Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

Learn different types of flying vehicles and their construction

Define lift and drag forces

Understand different types of propulsion system

Understand the difference between rocket propulsion and jet propulsion

Unit I
Basics of Aeronautics : International standard atmosphere, temperature, pressure
and altitude relationships, lift, drag and moment, Basic characteristics of airfoils,
NACA nomenclature, propagation of sound, Mach number, subsonic, transonic,
supersonic, hypersonic flows, International law in aviation, class / category/type for
airworthiness certification
Unit II
Aircraft Configurations : Early flying vehicles, hot air balloons, heavier than air
flying machines, Classification of flight vehicles, airplanes and helicopters,
Components of an airplane and their functions
Unit III
Aircraft Structures and Flight : General types of construction, monocoque, semi
monocoque - construction, typical wing, materials used in aircraft, fuselage
Structures, aerodynamic forces, airplane flight dynamics, airplane controls,
maneuvers and load factor, airspeed, speed envelope, stall, airplane stability,
oscillation modes
Unit IV
Airplane Propulsion : Requirement of power to fly, balance of forces, various
means of producing power for forward flight, Basic ideas about piston engines,
Turboprop and jet engines, Use of propeller and jets for thrust production,
Comparative merits
Unit V
Rocket Propulsion : Principles of operation of rocket, Types of rocket and typical
applications, Exploration into space, Introduction to launch vehicles, Introduction to
solid, liquid and cryogenic rocket engines, Performance parameters, Comparison of
liquid propellant, solid propellant and hybrid rockets
Unit VI
Space Craft : Preliminary concepts of space, spacecraft, Introduction to manned and
unmanned space missions, Spacecraft power generation, Life support system for
manned space missions, Materials for spacecraft, Selections of materials for
spacecraft, special requirements of materials to perform under adverse conditions,
ablative materials, Life time estimation for a satellite
