COURSE OBJECTIVES
NO.
1. To understand the behaviour of elastic solids under given applied loads and also the
limitations of the results given by the Elementary Mechanics of Materials.
2. To provide essential fundamental knowledge of the subject matter with compilation of
solutions that required in engineering practice and design.

3. To analyse solid mechanics problems using classical methods and energy methods
4. Have a good understanding of how to describe elasto-plastic behaviour, including yield
limit, loading-unloading phenomena, hardening and subsequent yield, flow rule for plastic
flow, as well as evolution equations for characterising hardening, etc.
1. To impart in depth knowledge of structural behaviour under dynamic loads and thus to
establish foundation for acquiring principles of seismic design
2 2. To familiarise with the dynamic analysis of structures subjected to time varying loads
3. To evaluate the dynamic characteristics of the structures.
4. To introduce dynamic analysis of distributed parameter systems.
1. To equip with the Finite Element Analysis fundamentals
2. To introduce basic aspects of FE technology, including domain discretization, polynomial
3 interpolation, application of boundary conditions, assembly of global arrays, and solution of
the resulting algebraic systems.
3. To introduce topics - coordinate transformations, condensation techniques, substructuring.
1. To impart the need for stability concepts
2. To provide a strong background in buckling phenomenon, buckling in columns, beam
columns, frames, plates and shells
4 3. Gives an idea of situations where the different structures are susceptible to buckling
4. To demonstrate the critical load computations on different structural members using
analytical, approximate and numerical methods
5. To perform stability analysis of simple framed structures.
