Assignment Concept of Stress
Assignment Concept of Stress
1. Briefly explain the concept of stress and strain at a point on a deformable body. (if possible
with the aid of simple sketch).
2. The three steel wires are used to support the load. If the wires have an allowable tensile
stress of 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 165 𝑀𝑃𝑎, and wire AB has a diameter of 6 mm, BC has a diameter of 5
mm, and BD has a diameter of 7 mm, determine the greatest force P that can be applied
before one of the wires fails.

3. A 90 mm wide bar will be used to carry an axial tension load of 280 kN. The normal and
shear stresses on plane AB must be limited to 150 MPa and 100 MPa respectively.
Determine the minimum thickness t required for the bar.

1. State the equation for factor of safety based on normal stress and discuss the importance of
having factor of safety in structural design.
2. The stepped aluminium rod, shown in Figure 1-B, has a circular cross section and
is fixed to a wall. The rod is subjected to axial loads as shown. Given d1 = 80 mm, d2
= 60 mm and d3 = 50 mm
i) Determine the internal axial force in segment (2) of the compound axial assembly.
ii) Determine the segment, which maximum stress occurs (i.e. (1) or (2) or
(3))

3. Link AC is made of steel with a 400 MPa ultimate normal strength and has a 6 X 12 mm
uniform rectangular cross section. It is connected to a pin support at A and to member BCD
at C by 9 mm diameter pin each, while member BCD is connected to its support at B by a 7.5
mm diameter pin. All of the pins are made of steel with 175 MPa ultimate shear strength
and are in single shear. Knowing that the factor of safety of 3.25 is desired:
(a) Determine the maximum load P that may be applied at point D
(b) Knowing that the maximum bearing strength is 275 MPa, would the pin at A or C fail?

6. In Figure 2-C, each of the steel links AB and CD is connected to a pin support and to member
BCE by 12 mm diameter steel pins acting in single shear. For the steel material, the ultimate
shearing stress is 165 MPa and the ultimate tensile stress is 400 MPa. Determine the
allowable load P if an overall factor of safety of 3.2 is applied.
