10.1 Introduction to Orthographic Projection Drawing (from the model).

You will now produce an orthographic (3rd angle) projection drawing of the
STARTPART.prt model. You will add dimensions and a section as needed for a fully
detailed drawing. See below.

Fig. 10.1

10.2 Pre-requisites.

You must have successfully completed:

Pro/ENGINEER: 4 The starter part.

10.3 Modifying the STARTPART.prt model.

Before we start the drawing we need to modify the 3-D model STARTPART.prt to define
a plane on which we will take the drawing Section AA.

! Note: For a simple component such as the STARTPART.prt a section

is not required. It is included here to demonstrate the method.
Make the project_1 directory your Working Directory.

Open the STARTPART.prt file.

An easy method to define a plane is to use an additional Datum plane:

Insert an offset datum plane

by clicking the side toolbar button:

Pro/ENGINEER: 10 Orthographic drawing. Page 2 of 18

Or from the pull-down menu:

Insert > Datum > Plane...

From the Menu Manager select Offset:

Select FRONT
to offset from.

Fig.10.2

Select the FRONT datum plane to Offset from, as shown above in Fig 10.2.

" Tip: If you have difficulty selecting the correct plane use Quit Sel,
refer to Section 5.6.2 –using Query Select.
Click on Enter Value under OFFSET in the Menu Manager.

Enter 200 as shown above, to give a datum plane, DTM1, at half the length of the
STARPART.prt model, Fig. 10.2.

In the Menu Manager click Done.

Observe the new datum plane.

Pro/ENGINEER: 10 Orthographic drawing. Page 3 of 18

10.4 Creating a Drawing Sheet.

There are two methods to start a drawing. If you have completed the operation above
and STARTPART.prt is active:

Create a new object form the toolbar button

or from the pull-down menu: File > New...

In the New window select:

Drawing, as the file type

and name the drawing STARTPART

Untick the Use default template box.

Click OK.

! Note: You can use any name for the drawing. The model that the
drawing associates with is not defined by the drawing file name
but by the active part or assembly.
In the resulting New Drawing window:

The Default Model will be the active part.

If you have no active part (i.e. just logged in)

you should follow the above but in the
New Drawing window under Default Model
select Browse... This opens your directory
and you can select the Part/Assembly you
wish to draw. Once selected click on Open
to commit and continue.

Make the Standard size A3.

This sets an A3 size drawing which is OK for

STARTPART.prt with a suitable scale

Click on OK to create the empty A3 sheet.

Click in the display as shown below.

Select a location to place

the General View.

A general view is shown and you can

now change the orientation to obtain the
first orthogonal view.

In the Orientation window Reference 1 is requesting the Front. This requires a plane
or surface that you define as the front of the component, as you wish to view it in the
drawing. Select the surface as shown below.

" Tip: Use Query Select to give you more control over your selecting!

10.5.2 The Projection views.

You can now proceed to add two views that are

projections of this view.

! Note: The default projection type is Click

3rd angle, as you will see when
you place the projected views.
From the Menu Manager check these selections
and click on Done.

Add the first projected view as indicated below.

Your drawing should look like
the display to the right here.

Observe how the first view has

used the hidden lines, as you
would expect with 3rd angle
projection.

Hidden lines are shown as grey

in the display but print out as
dotted lines.

10.5.3 An auxiliary general view.

You will add another General view in order to demonstrate the method.

Add a General View from as in section 10.5.1, and place it in the empty top right
quadrant of the drawing.

Click OK in the Orientation window to accept the defaulted orientation. Do not worry if
the view is too large for the drawing at this stage.

! IMPORTANT NOTE :
When indicating the position of a projected view it is sometimes
possible to indicate a point that allows a projection from two
existing views. In this case Pro/E prompts that you have
CONFLICTING VIEWS and prompts for the view from which you
wish to project. Select this view.
We now need to carry out various procedures to obtain a good layout of views.

10.6 To remove Datum Planes, Curves and Axes.

Select all of these buttons to off:
