I. Introduction:

Operations Management is the function that designs, plans and operates production systems to
achieve the goals of the organization. Goals are to provide certain products (i.e. goods and services)
to certain customers in certain geographical areas. Production systems take labor, material, and
equipment and, through a conversion process, produce these products (i.e. goods and services).
Problems in this profession include designing products, designing and locating facilities,
evaluating and using technology, quality control, project planning, supply chain management,
forecasting customer demands, production and inventory management, and more. Some of these
problems will be studied in this introductory course.

II. Learning Outcomes:

Explain the role of operations management in manufacturing and service organizations


Identify the connections between operations management and the other parts of the
organization
Recognize problems such as forecasting, production planning, inventory control, quality
control,
and reliability
Assess a range of philosophies for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of
organizational operations.

III. Code of conduct:

While in the classroom you are expected to maintain Universitys set code of conduct. Please be
respectful while you are in the class and within the University premise. Please follow the class
timing and if there is a need for delay in class or leaving early must take permission from the
faculty. Anyone entering to the classroom after class attendance will miss class attendance for that
day. You are expected to turn off or silent the cell-phones and other noisemaking electronic devices
during the class.

This outline is a rough guideline for the students and the university, instructor, any other external
factors may change any of the planned works. Plagiarism will be treated a serious misconduct in
this course and therefore will be treated with high importance. In case of using others work students
are expected to cite acknowledgement in an appropriate manner.

IV. Study format and procedure:

Lecture discussion, Group Presentation, Class participation, Peer Discussion, Business Case
Studies, Brainstorming Session etc. All of these are oriented to develop the analytical capacity of
the students. Much attention is paid to the development of practical skills and knowledge. Students
are also expected to demonstrate their own learning capability and capacity.

V. Course Requirements:

a. Attendance: The students are expected to attend and participate in every class. However, some
exceptions can be considered depending on the severity of causes. Marking related to attendance
will be according to the set BRCU policy. If you are late for 15 minutes you will not get the
attendance on that day.

b. Quizzes: 2 quizzes will be taken and will count into final grading. There will be no makeup
quiz.

c. Term paper: Students will be assigned a company/brand/product/services and have to solve the
problem in a group. At the beginning of semester you are required to form a group consist of 5-6
person in a group. Each group has to present their respective area end of the semester. Follow up
work will be arranged in the second half of the class. Students will be awarded 1 bonus point for
asking each quality question during the presentation.

d. Midterm: A comprehensive midterm will take place after we finish at least 50% of course work.
No makeup of midterm will be allowed unless the student can prove valid reason and again it is at
the discretion of Registrars office.

e. Final exam: Final exam will take place at the end of course where students are expected to
demonstrate their overall learning both from classroom and external environment.
