CHE 411: Separation Processes (II)
Assignment # 4
Date: Monday March 31, 2008 Dr. Hasan Atiyeh
Due date: Monday April 7, 2008

1. A mixture of 100 kg mol which contains 70 mol % n-pentane and 30 mol % n-heptane is
vaporized at 101.32 kPa pressure under differential conditions until 50 kg mol are distilled.
Use the following equilibrium data to answer the following questions:
(a) What is the average composition of the total vapor distilled and the composition of the
liquid left?
(b) If the same initial mixture 100 kg mol/s is distilled in flash distillation and 50 kg mol/s
was produced in the vapor stream, what are the compositions of the vapor and liquid
streams?

x 1.000 0.867 0.594 0.398 0.254 0.145 0.059 0

y 1.000 0.984 0.925 0.836 0.701 0.521 0.271 0

2. A mixture containing 70 mol % benzene and 30 mol % toluene is distilled under differential
condition at 101.32 kPa (1 atm). One third of the feed is vaporized. Calculate the average
composition of the distillate and the composition of the remaining liquid. Use the equilibrium
data in the following Table.

Temperature Vapor pressure, kPa (benzene) Vapor pressure, kPa (toluene)

80.1 101.32
85 116.9 46
90 135.5 54
95 155.7 63.3
100 179.2 74.3
105 204.2 86
110.6 240 101.32

3. 100 mole of feed containing 70 mole % i and 30 mole % j is subjected to differential

distillation. If 80 % of the total charged mixture is to be vaporized. Calculate the composition
of the over head and residue. The equilibrium relationship, at the operating conditions is
given by the flowing equation: yi = 1.36 xi

4. 100 moles per second of the following feed is to be subjected to Equilibrium Flash Vaporization
(EFV) at 280 psia and148.9°C. Determine the amounts and composition of the vapor (V) and the
liquid (L) phases resulting from this equilibrium flash.

C2 0.20 2.90
nC4 0.30 1.50
nC5 0.18 0.80
