Index of Refraction

The index of refraction is a key parameter that measures the speed of light in a material and must be entered into OTDR equipment to obtain accurate fiber optic distance measurements. It represents the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a material. Glass has an index of refraction of approximately 1.50, while air has an index of 1.00. The index of refraction for a particular fiber can be found on the specifications from the fiber manufacturer.

Index of Refraction

The basic optical property of a material is the index

.of refraction
It is also one of the key parameter that needs to be
key-in into OTDR as to get accurate result on actual
.fiber optics distance measurement
The index of refraction (n) measures the speed of
.light in an optical medium

The speed of light (c) in free space or vacumm is

-: Therefore index of refraction of a material is equivalent to

When light enters a different material ( from glass into air or from air
.into glass)is the speed changes
.This causes the light to bend or refract
.Light will always travel slower in the fiber material than in air
.The index of refraction for glass is approximately 1.50 or lower
.The index of refraction for air is exactly 1.00
In order to get the actual fiber optics length measurement using
OTDR, one is required to enter fiber optics index of refraction into
one of OTDR key parameters. The fiber optics index of refraction
.could be obtained from the fiber optics cable manufacturer

Fiber Optics - Color Blind Test

If you are a color blind person, it

would be most difficult for you and
your team to do fiber optics fusion
splicing or termination in sequence.
Why ?

Because fiber optics has 12 color

coded as per TIA/EIA 598-A. The
color coded in sequence is :- Color Blind Test
If you have a normal color vision, you will
1 Blue be able to see 73.
2 Orange If you are colorblind you will have
3 Green difficulty to see 73.
4 Brown
5 Gray
6 White
7 Red
8 Black
9 Yellow
10 Purple
11 Rose
12 Aqua
