Learning Goal: SWBAT Find The Solution of Linear Systems by Using The Method of Addition or Subtraction

This document is notes from a presentation on solving linear systems by addition or subtraction. It contains examples of solving systems of equations by identifying which variable to eliminate, adding or subtracting the equations accordingly, substituting values back into the original equations to solve for the other variable, and checking solutions. It also addresses when a system would have no solution or infinitely many solutions.

Eq. 1: Opposite signs: ADD

Eq. 2: Same signs: SUBTRACT

Where to start: Think "What variable can I easily eliminate by

addition or subtraction?" y
then "Should I be adding or subtracting? adding (because +y and y have
opposite signs)

What to do:
Step 2: Substitute "x" into 1 of the original
Step 1: Add the equations  equations and solve for "y"
and simplify
2x  y = 1
Eq. 1 + Eq. 2
2(1/3)  y = 1

9x + 0 = 3
9x = 3

x =

Step 3: Check your work by plugging in (x,y) into either original
equation
2x  y = 1

Eq. 2:

What variable can we easily eliminate by addition or subtraction? y

Should we add or subtract? subtract (because 2x and 2x have the same sign
Step 1: Subtract the  Step 2: Substitute "y" into 1 of the
equations and simplify  original equations and solve for "x"
2x + 6y = 6
2x + 6(2)= 6
2x + 12 = 6
0 + 7y = 14
7y = 14
2x + 0 = 6
2x = 6
y = 2
x = 3

Step 3: Check your work by plugging in (x,y) into both original equations
2x  y = 8
2(3)  2 = 8
6 2 = 8
8 = 8
