TUTORIAL 3

MEC411

1. What is the minimum diameter of a solid steel shaft that will not twist through more
than 3o in a 6 m length when subjected to a torque of 14 kN.m? What maximum
shearing stress is developed? Use G = 83 GPa.
d = 118 mm, τ = 43.4 MPa

2. A solid steel shaft of 5 m long is stressed to 60 MPa when twisted through 4o. Using
G = 83 GPa, compute the shaft diameter. What power can be transmitted by the shaft
at 20 rps.
d = 104 mm, P = 1.67 MW

3. A steel marine propeller is to transmit 4.5 MW at 3 rps without exceeding a shearing

stress of 50 MPa or twisting through more than 1o in a length of 25 meters. Compute
the proper diameter if G = 83 GPa.

4. A steel shaft with a constant diameter of 60 mm is loaded by torques applied to gears

attached to it as shown in Figure T3.4. Using G = 83 GPa, determine the relative
angle of twist of gear D relative to gear A.
θD/A = 2.17o

5. The tube shown in Figure T3.5 is subjected to a torque of 600 N.m. Determine the
amount of this torque that is resisted by the shaded section. Solve the problem two
ways; (a) by using the torsion formula; (b) by finding the resultant of the shear-stress
distribution.

6. The coupling is used to connect the two shafts together. Assuming that the shear
stress in the bolts is uniform, determine the number of bolts necessary to make the
maximum shear stress in the shaft equal to the shear stress in the bolts. Each bolt has
a diameter d.

7. The assembly consists of two sections of steel pipe connected together using a
reducing coupling at B as shown in Figure T3.7. The smaller pipe has an outer
diameter of 15 mm and inner diameter of 13 mm, whereas the larger pipe has an outer
diameter of 20 mm and inner diameter of 17 mm. If the pipe is tightly secured to the
wall at C, determine the maximum shear stress developed in each section of the pipe
when the couple shown is applied to the handles of the wrench.

8. A shaft composed of segments AC (steel), CD (aluminium) and DB (bronze) is

fastened to rigid supports and loaded as shown in Figure T3.7. For steel G=83 GPa,
for aluminium G = 28 GPa and for bronze G = 35 GPa. Determine the maximum
shearing stress developed in each segment.
