Module 03 Introduction

This module discusses microphone preamplifiers and their importance in audio recording. Microphonepreamplifiersareahottopicamongrecordingengineersandproducers.Thereis
currentlyafashiontobelievethatunlessyouhavetherightpreamplifier,yourrecordingwillbe
worthless.Thisisinsignificantcontrasttobroadcastsoundengineerswhousethepreamplifiersthat
arebuiltintowhatevermixingconsoletheyareworkingwith.Andbroadcastsoundengineeringis
probablythemostexactingofalloftheaudiodisciplines.

Wecansayforsurethatallofthemanufacturersofaudioequipmentinprofessionaluse
(professional,notjusthomestudio)knowhowtomakeamicrophonepreamplifierthatworks
verywellindeed,withnotechnical,sonicorartisticdrawbacks.However,itisalsoverytruetosay
thattherearesomemicrophonepreamplifiersthatsoundsubjectivelymorepleasingthanthosethat
aremerelyaccurate.

Thesuccessfulmusicproducerandsoundengineershouldrecognizethatitisperfectlyacceptableto
useanordinarymicrophonepreamplifier,ofprofessionalqualityofcourse.However,thereisalsoan
artofpaintingasonicpicturebyusingmicrophonepreamplifiersthatarelessthanperfect,
howevertheyhavedifferentshadesofsoundqualitythatfulfilavitalroleintheproducersand
engineersdailyroutine.

Theaudioexamplematerialwilldemonstratethedifferencesbetweencompetentmicrophone
preamplifiers,somethatareratherlessthancompetent,andpreamplifiersthatoffersubjective
benefitsratherthanpureandsimpleaccuracy

Thepracticalassignmentprojectofthismoduleisnotascloselylinkedtothemaintextasinother
modules.However,itisanimportantsteppingstoneintheprogressiontowardsfullcompetencein
soundengineeringskills.

Ifittakeslongerthanthenormalweeklyscheduletocompletethismoduleandyourpractical
assignmentproject,dontworry.Itisbettertodoeverythingtothebestofyourabilityratherthan
rush,evenintheslightest.
