In This Lesson The Auditory Learners As Well As Other Learners Will Thrive Since

This lesson plan outlines a 12th grade science lesson on the levels of biological organization. Students will learn about the 7 steps - molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, and population - through a lecture using slides, examples, and a physical "building blocks of life" game. Students will work in groups to build the levels using the game pieces. They will then answer a question individually about whether the levels are exclusive to humans. The plan aims to teach students about unity across living things and increase appreciation for Earth and global dynamics through exploring the common molecular foundations of all species.

MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Student___Yoanna P. Viltres_______________________________

Subject/Concepts____Science_____________________ Grade
Level__12th____

1. Standards: A Science lesson for 12th grade.

Observable objective: Students will be able to define the first 7 steps of the
Levels of Biological Organization.
Multicultural goal: Reverence for the earth and increased
awareness of our global dynamics
Observable objective: Students will be able to develop an understanding of the
chains that link all of creation, thus instilling a reverence for the Earth and increased
awareness of our global dynamics.
Auditory-Visual-Kinesthetic learning styles:
Auditory: In this lesson the auditory learners as well as other learners will thrive since
I will be lecturing briefly but in detail about the 7 steps of the Levels of Biological
Organization. I will define and describe each of the steps and break the information
down into cohesive pieces that will come together. I will make scientific jargon easy to
digest and will make comparisons and similes within my speech in order to fully explain
the 7 steps.
Visual: In this lesson I will bring slides and pictures of the 7 steps. In order to explain
and define a molecule or an atom as well as an organ system. I will provide my
students with a powerpoint presentation that will be utilized simultaneous to my
lecturing.
Kinesthetic: In addition to the power point I will bring in a game called the building
blocks of life. This game is a physical object, something similar to legos that when
arranged together properly simulate the 7 steps of Biological Organization coming
together to create an organism which in the lesson is the 6th step. Students will be able
to manipulate the objects in order to create an organism which will translate kinetically
into knowledge of the order of biological steps.
Gardner's Intelligence:
Linguistic Intelligence: In this lesson we will be making use of our Linguistic
Intelligence in order to present the lecture in a clear and precise manner as well as
students in order to retain and process the information being communicated to them.
Logical Intelligence: The Logical Intelligence will be in use while students define
and cognitize then level of biological organization. The act of processing this information
in steps called levels will invoke the students to use this Logical Intelligence.
Naturalist Intelligence: After the levels are defined and categorized we will make
use of our Naturalist intelligence in order to view all the steps in the process as a whole
picture which encompasses all beings in creation. The whole earth in conjunction with
its inhabitants, plants, animals and even the Sun will be analyzed with Naturalist
Intelligence.

2. Materials: PowerPoint, Building Blocks of Life Game, End Quiz, Jenga Set.

3. Instruction- learning Process:

Do First: Present building blocks of life game, tell students the objective of the
lesson. Today we will DISSECT A HUMAN BEING!
Mini-lesson: In the mini lesson we will use jenga blocks each labeled Molecule,
Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism and last Population. Instead of building I
will be going over the specific makeup and function of each block. While using
powerpoint for visual reference.
Guided Practice: In the guided portion of the lesson plan, students will get to use
the jenga blocks and build a population with the knowledge imparted onto them by the
powerpoint and the definitions given. They will be split into groups and will be timed as
they try to build the jenga set without titles on the blocks just descriptions and crucial
clues of the functions of the step written on it.
Independent Practice: In the independant practice portion the students will be
given one question "Are the first 7 steps of Biological Organization exclusive to human
beings?" If you think YES please explain, if you think NO please explain. They will have
35 minutes to answer this question in a well written grade level appropriate one page
paper. I will answer any question at this time in order to help students with any issues
they may encounter. This step of the process will help to solidify the information they
learned as well as to help students to use more of that Naturalist Intelligence which
allows them to convey these steps into the grander scheme of things. To allow students
to think beyond the human being and to be able to analyze, relate and employ the steps
of biological Organization into the workings of other organisms. In order to create
reverence for our earth, all organisms and an understanding of our global dynamics.
Exit Slip: Quick quiz handout which will mainly allow students to match the function
and characteristics to the name of the step.

5. Reflection: 1. In this lesson the student will learn about the building blocks of life,
starting with the chain that links all living beings. 12th grade students will learn the
concepts of unity and global oneness. 2. On the multicultural side the students will
have learned the idea of a one love, one race theory. The students will learn to
appreciate all of the species and beings on the planet obtaining a wider knowledge of
what makes them similar and different on the deepest molecular level.
3. In the Instruction Learning Process students will be able to interact with each other in
order to share and compose ideas with the jenga blocks in the guided portion of the
lesson. This team work will allow them express their ideas in a group so they do not feel
embarrassed when called upfront or when called to answer any questions. During the
portion of the Independent Practice students will be able to display autonomy and
retention as well as understanding of the biological steps. This part is crucial for me as
an instructor because I believe that writing privately will allow students to express their
understanding of the subject as well as their lack of understanding which will allow me
to grasp who will need more help. During the quick quiz at the end students will be able
to display the retention of the information, also will be good to cement this knowledge
previous to leaving the classroom as the post lesson activity.
4. The strengths in this lesson plan are the use of powerpoint the jenga game and the
essay portion. These components in the lesson cater to AVK learning styles which
ensures all students needs are met. The weakness in this lesson I believe is my
inexperience in lesson planning, lack of confidence in my part and a weak question on
the independent portion of the lesson. I believe with the right coaching I could come up
with a question that will be more cohesive and understandable for the students. I feel
some students may feel that the question on the independent portion may be
misleading or too broad.
