E-folio Assignment
Many times nurses are not recognized as leaders by patients and families. A lot of the
times patients do not see beyond an assessment, medication administration, or a dressing change,
what a nurse does to keep them safe and get well faster. When patients ask a nurse a question
about their treatment, care, or a medication they do not see or realize that a nurses explanation is
teaching and making sure the patient understands that teaching. The Essential II obtained from
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2008) describes what nursing leadership
is Basic nursing leadership includes an awareness of complex systems, and the impact of power,
politics, policy, and regulatory guidelines on these systems. (AACN, 2008, p. 13). A nurse does
far more behind the scenes using leadership skills than what the patients think they see. The Es-

the resources were limited. Sullivan (2013) states Leaders in todays health care environment
place increasing value on collaboration and teamwork in all aspects of organization. (p. 42).
LEADERSHIP IN NURSING 3

Reflection

strate a basic understanding of organizational structure, mission, vision, philosophy, and values.
(AACN, 2008, p. 14). The Creative Implementation Project helped to learn more about the health
care organizational structure, network with the nursing director and the nurse manager helped to
see the philosophy and values of the unit and the organization. This project helped to see beyond
the every day nursing tasks and understand that the skills such as critical decision making, care
coordination, delegation, and developing conflict resolution strategies are not just every day
