Leonardo da Vinci drew a model of a helicopter in 1483. Several inventors attempted manned helicopter flights in the following centuries, including Sir George Cayley in 1843 and Paul Cornu in 1907. The first successful helicopter was created by Focke-Achgelis in 1936. Igor Sikorsky then built the first practical helicopter for the United States, the VS-300, in 1939. Over 50 years later, in 1997, the first production model of the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft conducted its maiden flight.
