ABSTRACT

University graduates have often been criticised that they lacked practical skills and the
relevant production skills needed by the industry.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme was then designed for the purpose of
reducing or where possible eradicating the problem of producing graduates who have
theoretical knowledge alone without the necessary skills to back up their knowledge by
providing them a platform to gain first hand practical experience.

This report is exclusively based on my Industrial Work Experience program at Pinet

Informatics Ltd. in partial fulfilment of the award of Bachelor’s Degree in Computer
Engineering, University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba.

This report is aimed at providing a detailed and concise description of my Industrial

Training at Pinet Informatics Ltd. and to reveal the usefulness of my Industrial Training
to my academic pursuit.

CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION

THE SIWES

ADVENT OF SIWES

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was initiated in 1973 by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF). This was so as to minimise the shortcomings and
weaknesses in the formation of graduates. SIWES was introduced so as to update
practical knowledge of students in Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of
Technology. It was aimed at bridging the gap between the theoretical knowledge acquired
in classes and the technical knowledge required in the industries, by exposing students to
the industrial environment while providing them with the opportunities to apply their
educational knowledge in real work situations so that they can contribute their quota to
national, economic and technological development after graduation. Over the years,
SIWES has contributed immensely to the building and development of a pool of
indigenous technical skills in Nigeria. These technical skills have been fundamental
towards the technological growth of Nigeria.

The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth transition
from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of tertiary institutions the
opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling
machinery and equipment which are usually not available in the educational institutions.
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma
and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the
country, in accordance with the education policy of government.

The Operators of the SIWES Scheme are

 The ITF

 The coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE)

 Employers of labour

PAGE 4
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

 The institutions.

The Funding of the SIWES Scheme is done by The Federal Government of Nigeria

The Beneficiaries of the SIWES Scheme are Undergraduate students of

 Agriculture

 Engineering

 Technology

 Environmental Science

 Education

 Medical Science

 Pure and Applied Sciences.

The Duration of the SIWES Scheme is as follows

 Four months for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education

 Six months for the Universities.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

 Specifically, the objectives of the student industrial work experience scheme as

stated by NUC, (1989) are as follows.

 Provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian Universities to acquire industrial

skills and experience in their course of study.

PAGE 5
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

 Prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation.

 Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and

machinery that may not be available in the Universities.

 Make the transition from the university to the world of work easier, and thus
enhance students‟ contacts for later job placement.

 Provide students with opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real

work situation, thereby bridging the gap between university work and actual
practice, and enlist and strength employer’s involvement in the entire education
process of preparing university graduates for employment in industry

I undertook my SIWES training at PINET Informatics Ltd. which I located at 2, Buffalo

House, Ikeja Lagos from 12th June, 2017 to 30th November, 2017.

CHAPTER 2 - PINET INFORMATICS LIMITED

Brief History of Pinet Informatics

Pinet Informatics was founded by Engineer Lanre Ajayi. Pinet Informatics was founded
as the first ISP company in Nigeria. They were at the frontline of providing internet
services for individuals to large companies.

But since then Pinet has been converted to a technology provider that has focused itself
on providing digital services for certain business sectors such as the insurance sector and
also the government arm of Nigeria. They have developed two platforms for which they
have provided the insurance sector and the government organizations to use which are
insurancemarket.ng and digiserve.ng. These two platforms are subsidiary companies
under Pinet Informatics.

The 6 months Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) which is a

requirement for the completion of my course of study was undertaken at Pinet
Informatics.

I was an Industrial Attaché (IT) under the E-services department.

The Industrial Training was based on managing the digital platforms developed by Pinet,
troubleshooting these platforms and also learning about web hosting and website
development.

CHAPTER 3 – WORKDONE DURING SIWES

DESCRIPTION OF WORK EXPERIENCE

I was introduced to website design using WordPress. This was necessary as my first work
project was to design a website for NIPOST (Pinet has an MoU signed with NIPOST).

I had to learn the basics of wordpress, how to use plugins and themes, and also how to
develop them.

In other to use wordpress, it has to be installed in a server and that was when I learnt how
to create a locally hosted server using XAMPP on my PC and I was also taught how to
get a live website and the functionalities of the cPanel.

Then I was introduced to the digital platforms insurancemarket.ng and digiserve.ng. I

learned the usage and features of the platform and how to create forms and products on
the platform.

EXPERIENCE USING WORDPRESS

WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) based

on PHP and MySQL. To function, WordPress has to be installed on a web server, which
would either be part of an Internet hosting service or a network host in its own right. An
example of the first scenario may be a service like WordPress.com, for example, and the
second case could be a computer running the software package WordPress.org. A local
computer may be used for single-user testing and learning purposes. Features include a
plugin architecture and a template system. WordPress was used by more than 27.5% of
the top 10 million websites as of February 2017.WordPress is reportedly the most
popular website management or blogging system in use on the Web,[8] supporting more
than 60 million websites. WordPress has also been used for other application domains
such as pervasive display systems (PDS).

Overview

PAGE 8
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

WordPress has a web template system using a template processor. Its architecture is
a front controller, routing all requests for non-static URIs to a single PHP file which
parses the URI and identifies the target page. This allows support for more human-
readable permalinks.

Themes

WordPress users may install and switch among different themes. Themes allow users to
change the look and functionality of a WordPress website without altering the core code
or site content. Every WordPress website requires at least one theme to be present and
every theme should be designed using WordPress standards with structured PHP,
valid HTML (HyperText Markup Language), and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Themes
may be directly installed using the WordPress "Appearance" administration tool in the
dashboard, or theme folders may be copied directly into the themes directory, for
example via FTP.[15] The PHP, HTML and CSSfound in themes can be directly modified
to alter theme behavior, or a theme can be a "child" theme which inherits settings from
another theme and selectively overrides features.[16] WordPress themes are generally
classified into two categories: free and premium. Many free themes are listed in the
WordPress theme directory, and premium themes are available for purchase from
marketplaces and individual WordPress developers. WordPress users may also create and
develop their own custom themes. The free theme Underscores created by the WordPress
developers has become a popular basis for new themes.

Plugins

WordPress' plugin architecture allows users to extend the features and functionality of a
website or blog. WordPress has over 50,316 plugins available,[19] each of which offers
custom functions and features enabling users to tailor their sites to their specific needs.
These customizations range from search engine optimization, to client portals used to
display private information to logged in users, to content management systems, to content
displaying features, such as the addition of widgets and navigation bars. Not all available
plugins are always abreast with the upgrades and as a result they may not function
properly or may not function at all. Most plugins are available through WordPress

PAGE 9
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

themselves, either via downloading them and installing the files manually via FTP or
through the WordPress dashboard. However, many third parties offer plugins through
their own websites, many of which are paid packages.

Other features

WordPress also features integrated link management; a search engine–friendly,

clean permalink structure; the ability to assign multiple categories to posts; and support
for tagging of posts. Automatic filters are also included, providing standardized
formatting and styling of text in posts (for example, converting regular quotes to smart
quotes). WordPress also supports the Trackback and Pingback standards for displaying
links to other sites that have themselves linked to a post or an article. WordPress posts
can be edited in HTML, using the visual editor, or using one of a number of plugins that
allow for a variety of customized editing features.

EXPERIENCE WORKING ON THE C PANEL

cPanel is an online Linux-based web hosting control panel that provides a graphical
interface and automation tools designed to simplify the process of hosting a web site.
cPanel utilizes a 3 tier structure that provides capabilities for administrators, resellers, and
end-user website owners to control the various aspects of website and server
administration through a standard web browser.

In addition to the GUI, cPanel also has command line and API-based access that allows
third party software vendors, web hosting organizations, and developers to automate
standard system administration processes.

cPanel is designed to function either as a dedicated server or virtual private server. The
latest cPanel version supports installation on CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux(RHEL),
and CloudLinux OS. cPanel 11.30 is the last major version to support FreeBSD.

Application-based support includes Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Perl,

and BIND (DNS). Email based support includes POP3, IMAP, and SMTP services.
cPanel is accessed via https on port 2083.

EXPERIENCE WORKING ON INSURANCEMARKET.NG AND

DIGISERVE.NG

These are digital platforms owned by Pinet.

INSURANCEMARKET.NG

This a platform where insurance companies sell insurance to consumers. The idea behind
insurancemarket.ng comes from the fact that we are in the digital age where everything is
done on mobile phones and computers. Insurancemarket.ng provides a way for insurance

PAGE 14
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

companies to add to the traditional way of doing things. This platform helps to reach out
to millions of Nigerians that rely on their phones majorly by using SEO techniques and
informative Ads in other to highlight the importance of buying insurance and how easy
the process can be. This is termed e-Insurance.

DIGISERVE.NG

This was created to make government services easier to provide. Money transfer services
are being developed here. Also tax forms have been developed here.

RELEVANCE TO ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE

PAGE 19
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

I found my Industrial Training to be very useful as I began to understand the Relationship

between the practical knowledge I received there and the theoretical knowledge I had
obtained in school. The training has been relevant to many of my school courses in
various ways as outlined below.EEG

Course Code Course Title Relationship Between School Courses and

Experience Gained
EEG 206; EEG Computer Programming My knowledge gained from this course
311 and CPE helped in the understanding of the
405 languages WordPress is based on. I was
introduced to the concept of sql database
in this course.
EEG 204, EEG Logic and Digital The knowledge gained on this course
314 AND CPE Electronics helped in my understanding of the integral
411 price calculator add-on which was
implemented on insurancemarket.ng and
digiserve.ng. The add-on is designed to use
logic in determining the price on this digital
platforms.

CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

The only real challenge encountered at my place of work sudden internet speed
drops. Troubleshooting the digital platforms wasn’t an easy task at times due to the
internet speed at times.

CHAPTER 5 - CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

CONCLUSION

PAGE 20
OLUSETIRE OLUMAYOWA 130408042

This industrial training has afforded me the basic practical and theoretical
knowledge that I may not have gotten from the lecture room. It also gave me the
opportunity to have a feel of what it would be like after graduation when I start
working.

After my internship with Pinet I can effectively design websites, know how to
setup a web host, and also possess a good knowledge of digital platforms.

I also gained invaluable knowledge from sitting in the business consultancy

meetings concerning insurancemarket.ng.

I can confidently say that the experience gotten from this training was a
worthwhile experience.

RECOMMENDATION

Based on my six months internship with PINET, I have been able to come up with
the following recommendations

 Acquiring internship continues to be a huge problem for aspiring interns. I

would recommend that universities should assist students in securing
industrial placements so the students can be engaged early enough.

 Industrial training establishments should be properly trained to correctly

train interns as their role requires and not leave them doing mundane tasks.
