Leadership in Nursing Practice

E-folio Assignment

Frostburg State University

LEADERSHIP IN NURSING 2

Leadership in Nursing Practice

Many times nurses are not recognized as leaders by patients and families. A lot of the

times patients do not see beyond an assessment, medication administration, or a dressing change,

what a nurse does to keep them safe and get well faster. When patients ask a nurse a question

about their treatment, care, or a medication they do not see or realize that a nurses explanation is

teaching and making sure the patient understands that teaching. The Essential II obtained from

American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2008) describes what nursing leadership

is Basic nursing leadership includes an awareness of complex systems, and the impact of power,

politics, policy, and regulatory guidelines on these systems. (AACN, 2008, p. 13). A nurse does

far more behind the scenes using leadership skills than what the patients think they see. The Es-

sential II states a great example of the kind nursing leadership skills a nurse should have and

most nurses do have, Leadership skills are needed that emphasize ethical and critical decision-

making, initiating and maintaining effective working relationships, using mutually respectful

communication and collaboration within interprofessional teams, care coordination, delegation,

and developing conflict resolution strategies. (p. 13).

Exemplar

To complete the Creative Implementation Project some of the leadership skills described

in the Essential II such as initiating and maintaining effective working relationships were used.

(AACN, 2008, p. 13). The units nursing director and the nurse manager were able to clarify a

few questions for the project. Some of the questions could not be answered, thus, it showed that

the resources were limited. Sullivan (2013) states Leaders in todays health care environment

place increasing value on collaboration and teamwork in all aspects of organization. (p. 42).

Collaboration within the inter-professional teams is a part of the plan to help the organization to

progress forward.

Reflection

According to the Essential II the baccalaureate program prepares the graduate to demon-

strate a basic understanding of organizational structure, mission, vision, philosophy, and values.

(AACN, 2008, p. 14). The Creative Implementation Project helped to learn more about the health

care organizational structure, network with the nursing director and the nurse manager helped to

see the philosophy and values of the unit and the organization. This project helped to see beyond

the every day nursing tasks and understand that the skills such as critical decision making, care

coordination, delegation, and developing conflict resolution strategies are not just every day

nursing skills or tasks. These are the skills of leadership and accepting that these skills are a part

of leadership comes with time and experience.
