Precast Pile Analysis & Design.400

The document discusses the design and analysis of precast driven piles used for a service road project near a railway overbridge. It includes checks for: [1] Driving stress on the concrete during installation, [2] Lifting and pitching stresses during transportation, [3] Axial stress capacity, and [4] Uplift capacity. The analyses show that the pile section meets the strength requirements for these loads based on relevant codes.

DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF PRECAST DRIVEN PILE (400mm X 400mm SQ)
PROJECT TITLE: SERVICE ROAD BESIDE JURAIN RAILWAY OVERBRIDGE.

1.0 CHECK FOR DRIVING STRESS

Formula for use with Diesel Hammer:

Ru= [12efEn/ (s+0.5(C1+C2+C3)] x [(Wr+e Wp) / (Wr+Wp)] ---------(I)
Where,
 Ru = ultimate carrying capacity of pile  s = set value
(considered as ultimate resistance to  C1= temporary compression allowance
driving) for pile head and cap.
 Wr= weight of falling mass, lb  C2= temporary compression of pile, inch.
 En=Rated energy per blow, ft-lb = Ru L/ AE
 ef= hammer efficiency =100 percent for  C3= temporary compression allowance
diesel hammer. for quake of ground
 Wp= weight of pile  A= average cross section of pile, Sq.inch
 L = length of pile, inch.  E= modulus of elasticity for pile
 e = coefficient of restitution material=57000√ f’c
Using the above equation,
Developed Stress on Concrete during driving = = 20.61 Mpa < 40 Mpa
[FOR DETAIL CALCULATION: APPENDIX-A]
Hence Safe for Concrete Compressive Strength at Driving.

2.0 CHECK FOR LIFTING & PITCHING STRESS

Total dead weight of pile, W ' =[0.40x0.40x25x18] kN= 72 kN

Factored Dead Weight of Pile, W =1.4 x 72 = 100.80 kN [ACI-318-14: TABLE 5.3.1]
 2.0.1. LIFTING & PITCHING
For two point lifting and pitching at L/10, maximum developed moment = WL/40 …(II)*
=100.80 X 18/40 = 45.36 kN-m

[*Ref.: Pile Design & Construction Practices by M. Tomlinson & J. Woodward] [5th
Edition/Page No.: 376]
Maximum Developed Moment, Mu=45.36 kN-m
2.0.1.1 MOMENT CAPACITY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SECTION
So Moment Capacity of the section, Mc = 81.21 kN-m
[REF.: APPENDIX-B –ANALYSIS ON SECTION CAPACITY.]

HENCE SAFE FOR TWO-POINT LIFTING (AT 0.2 L).

3.0 CHECK FOR AXIAL STRESS

According to ACI-318-14-10.3.6 & ACI-318-14-22.4.2,
Axial Capacity of Pile with Lateral Ties:

φPn = 0.80 φ [0.85 fC’(Ag-Ast) + fyAst]

φPn = 0.80 X 0.65 X [0.85 X30 X (160000-1608.50) +500 X 1608.50)]
= 2518.48 kN = 251.84 TON

4.0 CHECK FOR UPLIFT CAPACITY

According to ACI 543-R-4.3.3.1, the uplift capacity of the section can be determined from the
following equation,

Pup =0.5 x fy x Ast

Pup =0.5 x 500 x 1608.50 =402125 N =40.213 kN. =40.213Ton
