    HIGHLY IMMERSIVE PROGRAMME (HIP) ACTIVITY

    ACTIVITY Scrapbook
    TYPE OF In-Class
    ACTIVITY
    LANGUAGE SKILL Speaking, Reading, Writing
    AIMS 1. To encourage students to learn the English language through language
    based projects.
    2. To develop a fun learning atmosphere for English language.
    3. To encourage whole school participation.
    4. To encourage creativity and innovation.
    5. To employ collaborative and cooperative learning strategies.
    6. To reinforce the usage of ICT in classroom learning.
    TIME One month
    DESCRIPTION This project-based learning activity involves both upper and lower
    secondary school students. Students are to complete the assigned project
    creatively and innovatively. This activity is based on fun learning and
    underpinned by 21st century learning skills. Students will work
    independently using ICT skills to complete the project. In order to
    complete the project, students are required to do a lot of reading and to
    conduct discussions.
    STUDENTS Students will be able to:
    OUTCOME i. access information online.
    ii. use creativity and innovation in developing their project.
    iii. present their projects orally.
    iv. produce a scrapbook.
    STEPS OF 1. The English teacher selects a theme for each level/standard.
    IMPLEMENTATION Example:

    Form 5 Social Issues

    2. The teacher explains to the students the steps to create a scrapbook.


    • Students are to work on the scrapbook after school.
    • The topic is given to the students in class.
    • The teacher explains to the students how to surf for related
    information online.
    • The students discuss in their respective groups the outline for their
    scrapbooks.
     Students go online to gather information about their topics.
    • Students are to discuss the information found and plan the layout of
    the information in their scrapbooks.
    • Students are allowed time to complete their scrapbook (the time to
    complete the scrapbook is set by the teacher).
    • The students are encouraged to be creative in producing their
    scrapbook.
    3. The teacher keeps track of the students’ progress.
    4. The teacher prepares a checklist to monitor the progress made by
    students.
    5. The teacher sets the date and time for presentation according to the
    availability of time.
    6. During the oral presentations, students need to use the English language
    to present their projects.

    2. To enrich students’ proficiency in reading and writing informal letters.
    3. To create a purpose for writing.
    4. To encourage students to share views, opinions and ideas in English
    TIME On-going
    DESCRIPTION This activity is a collaborative partnership between two schools. Students
    from both schools write to each other in English on a regular basis and write
    about their views, opinions and perspectives on how the English activities
    that teachers have conducted for HIP have helped to improve their
    proficiency and confidence in English. In addition, students are able to
    develop their writing skills in English and develop good relationships with
    peers from another school.
    STUDENTS By the end of this activity, students will be able to:
    OUTCOME
    i. write informal messages to one another in English.
    ii. practise reading and writing letters to pen-pals in English.
    iii. express their views, opinions and thoughts in written form.

    STEPS OF 1. Teachers from both schools meet to discuss and plan the project.
    IMPLEMENTATION 2. List of students’ names and information are exchanged and each student
    is assigned to a pen pal.
    3. It is crucial that the teacher in-charge monitors the exchanges to avoid
    controversial issues.
    4. Students write to their friends /pen-pal by exchanging stories, opinions
    and views on the English activities conducted in their respective schools.
    5. Students are not allowed to share their private information, phone
    number, email, and social media account. All letters will be closely
    monitored by teachers.
    6. Students are encouraged to share their experiences on their interactions
    with their pen pals during English lessons.
    7. Students are to compile their letters in their portfolios.
