Stair Framing

1) Name the parts of a stair system.

A) Calculate the stringer measurements if the rise of the stair is 4’8”.


Use the Construction Master IV to calculate the measurements.
1) Enter 4’8” Rise. (Enter 4 key, foot key, 8 key, inch key, rise key)
2) Identify a number that you would think may work as the run. Let’s try 5’9”.
3) After entering the rise (step 1), enter 5’9” Run. (Enter 5 key, foot key, foot key, 9 key,
inch key and RUN key).
4) Hit the stair key once, you will get information that you will need to record. Continue
Hitting the STAIR key and record all segments of information needed to complete
your stair calculation.
A) Risers RSRS __7__ Number of risers
B) Riser size R-SZ __8__ Between 7 – 7 5/8” best
C) Riser error +- __0__
D) Treads TRDS __6__ Number of Treads
E) Tread Size T-SZ __11 ½” 10” – 12” range
F) Tread error T +- __0_
G) Stringer length STRG __7’0 1/16”
H) Incline degree INC __34.8 Must be 30 – 35 degrees
I) Riser Height standard R-HT _7 ½”__ Standard riser height

B) Riser should be around 7” to 7 5/8”.


C) Risers cannot be too tall because it is difficult for senior citizens and young kids to climb the
steps. Riser sizes are getting shorter for this reason.
D) The historic houses in town typically have very steep stairways when comparing to today’s
standards.
E) When cutting the stringer, we must not cut past the lines of the steps and risers because it
will weaken the strength of the wood.
F) Degree of the stair should be between 30 and 35 degrees.
G) Treads of a stairway should be between 10” and 12”.
H) Headroom on a stairway must be at least 6’8”.
