INTRODUCTION
The Auto Duct Program is a powerful design and Automated drawing tool. The Auto Duct works
entirely in Autocad Environment. The program design is done to fit the way you work. Draw only
single lines representing route of the duct and place air outlets on the single lines and the program
automatically does the following with mouse click on respective Tool Bar Buttons.
• Calculates the discharge in each duct run out / trunk
• Decides on the fitting requirement
• Performs duct sizing calculations
• Creates Duct layout drawings in 2D & 3D
• Draw Sectional elevations
• Acoustic and Thermal Insulation Hatching
The duct sizes can be computed for round or rectangular ducts and for GSS or Aluminium sheets.
There is no limitation on number of trunks and run outs. Air outlets can be selected automatically
from the manufacturer’s database. If space is a problem, height, width, and diameter constraints on
duct sections can be specified. Temperature raise calculations for terminal insulation can be carried
out. Insulation markings can be automatic with the above calculation or based on manual selection of
trunks.
Reports for
• Duct Area

• Thermal and Acoustic Insulation area

• Pressure drop Calculations
• Air Outlets
are made from the duct layout drawn and presented in a fully formatted Excel File. Auto Duct uses
standard friction loss coefficients for several common fitting types as listed in Hand Books.

OVERVIEW
The Auto Duct works entirely in Autocad environment. As soon as the Program is started Autocad is
simultaneously loaded, if not already running and Auto Duct windows always run on top of Autocad
window. When ever user input is needed from Autocad, Auto Duct window is automatically
minimized facilitating easy data entry. The Auto Duct window can also be minimized manually if you
want to work in AutoCAD independently.

Project files are Access data base files which are listed in a tree format similar to Explorer. When duct
designing is being attempted for the first time for a particular job, a project file should always be
created. The drawings and AHUs associated with each project are kept in this data file. This file keeps
track of drawing files and AHUs created in each drawing and will be readily accessible to you without
searching through various directories.

AUTO DUCT USER MANUAL
For example you may have a project named “MG
Hospitals” and there are say 6 floors in the building and 6
autocad drawings may be present for each floor and in
each floor there may be one or more AHUs. The name of
drawing files and AHUs will be stored in the project file. It
is not possible to use the Auto Duct unless a project file is
created or opened. There is no bar if all drawings and
AHUs are added to a single project file. The Project

OVERVIEW
As already stated in Project Files option, the list of
drawings in the project and the list of AHUs created in
each drawing will be listed in a tree format similar to
explorer screen when you open the project. The drawings
associated with the selected project are added or deleted in
this form. To illustrate, the selected project may contain
three floors of the Building to be air conditioned and these
three floor drawings are saved in drawing files “first
floor.dwg” , “second floor.dwg”, “third floor.dwg” etc.
These three drawings have to be added to the project file
using the add drawing option. Once the drawing is added
to the project they will be presented with full path name
without any necessity for searching through the whole hard
disc. Each AHU in the drawing is added to or deleted from
the drawing in this option. For instance, in first floor
drawing named “first floor.dwg” of a building, there could
be more than one air conditioned area like, ICCU, Post
Operative Ward and Operation Theaters etc., Each area
will have an independent AHU and the duct design has to
be carried out individually. It is necessary to add the name
of the three AHUs to the drawing.
There is no restriction on naming the AHU and it can be
fully representative of the AHU except that an
"underscore" (_) at beginning of the name should not be
used. For ICCU AHU can be named as “Intensive Care
Unit”.
The AHU Module menu provides the following options.
• New Drawing
• New AHU
• Open
• Delete
• Exit
• Settings-Design
• Settings-Layer

UTILITIES
The utility menu option provides for the following options
• Copy Excel File
• Prepare for Potting
COPY EXCEL FILE
Autocad already provides for pasting an excel file in a drawing as an embedded object. When an
excel file is embedded in Autocad, it is necessary to scale the inserted excel file and also change color
settings of excel file to match Autocad color settings. Doing the same manually requires time and is
cumbersome. Auto Duct provides for an easy option for data present in excel file formats to be
copied in to Autocad as Autocad entities.
To copy excel file, first open the drawing and then Open the Excel file you want to copy and select
the sheet to be pasted in Autocad. Minimise Excel. Point to Utility and click on Copy Excel File.
Enter text height in Text Height Dialogue box. Autocad will get focus and Select Point Acad
command will be activated. Select the point where you want to insert the Excel file and the data in the
excel file will be copied to the Drawing with excel format conditions. Only text objects in excel will be
copied. If excel file is not open or the text height entered is zero then an error message will appear
indicating the same and no file will be copied.
PREPARE FOR PLOTTING
Number of layers are created by Auto Duct to facilitate design and drawing the duct. The drawing
objects in these layers are not required to be plotted. Point to Utilities and click on Prepare for Potting
menu option to hide these objects in these layers.

OVERVIEW
The Single Lines form is the main user interface where
most of the options of duct drawing are carried out.
Single lines are lines drawn in the drawing representing
duct routing. For generation of duct layout the user
has to draw the single lines for various duct branches
and connect the air outlets to different branches by
single lines. On completing the same the user can
create, simply by clicking various menu options:
• 2D Duct Layout
• 3D Duct Layout
• Section
• Duct Sheet BOQ
• Terminal Thermal Insulation Hatch & BOQ
• Acoustic Insulation Hatch & BOQ
• Pressure Drop Calculation
The strength of Auto Duct lies in the fact that there is
absolutely no restriction on how the routing lines are
drawn. The line length can be more than the branch
length. The lines need not originate from another
single line. Only restriction imposed is that all routing
lines and air outlets should be connected and the first
line Single Line from the AHU mouth should be
drawn in the direction of air flow. Incase any lines or
air outlet are not connected, the same will ignored and
duct layout shall be drawn for connected lines and air
outlets only. Users have complete freedom to draw the
single lines by using Autocad line commands, with the
simple restriction that the lines should be drawn in
layer created by Auto Duct for Single Lines.
Though the user can entirely use Autocad commands to create and modify single lines the following
options are provided by Auto Duct to draw and modify single lines. As user gets more conversant
with Auto Duct, the user will find that drawing single lines through these options is as easy and
versatile as Autocad commands because these option essentially call only autocad commands. Some of
the commands such as move is more efficient because the Auto Duct shall not only move the selected
single line but also move the branches connected to it.

DOUBLE LINES

OVERVIEW
The generate double line option module carries out almost most
of the calculations associated in generating the drawing as well as
BOQ and Pressure drop calculations. Unless generation of
double line is done, other options of BOQ, thermal insulation,
acoustic insulation, pressure drop etc can not be carried out.
Similarly, after generating double lines once, any subsequent
changes made in single lines and air outlets will not be reflected
unless double line is generated again.

START GENERATION OF DOUBLE LINES

Point to Generate and click on Double Lines to
generate double lines.
If double lines are already generated, confirm
double line generation again Dialog box will
appear. Click Yes command button to confirm
double lines generation again or No command
button to abort double lines generation.
When double lines are again generated, all drawing objects including Section, Three-D and Texts
created by the Auto Duct during the earlier Double Lines Generation will be deleted. Enter Acoustic
insulation data before generating double lines.
Auto Duct gives you option for checking
errors before generating double lines. If you
confirm error checking in the in Check for
Error Dialogue box Auto Duct will check for
errors in connection and report the same if
any error is found. If no error is found then
Auto Duct will proceed with Double Line
Generation.
Do not work in AutoCAD while double line generation is in progress. If you do so results may be
wrong some times depending on the operation carried out. A self closing dialogue box will appear
when double line generation is started. If you do not want this warning message check the Do not
show this Cheque box.

DEFAULT SETTING
On confirming double line generation,
Initial Setting Screen will appear. The
initial setting data to be entered are self
explanatory. The data can be entered in
MKS or FPS system. Depending on units
of the drawing, relevant data will be taken
into account by the Auto Duct. Enter
details of initial settings and click Okay
Command Button to proceed with
Double line generation.

DOUBLE LINE GENERATION

The Autocad screen will get focus and wait for picking up starting single line. Ensure that the first
single line is drawn in the direction of flow. No branches should be drawn at starting point. On
selecting a valid single line, the Auto Duct shall first carry out the following error checking.
• Insertion point of all air outlets fall on single line. If any air outlet is not connected the same
will be ignored.
• No two single lines overlap each other.
• Rearranging starting point of single lines so that the single line is in the direction of flow.
• Ignore extra length of single lines beyond air out / branch locations.
The Auto Duct gives complete freedom for the user to draw the single lines in any manner. There is
no restrictions such as starting point of branch single lines should fall on main branch or that each
branch should be a separate single line etc. Only restriction is that all air outlets and single lines
should be connected. In case starting point / end points of two single lines being same and there is
no branch at this point, the two single lines will be taken as two duct pieces and drawn accordingly.
After carrying out error checking, if any error is found, error message will appear indicating type of
error and double lines will not be generated. Correct the single lines for the error and generate double
lines again.
When no error is found, the Auto Duct will process the single lines for
• Finding route
• Finding CFM in branches

AUTO DUCT USER MANUAL
• Calculating Duct Sizes
• Drawing double lines.
• Writing Duct Sizes etc
While processing data and generating double lines, you will be getting messages regarding process
being carried out. Do not work in Autocad while processing is in progress. The Auto Duct works in
Autocad environment and calls many of the Autocad commands directly during its processing. If
Autocad commands are in process independently during this time, it may not be possible for
commands to be called in by Auto Duct. When there is such a clash in processing, Windows
operating System message of "Switch to Process" will appear. For example, if you have used the
zoom command and have not exited the Zoom command, the commands issued by Auto Duct
cannot be carried out. When such message appears, complete the pending Autocad command and
select switch to Autocad in the Windows Dialog box.
While drawing double lines, a number of data files will be created, and saved automatically in the
drawing directory for each AHU. The data pertaining to double lines, air outlets drawn are stored in
these files. The data in these files is used for subsequent operations such as generating BOQ, Thermal
Insulation, Pressure Drop, Acoustic Insulation, Section, Three-D etc. These files therefore should not
be modified or deleted. After generating Double lines, if any modification is done for the double lines
/ air outlets, directly in Autocad and if you try to use other generate options such as BOQ, Section,
Three-D etc, which uses the above data files, the result of such operations may not be satisfactory.
BOQ
Point to Generate and click BOQ to generate Duct Area Details. When BOQ option is clicked, Auto
Duct will carry out area details of various duct components such as Straight Pieces, Bends, Reducer,
Collars etc and copy the result of the calculations to a new Excel file. The data for each component
will be copied to a separate worksheet with the summary details in the first sheet. Auto formatting of
the data in Excel, including borders etc will be carried out by Auto Duct, so that excel file is ready for
printing. The user can save the new excel file for future use if necessary. The file can be copied to the
Drawing if necessary using Copy Excel File Option.
SECTION
Point to Generate and click Section to generate Sectional views
of Ducting. Enter Ceiling Height and False Ceiling Height either
in mm or inches. Depending on drawing units relevant unit will
be taken into account. Enter name of the section and height of
Section marker Text. The unit for text height has to be in
drawing units. After entering the above data, click on the type of
section command button you want to draw. When any of the
section command button is clicked, Autocad window shall get
focus and wait for selecting double lines and air outlets. After
selecting entities to be included in section, select the top left
corner of the section drawing location. The section drawing
consists of 3D objects. Use Hide command to hide hidden lines.
While taking plot of section drawing, check hide hidden lines
