Lesson 13: Decision Icons: We Will Use The Following New Icon This Lesson

The document describes how to use a decision icon in Authorware to create a randomized test bank with multiple choice questions. Key points: - A decision icon sets up a decision structure that chooses a path depending on conditions, allowing branching and repeating of paths. - You can use a decision icon to branch paths sequentially, randomly, or based on a variable. It also allows repeating paths a set number of times. - The document provides step-by-step instructions to create a 5 question multiple choice test where 3 questions are randomly selected without repetition using a decision icon.

Lesson 13: Decision Icons

We will use the following new icon this lesson:

Decision Icon

Sets up a decision structure that chooses a path

on the flowline depending on conditions that you set.
Decisions

• A decision structure is comprised of two parts: A decision icon and one or more attached icons
called paths.

• A path may be any icon except an interaction, a decision, or

a framework icon.

• The decision icon manages the Branching and

Repeating of each path.

• With the decision icon, you can branch to the paths

sequentially, randomly, or you can use a variable to
determine which paths to follow.

• Decision icons also allow you to determine how

many times a path will be repeated.

• In the following exercise, you will learn how to use the decision icon to set up a test bank and
access test items randomly.

Step-By-Step Instructions

• Open a new Authorware file and set the background color under File Setup.

• Drag a decision icon to the flowline and name it Test Bank.

• Drag 5 Map icons to the flowline and label them Q 1-5 for
questions 1-5. Your flowline should look like the following:

• To set up the questions, double-click on the Q 1 map icon.

We are going to set up question 1 and then copy it as questions 2-5.

• Leave the settings at “Before next selection” and click on OK, Edit map.

• Drag an Interaction icon to the flowline of Q 1 and name it Question

1. Drag three display icons to the right of the interaction icon and
choose “Hot Spot” as the interaction type. Your flowline should
look like:
• Name your display icons George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,
and Benjamin Franklin.
• Double-click on the interaction icon and press OK, Edit Display.

• Type in “Who was the first president of the United States?

Click on the correct answer: George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin”. Place the Hot Spot boxes over
the appropriate answers and then jump back to the flowline.
Your interaction screen should look similar to the following:

• Double-click on the Response options above the George

Washington display icon. Select Correct Response and Exit
interaction and click OK. It should look like the following:

• Double-click on the Response options above both Thomas

Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin and select Wrong Response and
Try again and click OK.

• Now place appropriate feedback in the display icons.

For example, in the George Washington icon, type
“You are correct. Good job!”.

• We are now going to copy this question into questions 2-5. Highlight
the icons in the Q 1 flowline. It should look like the following:

• Select copy from the Edit menu. Close Q 1 and double-click on Q 2 to

open it. Click OK, Edit Map and then select Paste from the Edit menu.

• Change the name of the interaction to Question 2 and double-click on

the interaction icon and click on OK, Edit Display.

• Change the question so that it reads “Who was the second President of the United States”. By
doing this, we will know what question we are on when we run the program.

• Close the Q 2 flowline and repeat the last three steps with Q’s 3-5, changing the number of the
question to suit as well as the display icon question.

• Now that we have our questions, we are ready to set the decision icon. We are going to set our
questions so that three questions are generated randomly without repeating a question.

• Double-click on the decision icon.

• Set the Branching to “Randomly to Unused Path”

and the Repeat to 3 times. Click OK. It should look
like the following:

• Lets run the program to see how it works. Since we

changed each question to reflect the question num-
ber it was on, we should be able to see that the
computer is randomly picking the questions without repeating any single question twice.

• Also notice that the user can not go on to another question until they get the correct answer.
