Vector Spaces Assg.

This document provides 4 problems related to linear algebra concepts of vector spaces and subspaces. Problem 1 asks students to prove that the set of m×n matrices and the set of functions from a set to a field are vector spaces. Problem 2 asks students to identify which of several subsets are subspaces of various vector spaces like R2, matrices over R, and functions from C to C.

1 Vector spaces
Problem 1.1. Let F be a field and let Mm×n (F) denote the set of all m × n matrices with entries are
from the field F. Define vector addition and and scalar multiplication on Mm×n (F) over F as follows:
For A, B ∈ Mm×n (F) and α ∈ F, (A + B)ij = Aij + Bij and (αA)ij = αAij for 1 ≤ i ≤ m
and 1 ≤ j ≤ n. Prove that Mm×n (F) is a vector space over the field F with respect to the operations
defined as above.

Problem 1.2. Let S be any nonempty set and F be any field, and let F(S, F) denote the set of all
functions from S to F. Define vector addition and scalar multiplication on F(S, F) over F as follows:
For f, g ∈ F(S, F) and α ∈ F, (f + g)(s) = f (s) + g(s) and (cf )(s) = cf (s) for each s ∈ S.
Prove that F(S, F) is a vector space over the field F with respect to the operations defined as above.

Problem 1.3. Let F be a field and P(F) denote the set of polynomials with coefficients from the field
F. With respect to the usual addition of polynomials and scaler multiplication, prove that P(F) is
vector space over F.

Problem 1.4. Let V denote the set of ordered pairs of real numbers. If (a1 , a2 ) and (b1 , b2 ) are
elements of V and c ∈ R, define

(a1 , a2 ) + (b1 , b2 ) = (a1 + b1 , a2 b2 ) and c(a1 , a2 ) = (ca1 , ca2 ).

Is V a vector space over R with these operations?

2 Subspaces
Problem 2.1. Consider the vector space R2 over the field R. Which of the following subsets are
subspaces of R2 ?

1. {(x1 , x2 ) ∈ R2 : x1 + x2 = 0},

2. {(x1 , x2 ) ∈ R2 : x1 + x2 = −1},
