Practice Problems

Wherever required, use the relevant motor data given below (at the end).

(Q1) Consider a squirrel cage induction motor with negligible stator winding resistance. Find the
following (using the data given below):-

Find the following at rated supply condition:- (i)Motor torque at starting and at rated speed (ii) Max.
motoring torque and corresponding slip (iii) Maximum regenerative braking torque and corresponding
slip.

Answer: Tstart = 122.3 NM (In the torque expression, put Vphase = 400 V (Delta
connected), s= 1.0, ωs = 157 rad / sec.

Trated = Put s = 0.067 and other values same as above. = 40.24 NM.

Tmax (motoring) = Tmax (generating) as stator resistance is negligible = 152.87 NM.

smaxT = 0.5 for motoring, -0.5 for regenerative braking.

Now the squirrel cage motor is controlled from a variable frequency, variable voltage ac source such
that ‘V/f’ ratio is maintained equal to rated value for frequencies below rated frequency and ‘V’ is
maintained constant at rated value for frequency above rated frequency. Under this situation find:-
applied voltage and motor torque (in terms of % rated torque) when motor runs with 40 and 60 Hz
supplies at 1100 and 1700 rpms respectively.

Answer: At 1100 rpm and 40 Hz, slip speed = 100 rpm which turns out to be rated slip-
speed at 50 Hz supply. Since at 40 Hz rated flux is also maintained the torque at 1100 rpm and
40 Hz = Trated.

At 1700 rpm and 60 Hz, slip speed is again 100 rpm which turns out to be rated slip-speed.
However since only rated voltage is applied, flux reduces by a factor (50/70) and torque
reduces by (50/70)2. Thus, torque = 51% of Trated.

(Q2) Consider the slip ring induction motor with data as given below. Under rated supply voltage what
external resistance / phase should be connected to get peak torque at 400 rpm ?

Answer: To get Tmax at starting, smaxT = 1.0, hence (Rr’+Rexternal’) = SQRT(Rs2+ ( XS +

Xr’)2)=6.31 ohm

Find Rexternal’ (per phase, referred to stator) = 6.31-1.9 = 4.41 ohm. Divide by square of (stator
to rotor turns ratio) to get actual value of Rexternal = 1.1 ohm per phase.

With the above calculated external resistance in rotor circuit, calculate the following:-

(i) Find the magnitude of starting torque and motor input current.
Practice Problems

Answer: Tstart = Tmax = 62 NM. Put values in formula to get torque and current (=22.7 A).
Note that motor is star connected. 3 Vphase2 = 4002 (star connected), s= 1.0, ωs = 157 rad / sec.

(ii) Steady state speed when loaded with constant torque of 25 N-m.
Answer: Use torque formula and find slip. T = 2 Tmax / (s/smaxT + smaxT /s)
Put values of T= 25 NM, Tmax = 62 NM and smaxT = 1.0.
(iii) Losses in stator and rotor circuit under load torque of 25 N-m. (Find as taught in class)
(iv) Time required and energy dissipated in bringing the motor speed from standstill to 1000
rpm at no-load. (similar problem solved in class, find slip value corresponding to
1000 rpm)

Now, considering external resistance /phase to be zero , calculate the following:-

(v) Time required and energy dissipated in bringing the motor speed from standstill to 1000
rpm at no-load. (similar problem solved in class)
(vi) Time required and energy dissipated when motor, steadily running at no load, is stopped by
plugging (at rated voltage). (similar problem solved in class)
(vii) Time required and energy dissipated when motor, steadily running at no load, is stopped by
DC dynamic braking (under rated air-gap flux magnitude). (torque expression under dc
dynamic braking is same as under regenerative braking provided torque-slip curve
is shifted left by synchronous speed. Think about it!)

Data for squirrel cage induction motor:- 400 V, 50 Hz, 4 pole, 1400 rpm, delta connected with following
parameters ref. to stator:- RS = negligible, Rr’ = 5 Ω, XS = Xr’ = 5 Ω, (subscript ‘s’ for stator, ‘r ‘ for rotor).

Data for slip-ring induction motor:- 3-phase, 50 Hz, 400 V, 4 pole, Y-connected slip-ring motor has
following parameters referred to stator: RS = 1.9 Ω, Rr’ = 4.575 Ω, XS = Xr’ = 3.01 Ω , stator to rotor turns
ratio = 2, moment of inertia = 0.1 kg-m2. (subscript ‘s’ for stator, ‘r ‘ for rotor).
