Addnsubtrn PDF

The document provides examples and exercises for addition and subtraction of whole numbers. It includes steps like counting up from the smaller to larger number, separating numbers into place values, adding or subtracting the nearest multiple of 10/100/1000 and then adjusting, using relationships between addition and subtraction, writing addition and subtraction statements relating given numbers, and solving equations by finding the missing number.

Addition and Subtraction

Complete the following sums by counting UP from the SMALLER to the LARGER

number:

eg. 403 - 386 = 4 + 10 + 3 = 17 or 8000 - 2785 = 5 + 10 + 200 + 5000 = 5215

1) 784 - 678 = 6) 5062 - 3896 =

2) 273 - 185 = 7) 4338 - 1253 =

3) 705 - 287 = 8) 7684 - 2369 =

4) 4000 - 3993 = 9) 2534 - 968 =

5) 8006 - 2993 = 10) 6572 - 572 =

For the next section, separate the numbers into hundreds, tens and units:

eg. 24 + 58 = 82 because it is 20 + 50 = 70 and 4 + 8 = 12

making it 70 + 12 = 82

11) 98 + 43 = 14) 89 - 53 =

12) 324 + 58 = 15) 428 - 43 =

13) 439 +49 = 16) 695 - 44 =

For the next section, add or subtract the nearest multiple of 10, 100 or 1000 and

then adjust your answer:

eg. 63 + 29 = 92 eg. 8012 - 2002 = 6010

because it is the same as 63 + 30 - 1 because it is 8012 - 2000 - 2

17) 58 + 71 = 21) 74 + 58 =

18) 46 + 69 = 22) 128 - 67 =

19) 84 - 19 = 23) 274 + 96 =

20) 283 - 71 = 24) 4005 - 1997 =

The next section uses the relationship between addition and subtraction.

When you know that 136 + 319 = 455, this makes it possible to find 455 - 318

or 455 - 137

Work out the following sums and then state three other related facts, as in the

example on the previous page:

25) 58 + 27 =

26) 91 - 25 =

27) 101 - 25 =

28) 15.8 + 9.7 =

Given the numbers 135, 228 and 363, you can write four different sentences relating

these numbers: 228 + 135 = 363

135 + 228 = 363

363 -228 = 135

363 - 135 = 228

29) Use the numbers 125, 237, 352, 77, 202, 477. Write as many addition or

subtraction statements as you can.

30) 7 + 12 + 9 = 33) 80 + 70 + 40 =

31) 4 + 7 + 9 + 1 = 34) 40 + 70 + 90 + 60 =

32) 3 + 5 + 7 + 2 + 9 = 35) 50 + 60 +30 +20 +10 =

Complete the following sums by replacing x with the correct number.

It is easier if you: • look for pairs that make 10 and do these first

or • start with the LARGEST number

36) 1 + x + 6 + 9 + 7 = 37 37) 40 + 90 + 60 = x

38) 27 + 36 + 13 = x 39) 31 + x + 29 = 87

40) 36 + 19 + 24 = x
