This document is a lesson plan for a math class focusing on adding and subtracting fractions. The lesson plan includes reviewing mixed numbers, demonstrating how to find common denominators to add fractions, introducing subtracting fractions using the same process as adding fractions, and having students practice with example problems. Students will then complete an activity involving putting broken cookies back together using fraction pieces to add and subtract fractions in a real world context.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions Today's SOL Focus MA.4.2.a Compare and order fractions and mixed numbers Procedure/Activites Warm Up Question (attached)
Review what mixed numbers are
1. 2 5/8 Review how to find common denominators and how to add fractions 1. 2/4 + 1/6 Introduce subtracting fractions 1. Explain that subtracting fractions uses the same steps as adding fractions when it comes to finding a common denominator, and then (just as you add the numerators together when adding fractions) you subtract the numerators from each other to get the final answer 2. Do a couple of example problems (draw representations on the board to go along with the examples to give students visuals) 1. 7/8 - 1/4 2. 4 2/3 - 1 1/2 3. 15/21 - 3/7 Have students practice adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with the broken cookie activity (attached) 1. Copies of the cookie pieces need to be cut out (optional: and laminated for future use) for students beforehand 2. Students are paired and work on this activity together 3. Give each pair of students a set of cookie pieces 4. Read the short story to go along with the activity so that students understand what they are supposed to do 5. Have students fit the right cookie pieces to the middle, star-looking, pieces to put the cookies back together 6. Check students' work when they are finished If students begin to finish early, have them work on IXL 1. R1 through R17 Attachments FREEAddingSubtractingFractionFunActivity.pdf Warm-Up.png
