There is a vast difference between names and in the past and now. In the

names of Gods and Goddess, they feel it is not modern.

For me, a name and a surname hold equal importance. I feel that my name

A pet name is a lovable name given by parents or family. It shows the love
and affection that the family felt at the birth of a child. And even when the

educated as well as uneducated people. It is a different experience with
all of them. I love my job for this reason only that I get to meet all these
different types of people.

18. What is your lifestyle like?

My life style is very simple. I come from a middle class family. We all go to
our work place every morning and return home. We dont party like the
upper class families. Instead we prefer to stay at home together whenever

20. Which period of your life do you like the most?

I prefer the childhood period of my life the most. It was so much fun. There
were no responsibilities, no tension. I just had to go to school and finish
my homework. Mammy would prepare delicious meals for the family and
all of us would sit and enjoy it together. Father would take us for picnics
and movies and trips out of the city. All we had to do was go there and
enjoy ourselves. As I grew older the responsibilities increased not only in
school, but also at home. I then understood the true meaning of life, that
life was not a bed of roses like I felt in school. So I love my childhood days.

21. What is the happiest moment of your life?

Since my childhood I had dreamt of making a career in the Science stream

and it came true when I passed my 12th in the Science stream and that
also with distinction marks. During my 12th Standard I worked very hard to
learn all subjects. I took private tuitions to get extra practice of all
subjects. I studied all subject with sincerity. I spent most of my time for
preparation of the final exam. But I was still afraid that the papers might
be very tough. Even after the exams I worried whether I had done my best
or not. So when I finally got my result, I was very excited and happy. My
parents were very proud of me and hence I also feel proud of myself. This
according to me was the happiest moment of my life.

22. What was the most challenging period of time in your life? Describe it.

There are lots of challenging moments, which I have faced until now in my
life. But the most challenging moment of my life is when I was preparing
for my final year exams. As I had missed lot of my lectures due to illness
that I had suffered during my academic year, it was very tough for me. I
was also mentally disturbed because of an untimely death of my uncle. It
was a total hard work and needed lots of patience. I maintained myself at
the time or preparation of exams. I put in my utmost efforts without losing
confidence. I faced it with lot of courage and even though I was in grief.
The outcome was filled with colours. I had achieved my desired goal,
which was unbelievable. I have chosen only this moment because I have
proved that hard work is the only key to success. Practice with total
concentration makes master of that subject. Also I was greeted with a lot
of pride from my family and friends, which was an unforgettable moment.
This is in brief is a description of my most challenging moment of life.

23. What is the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?

I remember, when I was in the 9th Standard, we had our final examination.
I was quite serious about my studies and studied very hard for my exams.
One day I had the Science exam. I practiced all my theories and question-
answers the previous day. The syllabus was too much, so I had to put in a
lot of hours. I hardly slept also that night. The next day I was well prepared
for my exam. But I was late to school. Everyone was already seated in
class for the exam. I also sat at my place. The teacher distributed the
answer supplement and the question paper. When I saw the question paper
I was shocked. It was the English paper. I immediately called my teacher
and told her that they had made a mistake; they had given me the English
paper instead of the Science. All the students started laughing. When I
was absolutely embarrassed and I started crying. The teacher consoled
me and asked to me to attempt the paper anyway. I was always good at
English so my paper was not very bad. I secured 70% marks. But I still
cannot forget that day. It was the most embarrassing thing to happen.

24. What is the ultimate goal of your life? What is your greatest wish / one
your wishes?

My ultimate goal is life is to be a successful person. I would like to make

my family and friends proud of me. I am not crazy about money, but I feel
that I should have enough money to satisfy all the needs of my family.
There should never be any time in our lives where we have to worry about
financial matters. But earning money is not my goal; I want to enjoy what I
do.

25. What success have you got in your life for which you feel proud?

There is no fixed definition of success. It changes from person to person

but to achieve a goal in a targeted time is called success. From childhood I
had dreamt of making a career in the Science stream and it came true
when I passed my 12th in the Science stream and that also with
distinction marks. During my 12th Standard I worked very hard to learn all
subjects. I took private tuitions to get extra practice of all subjects. I
studied all subjects with sincerity. I spent most of my time for the
preparation of the final exam. But I was still afraid that the papers might
be very tough. Even after the exams I was worried whether I had done my
best or not. So when I finally got my result I was very excited and happy.
This was my first step towards success. I consider this the biggest
success in my life. My parents were very proud of me and hence I also
proud of myself.

26. The best dream you have dreamt.

I love to watch movies; it is my favourite hobby. I also have a lot of

favourite actors and actresses also. Whenever there is a shooting going on
in my city, and I come to know about it, I rush there to see the actors and
actresses. But so far I have not met my favourite actor and actress. One
day I was coming home from the movies and I saw this huge crowd on the
road. I pushed myself into the crowd to see so many actors and actresses
in the centre. All the people were surrounding them. I was full of joy. I
could not believe that I was seeing them altogether like this. And all of a
sudden one of them pointed towards me and called me near them. I went
there and they asked me many things about me. We all spoke for hours and
hours. They gave me their personal telephone numbers also. They took me
with them to the hotel. I had a wonderful time with them, so I invited them
to my house the next day. They came to my house when I was sleeping.
They rang the bell and came towards me to wake me up. When I woke up I
saw my mother standing there calling out to me. I was surprised to see her
instead of my favourite actors and actresses. And then I realized that it
was only a dream, not reality. But I had enjoyed the dream it was the best I
had dreamt since a long time.

27. Name one positive phenomenon that has changed your life? How has it
affected you?

When I was in school I was not very serious about my studies. I would
make mischief with the other students. I rarely did my homework and the
teachers were constantly fed up of me and the other students. They
shouted at us all the time, and we did not even get good marks. But it did
not matter to us. We did not realize that the homework was for our benefit
only. One day my parents had gone out for a wedding and I was alone at
home. I would normally have watched TV in such a situation. But
unfortunately the TV was not working that day and none of my friends
were available either. I do not know what happened to me, but I took out of
my books and for a change did my homework. In school the next day, the
teacher checked the homework and surprisingly mine was the best. I was
praised in class. And that made, me very happy. I thought that by doing
homework for one day, I could get such appreciation then I should try
doing it every day. Since that day I started doing my homework regularly,
and all the teachers were very happy with me. This is a positive
phenomenon in my life and it has helped me all these years. I have become
serious about my studies since then.

FAMILY :

28. Do you live with your family?

Yes, I do live with my family. For a few years my parents had admitted me
to a hostel. That time I did not live with them. Life was quite difficult at
that time. But now I live with my family. Its the best place to be.

29. Describe your family / What does your father do? What does your
mother do?

We are four members in my family my father, my mother, my brother and

me. My father is a Doctor and has his own clinic. My mother is a Teacher.
She teaches English to Secondary school students. My brother is studying
in the Third year of college. I am working as a Marketing Executive.

30. In your family whom do you like the most and why? / admire the most /
inspired by the most?

I have a small family. I like all the members very much. But I get along
best with my brother. There is only one-year difference between my
brother and me. So we can share our experiences with each other. He is
not only my brother but also a great friend and guide. He gives me good
advise for my life. I love him very much.

31. Whom do you resemble in your family?

I resemble my mother. Many of my facial features are like her. When people
look at me they can easily say that I am my mothers child. We resemble
each other not only by our facial features but also our nature. My mother is
a cool person. She rarely gets angry. Even if we do something wrong, she
will explain it to us but not get angry. I am the same. I always keep cool,
always enjoy myself and accept life the way it comes.
32. How much time do you spend with your family members?

I am working person, so it is difficult to spend a lot of time with my family.

But I try to spend most of the evenings with them. I also plan to do
something with my family on Sundays. It is a rule in my house to have
dinner together. So however busy we are, we have to meet during dinner.

33. What is an ideal family?

An ideal family should be a family with lots of true love. There should be
intimacy among the members. Each member should be ever ready to help
each other in times of difficulty. They should be co-operative,
understanding, loving and caring.

34. What is the difference between the family in the past and now?

In the past, people used to live in joint families. The relationship was full
of love and caring. But today, families prefer to live as nuclear families.
Today, people are very materialistic. The only want money. This makes
them jealous of each other. They also fight with each other for money.
Families are divided so are their businesses.

35. Which kind of family do you like the most joint or nuclear?

Both the types of families have their own advantages and disadvantages.
But I prefer the joint family. There are so many people in the joint family.
We can enjoy life together and also help each other in difficult times. We
can share our feelings and thoughts with everyone, there are also many
people to advice and guide us. In a joint family people learn to share, care
for others and adjust with other members. In the nuclear families there is
less intimacy, and fewer people to share life with.

36. Nowadays what is missing among family members?

Todays world is a very competitive world therefore all the people are very
busy in earning for their survival. This does not allow them to spend more
time with the family. The members of the family rarely see each other. It is
only on some occasion that all the members meet. This has created a
distance between all the family members. The feelings are there, the
intimacy is there, but there is no time for one another.

37. How do you manage disputes in your family?

There are no disputes as such in my family. But there definitely are many
disagreements. The other members and I may all think in a different
manner, and we want to do things differently. So this creates
disagreements. We have to solve the disagreement very tactfully so as not
to hurt anybodys feelings. We need to put in combined efforts to manage
the dispute. We are quite understanding, so we first see the priority and
then make decisions.

38. What is your expectation from your family?

I dont have any great expectation from my family. I dont expect that they
do things for me. But what I only want is their undying love and support all
my life. I want them to be there by my side at any point of my life in
happiness and sadness. And more importantly I feel that they should
include me in all the problems of the family and also accept my help in any
manner possible.

39. What is your familys expectation from you?

My family has never asked me for anything. They have only supported me
in every way. They only expect that I take out time for them and spend
tome time with them. I am a workaholic, so when I am working I do not
remember anything else. I also forget important things of the house. So
that is their major expectation from me that I should be a part of
everything that happens in the family.

40. Who is an ideal father and mother?

A father is the head of the family, so he should be a good human being.

The other members should be able to look upto him, he should definitely
be loving and caring. He should be able to tackle all the problems of the
family members tactfully. He should be a good guide and philosopher to all
the members.

A mother is a fathers right hand. She is the one the child is most attached
to. She is the person from whom a child learns the first things of life. So an
ideal mother should be loving and caring. She should teach her children
good things like manners and culture and make her child a good human
being.

41. Who is an ideal daughter and son?

Whether a daughter or a son, they are both children of the same parents,
so they both should have the same qualities. Both should be obedient and
understand their parents. Both should understand that the decisions made
by their parents are for the childrens benefit only. They should never
revolt against their parents. If there is a disagreement they should talk it
out with their parents. They should take care of their parents and support
them at all times, especially when they are old.
42. Describe the family structure of your country.

In my country there is a great importance for family. People prefer to live

in the joint family where all the family members live together. Everybody
loves spending time with their family. The elders and parents are given
high respect. The whole family shares the problems and happiness of all
the members of the family. They celebrate festivals, birthdays and all
occasions together. Before taking any decision discussion takes place and
then the family decides what steps should be taken. Children take
blessings from their parents and grand parents every day. Familys respect
is taken into consideration before taking any decision. Parents support
their children both financially up to the time they start earning and in
return children take care of their old parents till the end of their lives.

43. Role of your parents in your development.

Parents play an important role in the development of children. It is not

possible to prosper without their guidance, love and support. Mother
teaches us important virtues of the life like honesty, punctuality etc.
Father teaches how to become smart to face this competitive world and
how to develop and maintain relations with friends and family members.
They both guide us about our future and care for us even when we do
wrong. Their undying support is very necessary for every person. And so
they play a very important role in a persons life.

44. How shall I greet some elder person in your family when I meet him?

We are Gujaratis by caste. In our caste and in our family we normally greet
one another by taking the name of God. It is a way to show that we are
Gods people and everything we do is related to God. We also touch the
feet of our elders to seek their blessings at all times. If you need to greet
someone in my family you can also greet by saying Jay Shri Krishna, if
you are comfortable with it. Otherwise, the best greetings is Namaste,
that is a general greeting which you can use anywhere in India.

45. Which type of family do you live in joint or nuclear? Which do you like?
Why?

I live in a joint family. I love living in a joint family where all the members
of the family live together. I get a lot of love and support from each
member of the family. Everyone celebrates birthdays, special occasions
and festivals together. Everyone helps each other in times of difficulty too.
The experience of the elders helps in taking important decisions. We have
so many people to share our feelings and emotions. We are never lonely. Of
course there are also many disadvantages in living together. We do not
have enough privacy. There is a lot of interference from the other family
members. We can never take independent decision. We always have to

FRIENDS :

46. Who is an ideal friend?

An ideal friend should be very understanding. He should be ready to help

his friend at any time. He should be with his friend at all times, in times of
happiness as well as in time. He should be with his friend at all times, in
times of happiness as well as in times of sorrow. He should be with his
friend at all times, in times of happiness as well as in times of sorrow. He
should be sensitive towards the feelings of his friend and always assure
him of his friendship.

47. Describe your friend circle?

I have a big friend circle. I have friends from school, from college and even
my work place. I also have friends from my neighbourhood. They are all
from different backgrounds. I am in touch with all of them. We meet
regularly and do different things. We are very fond of watching movies, so
we go to watch movies very regularly. We also go to restaurants for snacks
and meals. We enjoy ourselves together. But the best part of my friend
circle is that everybody is ever ready to help one another. At times of
difficulties everybody comes together to help the person. So now we have
become like a big family.

48. What is the difference between friendship and family relations? Who is
more important for you, your friend or your family?

A family is something that one gets by birth. It is blood relationship. But a

friendship is a chosen family. It is something that one chooses. There is a
lot of difference between both of them. Family is always there with us. But
in friendship only true friends stay on with us for a long time. Other friends
are only there with us for a small period of time. With the family we can
share all our ups and downs of life. But with friends we have a nice time.

I think both are very important. Family is normally most important. But
sometimes we have good friends who also become like family, so they are
equally important.

49. How do you make friends?

Friend scan be anywhere. We can make friends with our classmates, our
neighbours or even when we are travelling.

50. What is the importance of friends in our life?

Friends have a very important role to play in our lives. Friends are people
we grow up with. We need friends in our life to share our feelings,
thoughts, ideas, emotions etc. We can also share some plans of our life
and also so many other things, which we cannot discuss, with our family
members. It is friends who are with us all our lives, in happy times as well
as sad times. They are there to advice and guide us at all times. They
understand us and our feelings and are the best people to motivate and
encourage us.

51. What is the difference between friends in the past and now?

There are many examples of true friendships in the past. In such

friendships both the friends were not selfish. They did everything for each
other. They loved each other dearly. But in todays world it is very difficult
to get such friends. Today, people make friends for a reason. They are not
happy for the other persons happiness on wellbeing. They are jealous of
each other. The friendships are not from the heart like they used to be in
the past.

52. When do you meet your friends?

I meet some of my friends daily at night. After the whole days work, it is
good to relax with friends. But other friends I meet only on weekends or on
other holidays.

53. How do you maintain your friendship?

I keep in touch with all my friends regularly. I always remember their

birthdays and other important days. I also attend all functions of their life.
And more important I always help them whenever they need my help. I feel
making friends is easy but maintaining them takes a lot of love and
sacrifice.

54. What is your expectation from your friend?

There should not be any expectation from a friend. A friend is someone we

get along with well. So, I feel that I should spend more time with my
friend. So the only expectation I have from my friend is to take out time
from the busy schedules and spend time, to share each others
experiences of joy and sorrow and also to enjoy life together.

55. Who is your best friend?

_________ is my best friend. He has been my friend since my childhood. We

have grown up together. He knows everything about me, my likes, my
dislikes, my different moods etc. So, he understands me very well. Since
we know each other since my childhood, he has become like a family
member. We are always together. We do everything together. Sometimes
due to our work we dont meet for a long time. But when we meet we
catch up on each others life. We are really good together.

Among all my friends ANAND is my best friend. We are friends since our
school days. We studied together in the same class. We went to college
together. We sat on the same bench for attending our lectures and went to
the library or canteen of the college together. After our college we usually
went together to watch movies, attend parties or even shopping. There are
lots of qualities I appreciate about him. He is kind, hard working and very
serious. He is a picture of determination and sincerity. He is committed
towards his job. He is very much important to me in my life because he is a
person whom I trust the most. He always stood by me in all ups and downs
and he is the person with whom I can share my personal feelings. This is
my brief description of my friend.

56. What is the similarity or difference between you and your best friend?

In some ways there is no different between us but in others there are a lot
of differences. We are both honest and trust worthy people. We both have a
helping nature. People trust us a lot in their difficult times. Our taste in
many things like food, clothes, movies etc. is the same.

The difference between us is our temperaments. He is very short

tempered and takes impulsive decisions. His decisions change very fast.
While I am patient and think ten times before doing something. Once I
have taken a decision I stick to it.

57. What do you dislike about your friend?

My friend is very impulsive. He makes quick decisions without thinking

about the consequences or thinking about the future. He is otherwise very
understanding towards others. But for himself, if he likes something one
day, he will do it. But he may change it the very next day. And he may be
doing another thing the third day. Every time he starts something he feels
that it is good for him, but changes when he feels that something else is
better. I do not like this attitude of his.

58. Which friends do you prefers school / college friends? Why?

I like both my friends school friends and college friends. But I am closer
and have a more intimate relationship with my school friends. We have
shared so many years of our life together. We have seen each others ups
and downs of life. Even my college friends are good. We have shared a life
of enjoyment and then our career. So they are also important.

59. For how many years have you been in touch with your friends?
I am in touch with all my friends. Though some of them are not in the same
city any more, we still keep in touch through telephone or when they come
here. Some friends are abroad and wee keep in touch through email. But
we make it a point to always keep in touch. Sometimes we also chat on
the net. So we have always been in touch.

60. How do you spend time together with your friends?

I meet some of my friends everyday at night after dinner. We meet at our

crossroads and have tea together. We share our days experience with one
another. I also meet some other friends during the weekends. We either go
to watch a movie or go for dinner. Sometimes we meet at someones house
and have a get-together.

My hometown is AHMEDABAD, which is the biggest city of Gujarat State. It

is established by Ahmed Shah Badshah. It is situated on the banks of the

Ahmedabad is quite hot. Mostly Gujarati people live in Gujarati. It is
famous for business. It was kwnon as the Manchester of INDIA in the past,
as there were many textile mills in Ahmedabad.

Over population, pollution, traffic jams and slums are the major problems
of the city. Most of the problems of the city start due to over population.
There are a lot of vehicles in use in Ahmedabad, which leads to traffic

a place, which is made by family members, where feelings are shared. My

city and not in the heart of city. It should have neat and clean
surroundings, helpful neighbours and an easy access to the daily needful
amenities. I dont want my house to be multistoried. But it should be big
enough to accommodate all family members and guest at all times. They
should all be able to live with peace and harmony. There should be a big
drawing room in the center, kitchen, bedrooms and store rooms should be
big enough for easy utility. First of all it would contain a nice garden in the

Ahmedabad is divided into two parts by the river Sabarmati. The West side
of the river Sabarmati is developed in recent years and well planned and
beautiful. My residential area is on the west side of the River. This area is
developing very fast and new housing colonies, complexes, apartments,
shopping plazas and luxurious bungalows are under construction. The part
of the area where I live is already developed and is very beautiful, well
planned and peaceful. It is a perfect residential area, where one can live
peacefully and enjoy life. We have a good number of shopping complexes
where we can buy household goods as well as clothes, electronic

which I like the most, as it provides me a good chance for brisk walks
either in the morning or evening and relaxation. I like my area.

68. What can you do to develop your city?

My city needs a lot of development. But it is not possible for me to do
much single handedly. It also requires all the people living in my city to get
together and do something for the city. But if I have to do something, the
least I can do is together the people living in my area and get our whole
area cleaned. We can also get some plants, planted in the area. We should
look after the plants. We can also avoid throwing things on the road and
start throwing things in the dustbin instead. This will decrease the number
of mosquitoes and other insects. I think if I can do this in my area, and if
others do the same thing in their area, then definitely all the areas will
become better places to live in.

take you around fifteen minutes to reach my house. Once you get down,
you have to take the left road. You must go straight pass the income tax
four roads. Give going straight till you pass the Nehru Bridge. You still go
straight you will pass the Sanyas Ashram. When you still go straight. You
will reach the V.S. Hospital. Just opposite the V.S. Hospital there is a small

buildings. My building is the second one. The name is Shamiana. I live on
the Second Floor.

Leisure activities are very important for the mind and body. Even a few
hours of leisure time refreshes the mind. Everybody has a hectic schedule
everyday, so everybody needs a break from this, because all work and no

mind and our bodies.

game. Many people like to listen to music. Other surf or chat on the
Internet. Many people throw parties or visit new places. But there are
some people who do not socialize a lot they stay confined to the house
only.

I feel socializing has decreased from society to a large degree. In the

future I feel it will decrease even further. People will become more
computer oriented, personal relationships may not be very important.
People are becoming very materialistic nowadays, in the future the case
may be even worse. Leisure activities will be there but will take a different
look altogether.

truth are very difficult and challenging. The book gave me peace and
improved my character. The book is a perfect example to lead the best
possible life.

I have read many books during my school days and college life. But among
all these books that I like the most is WHO CAN WIN by Shiv Khera. I

me. I feel it is a must for every person.

Books are mans best friends. My favourite book is BHAGWAT GITA. It is a

holy book of the Hindu Religion. It is written by Valmiki. It is written in
many languages. It contains various chapters and describes the life style
and events of the kings along with Lord Krishna before 5000 years. The
book has influenced me in many ways. It has taught me the weapon of
truth, it teaches us to pursue our best efforts and abilities even in our bad
times, without expecting a reward. It has also taught me the tradition and
culture of my country and has provided me with a base on which to build a
bright future. I read it again and again. And every time I read it I learn
something new. I will read it anytime I get the chance. It is my favourite
book.

I like to read the newspaper. I read the newspaper everyday early in the

of the news. In the paper, we get all the statistics about a particular
situation. So, I like the television and the newspaper.

82. Which is your favourite newspaper? Why?

My favourite newspaper is the GUJARAT SAMACHAR. I have been reading

this newspaper since many years. It has been the best newspaper in my
city for years. Now there are other newspapers also like Sandesh and
Divya Bhaskar. But I still like the Gujarat Samachar. This newspaper gives
me all the news from all around the world. It also gives many different
articles, which are helpful for each member of my family for e.g. there are
recipes in the newspaper for my mother, since she loves cooking. My
grand father reads all the religious articles that the paper prints. My father
reads all the business related articles. I also get news of films and shows
in the city. There is also special emphasis on job opportunities and sale
and purchase of different things. Its a very informative newspaper, and so

People of different age groups read different things. If we talk about

read storybooks and film magazines. In addition to storybooks, college
students like to read books related to their subject also. They get more
knowledge from that. Working people and businessmen read business
related books. For e.g. a person in the Information Technology field will
read books on computers, whereas a person in Fashion Designing will read
Designing related books. Housewives normally read books related to
beauty care and cookery books. They also like to read novels. Old people
normally like to red religious books. It makes them feel closer to god.

84. When do children start learning to read?

I dont know exactly, but I think that they start reading at an early age. It
should be when they are in the first or second standard.
85. Which mode of entertainment do you prefer?

I like many modes of entertainment. It depends on the time and the

situation. In the evenings after I reach home, I feel quite tired, so I listen
to my favourite songs. It relaxes me very much. I feel fresh. But at night, I
watch TV with my whole family. We watch all the serials that are telecast
every day. I also listen to the radio during my work hours. We listen to
different music though at a low volume, but it energizes us to work hard. I
also surf the Internet for entertainment. During the weekend, I go the

program? What information do you get from it?

There is no particular radio program that I like. I listen to FM radio, the

name is Radio Mirchi. It is aired all day long. So there is no particular time
to listen to this program, or some particular information. They air different
songs on this channel, old and new movie songs, slow and fast, romantic
and sad etc. I like to listen to all of them I do not get any information from

about what is happening in the city. If there is an exhibition somewhere, or
if the traffic is jammed at some place etc.

87. What is the influence of Television on people?

Television is an important factor, which influences a persons behaviour.

An individual usually spends two to three hours watching television
everyday. This time definitely constitutes a powerful influence on the way
a person thinks and the way he behaves. The influences can be both
positive and negative. The positive aspect would be watching informative
channels like news channels, animal related channels, geography
channels, sports channels etc. certain programs telecast on different
channels like quiz shows, talk shows, group discussions etc. are also very
good to build up ones general knowledge. Watching these shows will
definitely have a positive outcome. But there are other programs telecast
like the ones showing violence, family quarrels and disagreements,
pornography etc., obviously have a negative impact on the viewer. Thus,
we can see that television does have a great influence on people.

88. Which is your favourite TV program? Which is your favourite television

serial?

My favourite Serial is OFFICE OFFICE. It is a comedy serial. It stars

Pankaj Kapoor and he also directs it. Pankaj Kapooor is a famous actor of
Bollywood. This serial is a comedy serial which basically shows the
corruption that prevails in the government offices and the difficulties that
a normal person has to face due to this corruption. Every episode has a
story of a particular department in government. The characterization is
beautiful. Every actor has a unique role to play and each of them plays his
role very well. The corruption of the government departments is shown in
a very shrewd but classy way. It makes us laugh but also gives us a
message. This serial is a real entertainment and I enjoy it very much.

I like to watch the program Guinness Book of World Record. This is a

wonderful program. It shows us the extra ordinary talent and extra
ordinary feats of humans, from different places and countries of the world.
It shows the greatest achievement by very simple and ordinary people. It
consists of a wide variety of records, which are recommended by special
judges at the world level. It is a very influential program. It has influenced
me in many ways. It has taught me that sheer hard work and balanced
mental strength can achieve even the most difficult things. It also shows
us that nothing is impossible, till we make an effort to try it out. I feel
proud of the people performing their own feats, and want to do something
for myself too. I really enjoy this program.

Awesome...+1 from me
keep reading about day to day topics and about your lifestyle and work
experience.

the more content is available in you brain, the more bullshit you can spew
out.

speaking is the easiest part in ielts, smile, make eye contact, show
confidence, the examiner will do his/her part for u. Just follow these tips.
#7Dec 8, 2010 at 4:13 AM
Tips:

1. Dont' answer questions with one liners or yes/no. Always elaborate your
answer with three to four sentences.
2. Use some vocabulary that you can show to another person that you are
well-read.
(Im not talking about pompous words but words that everyone posseses in
their passive vocabulary, words that you can understand with ease, but
unlikely to use them more often.) It will show them that you can
use/understand complex language as well if needed.

3. Use connectors. e.g in addition, on the contrary...if you are making two
diff points.

4. Keep your sentences simple and normal.

5. Lie as much as you can, just bullshiit, they are marking on your lexical
resource, pronunciation, fluency and not for your ideas.

6. Dress neatly. Not too much perfume.

7. Always greet with your examiner How are you, how ya doing?

8. Always end ur conversation with Thanks , Thanks a lot.

9. If you dont understand a question, dont second guess it, say it bluntly, I
beg your pardon or can you repeat that again?

10. Be natural. If you can't imitate American or British accent properly,

please don't try to speak in it.

11. Read as much as possible about general topics like food, music,
education in your country, hobbies, work, lifestyle..etc if you have ideas at
your disposal, language will flow automatically.

12. Don't try to speak fast or slurr your words.Speaking too fast does not
mean you are fluent. take a little pause as well.

That's it.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 1- Work

1. Do you work or study?
I graduated a few years ago and Im now in full time
employment.
2. What is your job?
Im currently an English teacher working for the British Council
in Ho Chi Minh City.
3. Why did you choose that job?
I was previously a lawyer and found it to be really stressful and
never had any free time, so after quitting that job I thought
teaching might be the complete opposite of being a lawyer, you
know not as stressful and more time off.
4. Are there lots of English teachers in Ho Chi Minh City?
Oh yes! There is a such a big demand for English as a second
language here and its also quite a cheap place to live compared
to many other big cities in Asia.
5. Do you enjoy your job?
Most of the time. Its very rewarding to be able to help people
every day and the students here are very hardworking and fun to
teach, but you sometimes have lessons that do go so well and
the money could always be better.
6. Do you get on well with your co-workers?
Yes, fine. I dont really see work as part of my social life, so I
dont socialise with them, so I suppose I could be more friendly,
but its just my nature to be a bit colder with colleagues. I think its
more professional to be that way.
7. What was your first day at work like?
There were lots of teachers starting at the same time as me, 10
I think, so we all had a big induction day. The more senior
teachers ran workshops with us to familarise us with the different
systems they had and then we went for a team dinner in the
evening.
8. What responsibilities do you have at work?
All of the teachers main responsibility is to plan good lessons
and then teach them to the best of our ability. On top of that we
have several admin. tasks to carry out like mark homework, fill
out attendance sheets and write reports.
9. Would you like to change your job in the future?
Yes, as I said before, I like working by myself, so I would like to
be my own boss. Im currently developing my own website, so if
its successful I will leave teaching and work on it full time. This
will also give me more time to work on other projects.
10. What is your typical day like in work?
I normally have 2 or 3 classes in the evening and I start the day
by doing all the planning at home. This normally takes between
an hour or two depending on the lessons. I then take the rest of
the day to spend with my family, before going to work around 3 to
print off my materials and then I teach all evening.
11. What would you change about your job?
As with most English teachers, we have to teach what is on the
curriculum and this can mean that you are teaching some things
that are quite boring or not very useful for your students, so I
would like to have more freedom to teach outside the syllabus.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 2- Study

1. Do you work or study?

Im currently a student at Queens University, Belfast.

2. What do you study?
I study law because its a really well thought of degree and Im
hoping to pursue it as a career in the future.
3. Is it a popular subject at your university?
Very popular, in fact its one of the most sought after courses. I
think there are about 350 people reading law at Queens. I think
lots of students parents want them to study law so they can get a
good job after they graduate.
4. Do you enjoy studying it?
Its such a huge subject that there will always be parts you like
and parts you dont like. I find Human Rights fascinating because
it can really make a difference to peoples lives. On the other
hand, modules like Land Law and Equity are really boring.
5. Do you get along with your classmates?
Yes, they are all really great. Most people like to socialise
together in the evenings and this makes us a very tight group. If
you know someone socially, it is much easier to work together in
class.
6. If you could change to another subject, what would it be?
I planned to study medicine, but then when I went on work
experience I fainted at the first sight of blood, so definitely not
that. Im a real history buff and read books about World War 2 all
the time, so I suppose it would have to be Modern History.
7. Do you plan to use the subject you are studying in the future?
Yes, Ive already started to apply for jobs as a lawyer. We
normally have to secure a job a year before we graduate and
then work very hard to get a high overall mark. After that, I will
probably do a Masters in law to become a specialist in one
particular area.
8. What is the most difficult part of your subject?
You have to remember lots of legislation and cases and not
only remember their names, but also how the affect each part of
the law and how they interact with each other. Physically it can
also be exhausting because we have to read very dense texts for
a few hours every day.
9. What would like to study in the future?
As I said before, my favourite type of law is Human Rights, so I
would like to do a masters in International Human Rights Law. its
right at the cutting edge of my field and there are also lots of very
high profile cases in the media, so its really exciting and
something I would like to become an expert in.
10. Why did you choose your university?
Mostly because it is close to my hometown and most of my
friends were going there. I kind of regret it now. Its a great
university, but because its so close to home it doesnt give you
much of a chance to experience new things and meet new
people. If I were to choose again, Id study abroad.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 3- Hometown

1. Where is your hometown?
My hometown is on the south-east coast of Northern Ireland.
Its called Dundrum and its about 1 hour south of the capital city.
2. What do you like about it?
Its an area of outstanding natural beauty and for me, one of
the most beautiful places of earth. It has everything; fantastic
beaches, rolling mountains, dense forests and picturesque
countryside.
3. What do you not like about it?
It can be a little bit boring because its really tiny. There are only
a few small shops and a couple of pubs and thats it! In the
summer, its OK because you can enjoy the outdoors but it would
be nice to have a few more indoor facilities for the winter.
4. How often do you visit your hometown?
Not as much as I should. I only get to visit about once a year
now to see my family because Im really busy with work and its
quite far away, but I hope to visit more in the future.
5. Whats the oldest part of your hometown?
There is an old Norman castle that sits on top of the highest hill
of the town. Its a ruin now, but there are some breathtaking
views from it and its easy to see why they chose that site for a
castle, because you can see for miles around.
6. Do many people visit your town?
Thousands of tourists visit every summer. They come from the
capital city mostly to get away from the hustle and bustle and
enjoy the peace and quiet. There are more and more
international tourists visiting because lots of scenes from the TV
show Game of Thrones were shot just outside the village.
7. Is there any way your hometown could be made better?
As I said before, the best thing about the town is its rural
beauty and you cant really improve that. If I had to say
something, it would be to improve the roads, they are in a terrible
state and cause a few car accidents every year.
8. How has your hometown changed over the years?
Since I was a child the town has almost doubled in size and
population. It used to consist of just one main street, but now
there are many new housing developments and apartments next
to the water. With all these new people moving in, it has changed
the character of the town a little bit, people are not as friendly as
before.
9. Are there good transportation links to your town?
The public transport system consists of just buses that pass
through the town on an hourly basis. One bus goes north to the
capital city which is really convenient if you need to do any
shopping and the other bus goes south where you can switch
buses and go across the border to the Republic of Ireland, so you
could say we have international transport links which is not bad
for a little town like ours.
10. Would you recommend the town to people with children?
Yes and no. It is obviously a great place to bring up kids
because there are so many things for them to do like swim in the
sea, play in the forest and run on the beach. However, the good
schools are pretty far away and I remember having to get up
really early every morning to catch a bus to school that was 20
miles away.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 4- Your Home

1. Where do you live?

I live on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, in a district called Tan

Phu, about 15 km from the city centre.
2. Do you live in a house or a flat?
I live in a 3 bedroom flat on the 11th floor of a big apartment
building.
3. Who do you live with?
I live there with my wife and little baby son.
4. Is it a big place?
Its pretty big for a flat. It has 3 large bedrooms, one for my wife
and I and one for my son when he gets older. It also has a
smaller bedroom that I use as a study and to store things in. The
kitchen is small but it is part of a big open plan living room, so
there is lots of space for the family.
5. What is your favourite room?
That would have to be my study because its the only room that
I can get peace and quiet in. When Im in there my wife knows
Im working, so she leaves me alone and I can concentrate on
my work.
6. How is your apartment decorated?
I dont like lots of over the top decoration, so I guess you would
describe it as minimalist. The walls are all white and the furniture
is also either white or black. There are very few ornaments or
pictures because again, I like to keep things quite minimal and I
hate clutter.
7. Is there anything you would like to change about your flat?
I would like to have a big balcony. We have a sort of balcony at
the moment, but we mainly use it for washing and drying clothes.
It would be really nice to have some tables and chairs on a
proper balcony, with maybe a few plants, so we could sit there in
the evenings and relax.
8. Do you plan to live there for a long time?
I really like where I live but it is really far from where I work in
the centre of town. It takes around 45 minutes to drive there by
motorbike and in the hot season and wet season it can be really
uncomfortable, so we will consider moving closer to the centre in
a year or so.
9. Do you have a garden?
Thats the best part of where we live, we have a huge garden.
It takes around 40 minutes to walk around it. It has a few play
parks for the kids, a number of gyms and four small lakes. We
are really lucky to have it and I try to go for a walk around it every
day, if I have time.
10. Are there many amenities?
Not really, because it is on the edge of town. If you want to go
for a nice meal, use a swimming pool, go shopping or head out
for a drink, you really have to drive for about 30 minutes. Thats
the major drawback, but if you are organised and buy everything
when you are in the centre of town, its not so bad.
IELTS Speaking Topic # 5- Fashion
1. Do you care about fashion?

I used to in my younger days, I remember always looking to

see what my favourite musicians were wearing and then try to
copy them, but now that Im older I dont really care as long as I
look smart.
2. What kind of things do you normally wear?
It depends what Im doing really. If Im working I always wear a
dress shirt and trousers, but we dont have to wear a tie. If Im
going out it will be more casual like a polo shirt and jeans and if
Im at home it will be really relaxed, just a t-shirt and shorts.
3. Are there any traditional clothes in your country?
I have no idea. There might be but I cant recall ever hearing
anyone talking about them or seeing someone wearing them.
4. Where do you usually purchase your clothes?
I used to go to the trendy shops when I was a student, but now
Im older and have little time I just like to go to a big shopping
centre or department store and buy everything there. Its more
convenient that way and it means I dont have to run all over
town just for a few clothes.
5. Have you ever bought clothes online?
No, because I dont trust their clothes to always fit me. I know a
few people who order lots of clothes online and order a few
different sizes and then send the ones that dont fit them back,
but I cant be bothered with all that. Its much quicker to go into a
proper shop and try the clothes on there and make sure they are
a proper fit.
6. Do people from your country think fashion is important?
More so these days. Our country wouldnt be very high on the
list of international fashion hot spots, but I notice people following
certain trends more. Last year, there was a red trouser craze and
everywhere you looked people had red trousers on.
7. What is your favourite item of clothing?
Probably my leather jacket. It cost a fortune and it makes me
feel really confident when I go out in it. I normally get a few
compliments also because it is quite slimming.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 6- The Internet

1. How important is the internet to you?

Extremely important. I depend on it for work, research, study

and entertainment, so without it Id be complete lost.
2. How often do you use the internet?
I use it constantly throughout the day, every day. I check my
emails when I get up in the morning, I use it for work all day and
then I watch videos, read books or listen to music through it at
night.
3. Do you use it more for work or in your free time?
Id say both really. About 50% of my job involves researching
and writing on the internet so I would use it for about 4 hours a
day. When I get home, Im normally too tired to go to the gym or
play sports so it is really easy to download a movie or stream
some music and I normally do that until I fall asleep.
4. What are your favourite websites?
For work my two favourite sites are WordPress and Google.
WordPress is a blogging tool that allows you to publish blogs
easily and maintain a professional looking website. Google of
course allows me to find the information I need quickly and
accurately. In my spare time, I of course use Facebook like
everyone else in the world, but my favourite site is The Guardian
because it allows me to keep up to date with everything thats
happening.
5. Do you use apps?
Im a bit of an app addict. My favourite app at the moment is
one called Stitcher. It allows you to listen to podcasts and helps
you discover new podcasts. You can download them and then
listen to them whenever you have time.
6. Do you think you use the internet too much?
I think most people do these days. My problem is that there are
so many sites and apps that you end up checking them way too
often and this wastes lots of time. It can also be a bit anti-social if
you are checking your phone all the time when you are with other
people.
7. How will the internet develop in the future?
I think it will be more on mobile phones than computers. Smart
phones are becoming more powerful and more affordable all the
time, so I think we will see a shift from people using the internet
on desktop computers to mobiles and apps rather than traditional
websites.
8. Are there any negative things about the internet?
Being connected all of the time is not a good thing. Before you
had to sit down at your computer and log on and that took time,
so you didnt do it so much. Now all people have to do is look at
their phone and this is too much for me. Ive been trying to leave
my phone at home when I socialise with friends and family to
stop myself from focusing too much on the phone rather than
them.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 7- Weather

1. How is the weather today?

Its really lovely today. There were a few showers this morning
and it was a bit chilly, but it has brightened up this afternoon and I
think it will stay that way for the rest of the day.
2. Whats your favourite kind of weather?
It depends what Im doing really. If Im doing something
outside, I like the weather to be sunny but not too hot because it
gets a bit uncomfortable after a while. If Im inside, I love listening
to the rain beating against the window and the wind howling
outside.
3. What is the climate like in your country?
Im from Ireland, so the thing people always complain about is
the rain. It is right on the edge of Europe so we get lots of rain
rolling in off the Atlantic. However, because we are an island it
means that we dont get very harsh winters and it hardly ever
snows. I think temperate is the word to describe our climate- not
too hot, not too cold.
4. Does the weather effect peoples lives in your country?
Yes, very much so. In the winter it is really grey all the time and
it gets dark very early in the afternoon. The lack of sunlight leads
to some people getting a bit depressed and I imagine thats why
people drink much more wine and whiskey in the winter to cope
with how dull everything is.
5. Do people change in the summer?
Absolutely, as soon as the sun starts to shine and it gets
warmer, people start to have barbecues, do more outdoor
activities and are generally happier. Unfortunately, it doesnt last
very long but people definitely make the most of it while the
weather is good.
6. Is there any type of weather you really dont like?
I dont mind when its raining or windy and I dont mind when
its cold, but when its cold, windy and raining all that the same
time, well thats horrible, especially if you have to work or do
something outside. I remember when we were at school we
would have to go outside in horrible weather to do P.E. and I
detested every minute of it.
7. Does bad weather ever effect transport in your country?
As I said before, it rarely snows, but when it does the
transportation system collapses. People are just not used to
driving in the snow and the whole country pretty much grinds to a
halt. Buses and trains normally stop running completely until the
snow thaws.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 8- TV

1. Do you like watching TV?

I dont get time really to watch TV and I dont like the fact that
you have no choice about what to watch, so no I would say I
dont really like watching normal TV, I much prefer streaming
something on my iPad and watching it when I like.
2. How often do you watch TV?
Id say maybe only a few times a month when there is a good
football match on. I prefer watching football on TV with other
people around because its a great atmosphere, but if its a
normal TV show I will just watch it alone at home on my tablet.
3. What kind of TV programmes do you like to watch?
I like dramas and thrillers. I dont really like anything that is not
set in the real world, so Im not a big fan of sci-fi or fantasy,
although I have been getting in to the latest season of Game of
Thrones. I also really like to watch documentaries about military
history, especially anything to do with the Second World War.
4. What are the most popular TV shows in your country?
The two most popular genres are soaps and reality TV. Soaps
like Coronation Street have always been popular because people
get to know the characters really well and the story lines can be
quite gripping. Ive no idea why reality TV is popular, I cant stand
it, all those C-list celebrities trying to become popular again. I
would rather watch paint dry, to be honest.
5. Do you like watching TV shows from other countries?
Yes, most of the programmes I watch are from the United
States. Networks like HBO and Netflix have the biggest budgets
and as a result can make some really high quality shows. I dont
think Game of Thrones could be made without a huge budget
and America is probably the only country that can make a TV
show on that scale.
6. Has the internet affected your viewing habits?
Absolutely, I watch most TV shows on the internet now, rather
than a normal TV. There are so many streaming services like
Netflix offering on-demand TV and it suits me to be able to watch
what I want, when I want. I also like to binge watch a series of TV
shows, just watch a whole series in a day or two rather than
waiting for the next episode.
7. What is your favourite TV show?
There was an American show called Fargo that I really loved. It
was an adaptation of a film made about 15 years ago. The plot
lines and characters were really interesting and the dialogue was
well written. Unfortunately, there has only been one season of it
so far, so I have to wait another year to see the next season.
8. What was your favourite show when you were a child?
I was a bit of a strange child because I didnt really like
cartoons like most of the other kids. But there were a few shows I
loved like The A-Team, Knight Rider and Air Wolf. They were so
cool and always had great action scenes. I was a bit obsessed
with violent action films when I was kid. When I think about them
though they werent really all that violent compared to shows
these days, I dont think one person was ever killed in any of
those programmes.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 9- Sport

1. Do you play any sports?

Not as much as I should. Im really busy with my job these

days, so I dont get the chance to do as many sports as I would
like. I try to play basketball on Saturdays for a couple or hours
and I occasionally play golf.
2. Have you played basketball for long?
Since I was about 10 years old. I remember playing a computer
game about basketball when I was about 10 and it made me
obsessed with the sport. From then on I played basketball every
day until I went to university and then other things took priority,
but I regret not maintaining it because it was something I loved
doing.
3. Do you watch sport on TV?
Football is my favourite sport to watch on TV. Im terrible at
football but I love watching it on TV, especially big games like the
Champions League. I follow Liverpool Football Club and so do a
few of my friends, so we normally go the pub every weekend and
watch whoever Liverpool are playing and a few of the other big
games in the Premiership.
4. What is the most popular sport in your country?
In my country there are two dominant sports Gaelic Football
and Hurling. Gaelic is a little like soccer but you are allowed to
pick up the ball with your hands and you can kick the ball over
the bar for one point or in the goal for 3 points. Hurling is played
with sticks and a smaller ball and involves hitting the ball over the
bar or in the goal. Both of them are really fast-paced and a bit
brutal at times. You can tackle someone much harder than you
can in soccer.
5. How do people in your country stay fit?
We are blessed with beautiful countryside and a nice
temperate climate so most people either go running or walking.
Lots of young people play field sports, but more and more people
are joining gyms. Gyms have really took off recently as people
worry more and more about their appearance. I think it has much
more to do with how good people look rather than actually
keeping fit.
6. Is it important for children to play sports?
Definitely. Sport not only keeps them healthy, but it also
teaches them discipline and keeps them out of trouble. For
instance, in my school the kids who were dedicated to sport also
achieved the highest grades in school and went on to good
universities where they continued to work hard.

IELTS Speaking Topic # 10- Food

1. Whats your favourite food?

I would have to say that its definitely steak. Its quite

expensive, so its a real treat when I get the chance to have steak
and I love all the things that come with it like pepper sauce,
chips, mushrooms and onions.
2. Have you always liked steak?
I didnt really like meat when I was younger. My mum said that I
only liked to eat sweet things or breakfast cereal when I was a
child. Naturally, Coco Pops were my absolute favourite.
3. Are there any foods you dislike?
I like most foods, but if I had to pick some I dont like, it would
have to be vegetables, especially green ones like broccoli or
cabbage. They either taste of nothing at all or really bitter.
Although, I try to force them down when I have to because they
are very healthy.
4. What are some traditional foods in your country?
Everything seems to revolve around the potato where Im from,
but theres much more to Irish cuisine than just one vegetable. If
you come to Ireland you have to try a full Irish breakfast. Its
made up of lots of fried meats, plus a range of bread
like wheaten, soda and potato bread, of course.
5. Do you have a healthy diet?
No, not at all. I like all of the things that are unhealthy like
sweets, fatty foods and junk food. I dont really have a lot of
discipline when it comes to my diet, which is probably why Im a
little overweight.

Describe a teacher who has influenced you in your education.

You should say:
Where you met him/ her.
What subject s/he taught.
What was special about him /her
and explain why this person influenced you so much.
Follow-up Questions:
How has education changed in your country in the last 10 years?
What changes do you foresee in the next 50 years?
How do the expectations of todays school leavers compare with those of the previous
generation?
What role do you think extracurricular activities play in education?
Possible Answer:
I consider myself lucky to get several very good teachers throughout my academic years. Among
them, I'd like to talk about Mr Smith who was an extraordinary teacher, a really good mentor and
who has a great influence in my education.

I met Mr Smith when I was in class 4 and he was our math teacher. Initially, we thought that he
would be a moody teacher and we would have to be very polite in front of him. This impression
came mostly because of his serious face and tidy dress-up. But soon we found that he is a very
friendly person and teaches us very well. He never made things complicated and tried over and
over again to explain something to us. He had a unique way of teaching. Seems like he would
start an interesting story and later we would find that he would relate the math to the story. Thus
everything we learned from him was interesting and that's why we remember most of the theory
and techniques of math he taught us.

I'd say he has a great influence in my education because he made a very strong foundation on
Mathematics. Later on, I studied Science and Mathematics was the most important subject. I
have always been good at math and that' mainly because of Mr Smith who had a major role in
making the subject interesting to me. Before I learned math from Mr Smith, my impression on
math was not good and I considered mathematics to be a very difficult and uninteresting subject.
But his teaching and influences changed my way of thinking about math and later on math
became my one the most favourite subject.
Tips for answering this cue card question:
Talk about a teacher you remember and liked. Say his/her name and the class/grade s/he taught.
Also, mention which subject she taught and what have you learned from him/ her. Following are
some of the reasons a teacher becomes influential for a student that you can talk about:

The way of teaching is very effective and interesting.

S/he has a great personality and leads an exemplary life.
S/he tells lots of example and stories to make the subject and topic interesting.
S/he is a famous teacher on your locality who also taught your elder brother, father etc.
S/he has a great personality and because of that, students like his/ her very much.
S/he has is successful explaining difficult topics in an easy and intuitive way.
S/he behaves very politely with all and never discriminates among students.
S/he is brave and speaks the right thing no matter what.
S/he teaches lots of moral values as well as inspires students to study properly.
Apart from teaching, s/he does some social works, creative stuff and or anything which is
beneficial for others.
S/he is a great orator and has a great personality.
Part 3: Details Discussion:
Q. How has education changed in your country in the last 10 years?
Answer: The truth is that ten years ago the educational system wasn't the same as it is now and
many aspects have changes in our education system. In the past years, teachers used
conventional methods to transfer information and knowledge to their students and the only
means they utilised was blackboards.

Furthermore, as far as I'm concerned, schoolmasters paid more attention to their student's
weaknesses, problems and needs and the bonds between them were stronger than nowadays.
Moving to the present, the existing ties between teachers and children have become more
impersonal and unfortunately many teachers willingly keep a distance from students in the
classroom. In addition, technological advances play a vital role in teaching and the methods used
before are now obsolete.

To conclude, in my opinion, I prefer the educational system as it was 10 years ago than it is now
because this isn't only the internet that makes someone literate, but teachers and strong bonding
between a teacher and a student do.
Q. What changes do you foresee in the next 50 years?
Answer: It seems to me that in the forthcoming future the changes will be tremendous. First of all,
it won't be necessary for teachers to be present in the classroom as everything is going to be
accomplished by the usage of technology. For example, students will become knowledgeable
about different matters from the comfort of their home and they will correspond with their tutors
rather than having personal relationships. Of course, it still happens these days to a certain
extent, but in the next 50 years, I believe that this will be the way of teaching exclusively. Going
further, I think that apart from some basic and necessary subjects such as literature and
mathematics, all of the other will be optional and each child will have the opportunity to choose
the subject they want to be taught even when at primary school. From my point of view, I cannot
say for sure if this is the appropriate course of action, but one thing is clear; if this happens the
disadvantages will be inevitable.
Q. How do the expectations of todays school leavers compare with those of the previous generation?
Answer: When someone completed school in the past, they just hoped to find a job in order to
earn a salary and cover their living expenses. Many, in the past, did not even look for jobs and
continued their family business. They didn't have as high expectations as present school leavers
have these days.
In many cases, nowadays school-leavers don't have realistic expectations and they expect a
high position with high income, even without professional experience. Furthermore, these days
knowledge isn't the only element required for a good job as skills, experience, passion about
work, learning, discipline and adaptability to name but a few, are prerequisites in order for
someone to enter the labour market. That, however, was not the case in the past.

Q. What role do you think extracurricular activities play in education?

Answer: It is commonly believed that extracurricular activities play an important role in education
and have many benefits both in personal and professional life. I quite agree with that as those
activities enhance someones capability and improve the way of thinking. First of all, children with
extracurricular activities learn how to collaborate and co-exist with other peers and learn about
soft skills and values. In addition, a great opportunity is provided to them to interrelate with others
and develop and evolve their interpersonal skills. Hence, these types of activities can create a
feeling of contribution, as children are involved in different things and this will lead them to boost
their self-esteem. Lastly, all these advantages will help children to build a well-rounded
personality and an exceptional character and will benefit the school and teachers by having well-
mannered and conscious students.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Practice Questions

1. Is it better to make important life decisions on your own or is it
better to consult other people?
2. Do you think good decision-making can be taught?

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Sample Answers and

Analysis
1. Is it better to make important life decisions on your own or is it
better to consult other people?

There are good reasons for both, I suppose. Ultimately, its

your life so I suppose you should make the decisions. On the
other hand, any decisions you make can affect other people so
it seems only right to discuss things with others first. Like
many philosophical questions, theres no simple answer, Im
afraid.

2. Do you think good decision-making can be taught?

Well, if you go to a bookstore youll see lots of self-help books

that claim to teach decision-making. Im not sure any of them
are effective though. I suppose it depends on the type of
decision you mean. If its a business strategy, then Im sure
some decisions are better than others and business schools
teach this. But if its a moral issue then Im not sure anyone
can claim to know the right decision, so how could anyone
teach it?

Using verbs of speculation such as suppose

Using you in the general sense to mean any person

3. Is watching TV a good way of forgetting about work or study?

Absolutely, yes. These days theres so much choice available

that we can completely immerse ourselves in entertainment. I
mean, you can turn on a good drama or comedy show and
pretty soon you forget about everything that happened that
day. I think that without TV wed all go a little crazy.

4. Should coworkers also spend their leisure time together?

Im completely against this. The problem with people going out

together after work is that they just gossip about certain
people in the office or factory, and this can hardly be a good
thing for the company, can it? Another thing is that theres
always the risk that you will say something you regret after a
few drinks and then you have to face your colleagues again the
next day. So, in short, I would definitely advise people to think
twice about socialising with colleagues.

5. Do you agree that English should be the main language of

international exchange?

Thats a very interesting question. Ive never really thought

about it before, actually. We all just assume that it should be
English, dont we? But what other languages could we use? I
suppose Chinese is becoming quite an important language, but
the pronunciation is too difficult for most people. English is
already the main language of universities and business, so
maybe it should stay that way.

6. What are the difficulties in creating a universal language?

Do you mean inventing a completely new language? Yes? Well, I

mean, er, its never been done before, has it? There was Latin,
of course, which was used by people all over Europe, but Im
not sure if it was really created for that purpose. Actually, I
think there used to be a universal language about a hundred
years ago. What was it called again, Esperanto? But that
disappeared quite quickly. Er, what Im trying to say is, I dont
think anyone has ever succeeded in creating a universal
language, so I doubt if it will ever be possible in the future.

Teachers Note
IELTS Speaking Part 3 topic: Humour.
1. What types of programmes do you find funny on TV?
Answer: Personally, I do not watch TV that much though once this has been a great source of
entertainment for me. On an average, I watch TV 5-10 hours in a week. I find reality TV shows,
comedy TV series and celebrity talk show quite funny and entertaining. TV series like How I met
your mother, and The big bang theory are very funny.
2. What types of programmes are most popular in your country? Why do you think this is
the case?
Answer: Talk shows, news, and TV series are very popular among the TV viewers in my country.
Based on a recent survey published online, talk shows and news analysis are rapidly gaining
popularity. I believe that watching the news is quite popular in the whole world. Its easy to watch,
provides updates around us, informs us about the current events and entertain us. Unlike other
programmes, we can start watching a news programme anytime and we do not need to pay a
great deal of attention to grab the information or the theme of it. Similarly, talk shows give us
insights of an event and let us know what experts have to say about an event. Sometimes people
with opposite opinions and views sit together and analyse something from their viewpoints.
Those sorts of programmes are both entertaining and informative and I guess this is the main
reasons people in my country watch these programmes more than other programmes.
3. What kind of things make you laugh? Why?
Answer: I guess this is a tough question to answer as I had to think really hard to come with an
answer to this question. I think a good sense of humour, a funny joke, a funny activity of a child, a
comedy movie, a serious attitude of a child, an activity or a pet or a funny childhood or
adolescent memory make me laugh. I love children, especially for their innocence. Sometimes
the acts like adults and this is an enjoyable thing for most of the people. A good movie that has a
funny storyline or funny characters makes me laugh as I seriously enjoy these types of movies. A
sense of humour, an enjoyable and funny joke is also very refreshing and helps me laugh for a
while.
4. Do you like to make people laugh? How?
Answer: Definitely, I love to make people laugh. But that does not mean that I act like a joker or
a clown or I try to make others laugh all the time. I sometimes tell a funny joke or story which
often make others laugh. Besides, I sometimes mimic someone and that makes my friends
laugh. For instance, we had a very funny neighbour and whenever I act like him in front of my
friends, they all find it very funny and they laugh quite loudly. I am not sure if I have an acute
sense of humour but I believe that this is an important quality to make others enjoy someones
company and laugh a lot with his story and way of presenting a story or event.
5. Do you think it is important to have a sense of humour?
Answer: As I have just said, a sense of humour is a great quality for anyone and it attracts
others to become friends with the person who has a great sense of humour. Having a sense of
humour is a great skill and this quality puts someone stands out of the crowd. A good sense of
humour also represents someones intelligence and wit.

IELTS Speaking Environmental Problems

Here is another sample answer for Part 3 of the IELTS Speaking Test on the topic of
Environmental Problems.

First we'll talk about global environmental problems

Tell me about some of the environmental problems that are affecting countries these
days?

Well, there are a lot at the moment. Although it has not been proven for sure, there is
a great deal of consensus about the fact that global warming is leading to severe
weather change and this is resulting in many problems. We are seeing a lot of
countries with the same problems that they have always had but on a much larger
scale. For example, in the United States there seem to be far more hurricanes and
tornadoes than in the past, with more devastating effects. There seems to constantly
be news of serious flooding in many countries from Asia to Europe. Forest fires also
seem to be getting worse, particularly each year in Australia.

Do you think that governments around the world are doing enough to tackle the
problems?

No, usually I don't think they are doing enough. There are countries that do what
they can do help their people when problems occur and they are trying to come up
with measures to mitigate the effects but when it comes to the major issue of global
warming countries are not doing enough. We see time and again that no agreement
can be made on how to reduce carbon footprints. This is usually because
governments know that to make a serious reduction in carbon dioxide emissions
they will have to sacrifice economic growth and they are not prepared to do this.
Governments think very short-term. They know that if there is economic decline, then
they will be voted out.

Why do some people not consider environmental problems to be serious?

I think there are several reasons for that. In some cases it is simply because people
are not affected on a day-to-day basis so it does not concern them. They just see it
on the news affecting other people. It does not mean they do not care but they will
soon forget about it. Also, some big organizations can be responsible for putting the
wrong information out. For example, oil companies have a vested interest in making
sure people do not believe in global warming as it could affect their profits, so they
play the issue down. Also, some people think as it is a long-term problem, they will
be dead by the time it will affect them so they think it is not important for them!

Now we'll look at environmental problems and disasters caused by

humans.
What do you consider to be the worlds worst environmental disaster caused by
humans?

I think that may be the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. In that case there was
an explosion and nuclear meltdown. It caused great loss of life. The environment
was badly affected and it is still affected today and could be for many years. There
are also many people who are still getting sick from the disaster and no one can live
anywhere near the site. Of course there are many other serious ones, some more
recent such as the oil spills in Africa and the US.

Why do you think environmental disasters caused by humans happen?

It could be for different reasons. In some cases it is simply because not enough care
is taken. Maybe procedures are not good enough. It could also be because the drive
for profit means that there is cost cutting and that again could mean that good
procedures are not in place. There is usually a situation when a disaster happens
where blame will be deflected and it is difficult to establish exactly who is
responsible. Nobody wants to admit responsibility because it means they will have to
pay compensation. Sometimes a disaster can happen because of a simple mistake
by someone.

Do you think there will be more environmental disasters caused by humans in the
future?

I don't think there will necessarily be more. Procedures are always getting tighter so
in theory there should be fewer, but mistakes will always happen so I'm sure they will
continue unfortunately. Governments must continue to prosecute any companies that
do cause environments problems or disasters so that they are less likely to happen
again.
