal1is a representation1of some other time
varying 1quantity, i.e., analogous to1another time1varying signal. It
differs from a digital1signal in terms of small1fluctuations in the signal
which are1meaningful.

A digital1signal uses discrete (1discontinuous ) values. By contrast,

non-digital1 ( or analog ) systems1use a1continuous range of values to
represent information. Although digital1representations are discrete, the
information represented can be either1discrete, such as numbers or
letters1, or continuous, such as1sounds1, images1, and other
measurements of continuous1systems.
