Simple Stress

This document contains 6 mechanics of materials problems involving concepts like stress, strain, modulus of elasticity, deformation of materials under load. The problems cover axial loading of rods and beams, direct shear testing of wood, stresses in riveted joints, and thermal expansion of multi-material structures. Solutions require using stress-strain and material property relationships.

PROBLEM 1.

A block of wood is tested in direct shear using the leading frame and test specimen shown in the figure. The load
P produces shear in the specimen along plane AB. The height h of the plane AB is 50mm and its width (perpendicular to the
plane of drawing) is 100mm. If the load P = 16kN, what is the average shear stress in the wood? Express the answer in MPa.

PROBLEM 2. In the figure shown, three tubes are subjected to the loads as indicated. The diameters of the tubes are d1 =
15mm, d2 = 35mm, and d3 = 15mm. Determine
(a) the load in each tube and indicate whether tension (+) or compression (-) and
(b) the stress (Mpa) in each tube.

PROBLEM 3. A single riveted lap joint of two similar plates as shown in the figure below has the following
geometrical and details.
(a) width of the plate w = 200 mm,
(b) thickness of the plate t = 5 mm,
(c) number of rivets n = 3,
(d) diameter of the rivet dr = 10 mm,
If P = 22.50 kN, determine
(a) allowable tensile stress of the plate
(b) allowable shear stress of the rivet
(c) allowable bearing stress of the rivet

PROBLEM 4. The uniform beam is supported by two rods AB and CD that have cross-sectional areas of 15mm2 and 20mm2 ,
respectively. If d = 2m, determine the average normal stresses in each rod. Express the stresses in MPa.
PROBLEM 1. A specimen is originally 1 ft long, has a diameter 0f 0.5 in., and is subjected to a force of 500 lb. When
the force is increased from 500 lb to 1800 lb the specimen elongates 0.009 in.
(a) Determine the modulus of elasticity (ksi) for the material if it remains linear elastic.
(b) What is the strain developed in the specimen in in/ft?
(c) What is the stress in the specimen as it elongates 0.009 in? Express the answer in psi.

PROBLEM 2. A bar having a length of 5 in. and cross-sectional area of 0.7 is subjected to an axial force of 8000 lb. If
the bar stretches 0.002 in., determine the modulus of elasticity of the material. The material has linear-elastic
behavior.

PROBLEM 3. The acrylic plastic rod is 200 mm long and 15 mm in diameter. If an axial load of 300 N is applied to it,
determine the change in its length and the change in its diameter. Ep = 2.70 GPa, νp = 0.4.

PROBLEM 4. In the structure shown on the right, horizontal

member BDF is supported by two brass members, AB and EF, and a
steel member CD. Both AB and EF have cross sectional areas of .5
in2. Member CD has a cross sectional area of .75 in2. The structure
is initially unstressed and then experiences a temperature increase
of 40 degrees celsius. For this structure:
(a) Draw a Free Body Diagram showing all support forces and loads
(b) Determine the axial stress that develops in steel member CD
(c) Determine the resulting movement of point D .
Est = 30 x 106 psi; Ebr = 15 x 106 psi; Eal = 10 x 106 psi αst = 12 x 10-6 /oC; αbr = 20 x 10-6 /oC; αal = 23 x 10-6 /oC

PROBLEM 5. A heavy object is being raised from the sea floor by a tug equipped with a crane and winch. The steel
cable has an effective modulus of elasticity equzl to 140 GPa and the load produces a stress in the cable equal to 290
MPa. If the loaded part of the cable is 90 m long,
(a) how much does the cable stretch when the load is picked up? Express the answer in millimetres.
(b) What is the strain developed in the cable? Express the answer in mm/m.

PROBLEM 6. A solid circular steel rod 6 mm in diameter and 500 mm long is rigidly fastened to the end of a square
brass bar 25 mm on a side and 400 mm long, the geometric axes of the bars lying along the same line. An axial
tensile force of 5 kN is applied at each of the extreme ends. Determine
(a) the deformation of the steel rod in mm
(b) the deformation oig the brass bar in mm.
(c) total elongation of the assembly
For steel, E= 200 GPa, and for brass, E= 90 GPa
