Business organizations are often established on a set of principles that define the

models, which in turn highlight the patterns, designs and the general business strategies.

Ideally, a business model defines the nature of business activities, and therefore, a great

business model enhances business activities by ensuring sustainable growth in revenues and

profitability. Thus, a business model outlines the business patterns, designs, and strategies

that are necessary to enhance various business activities. In the context of City of Barnwell

Parks & Recreation Department, the organization employs a multi-sided business model

pattern. The pattern enables the department to create value by enhancing close interactions

between the value propositions and the customer propositions for effective service delivery to

its customers, (Wlu.ca, n.d.). Notably, the organization’s revenues are pegged on the

existence of effective value propositions that allow the business to attract different consumer

segments. Also, the department is based on a functional, structural design. According to Lilly

(2005), the functional design categories related specialties into the same groups, and it is

highly effective in organizations that allow departmentalization. The functional design

applies in the department's context because related specialties are grouped into similar

categories. For instance, the customer segment category comprises of the visitors, city

residents, sports tourists, and county residents. Also, the organization applies the growth

business strategy as the overall strategy. According to Suttle (n.d.), growth business strategy

allows a business to introduce new features into its existing goods and services so as to

increase variety for its customers. Similarly, in the City of Barnwell Parks & Recreation

business model, the department focuses on creating value by providing unique recreational

services and park experiences while ensuring proper maintenance of the parks to enhance the

satisfaction of the customer segments.

Business leaders and strategists often apply different framing applications in their

organizations to streamline their activities. In the article "Reframing Organizations," Bolman

and Deal (n.d.) claim that business models should be developed in a way that allows an open

approach to leadership. Framing applications play an important role in providing alternative

solutions to risks that occur in the process of doing business. In practice, the City of Barnwell

Parks and Recreation Department has employed the structural frame as is clearly depicted

from its business model. The frame focuses on setting measurable targets, outlining the duties

and responsibilities, and as well, it reveals the systems and procedures for use in conducting

business activities. In this case, it defines the key partners that are responsible for

accomplishing the department's main activities in order to enhance the value proposition for

the benefit of the customer segments. The structural frame brings out an effective model in

the sense that different individual specialties are grouped into categories that are in turn

interlinked to enhance the effectiveness of the business model.

In addition to the framing application, the department applies ‘transformative

organizations’ as the primary metaphorical application throughout its business model. The

City of Barnwell Parks & Recreation Department organization is constantly changing based

on the programs that are offered, the customer segments, revenue streams and key partners.

The organization has to understand why and how it needs to change in order to maintain the

organization. Managers of the Parks & Recreation Department have to identify the changes in

the key resources such as number and type of volunteers and budget increases or decreases in

order effectively manage the organization. Ideally, the metaphor provides a simplistic

approach towards implementing the organization’s model, and therefore, it is effective in

enhancing the flow of activities within the organization. As well, in a structured model

design, the metaphorical application will enhance interactivity between different specialties

and categories so as to increase value proposition and ensure satisfaction within different

customer segments.
