Deber 3

This document contains 7 problems related to mechanics of materials and plane stress transformations. Problem 1 asks to deduce plane stress transformation equations using stress tensors. Problem 2 asks to demonstrate that the sum of normal stresses on parallel faces remains the same after rotating the reference frame. Problem 3 asks to use the plane stress transformations to determine stresses in a new reference frame. Problem 4 asks to determine the axial load on a bar given the plane stress state at a point. Problems 5-7 involve using Mohr's circle to analyze states of plane stress and determine principal stresses and maximum shear stresses.

Deber 3
Fecha de entrega: 16-Nov-2017

1. Deduzca las ecuaciones de transformación para el esfuerzo plano usando el tensor de

esfuerzos (t(n) = [σ]n). El estado plano de esfuerzos y las ecuaciones de transformación se
indican a seguir:

3. On a thin bracket, the state of plane stress referred to the

x’y’ axes has been found to be σx’x’, σy’y’ and σx’y’, as shown
on the figure. Use the plane-stress transformation equations
(problem 1) to determine the stresses σxx, σyy and σxy, the
stresses referred to the xy axes. Show these stresses on a
properly oriented stress element.

4. The state of plane stress at point A on the surface of an axially loaded bar is shown in the
figure below. Determine the axial load P if the cross-sectional dimensions of the bar are as
indicated.

5. An element in plane stress is subjected to stresses σxx = 50
MPa (compressive) and σxy = 42 MPa (see figure). It is
known that one of the principal stresses equals 33 MPa in
tension.
a. Determine the stress σyy.
b. Determine the other principal stress and the orientation
of the principal planes, then show the principal stresses
on a sketch of a properly oriented element.

6. At a certain point on the surface of a machine part, the

normal stresses on two mutually perpendicular faces (the x
and y faces) are 7 MPa (compressive) and 3 MPa (tensile),
as shown in the figure. The maximum in-plane shear stress
at this point is σxy,max = 10 MPa. Use Mohr’s circle to
determine graphically:
a. The magnitude σxy of the shear stress that acts in the
σxy
direction shown on the x and y faces,
b. The in-plane principal stresses at this point.

7. For the given stress states:

a. Sketch Mohr’s circles for three-dimensional stresses.
b. Determine the absolute maximum shear stress.
