Opnet Tutorial

OPNET is a discrete event simulator originally developed at MIT and now maintained by OPNET Inc. It allows for hierarchical modeling at the network, node, and process layers. The process layer uses finite state machines and C code to model protocol behavior. OPNET provides pre-built process models for common protocols and capabilities for animation, analysis, debugging. The IT Guru version focuses only on the network layer. The document provides instructions for obtaining the OPNET Academic Edition software and going through introductory tutorials to familiarize with the simulation tool. It also announces that the first assignment will be the Ethernet lab from the manual.

Introduction and Tutorials Network, Node, and Process Layer modeling
At Process Layer, a finite state machine representation is
Demonstration (Ethernet Lab) used for modeling, where state behavior is dictated by C
code
Canned process models are supplied (open code) for
many popular communication protocols
Decent capabilities for animation, GUI, analysis,
debugging, etc.
OPNET IT Guru: Deals with only Network Layer; other
layers are pre-canned and invisible
