Programs in Postgraduate Psychology

Master of Psychology (Clinical)
Master of Psychology (Health)
Master of Psychology (Organisational & Human Factors)
Master of Psychology - Aims
To provide graduates with the tertiary-level
education required to be eligible for general
registration as a Psychologist, subsequent
endorsement as a Clinical, Health, or Organisational
Psychologist and eligibility for membership of the
Australian Psychological Societys (APS) Colleges of
Clinical, Health, or Organisational Psychologists.

To provide thorough theoretical and clinical skills

preparation in core areas to meet formal requirements
for entry to the profession of psychology (as determined
by its accrediting bodies).

University of Adelaide 2
Doing a course or joining a profession?
On enrolment, trainees must apply for and be granted AHPRA
Registration as Provisional Psychologists, thus joining the
profession of psychology. Cost: $431
AHPRA requires trainees to maintain this provisional
registration, renewing it annually, throughout their
involvement in the program.

In 2 years (FTE) trainees make the transition from students to

fully registered Psychologists

Subsequently, after completing a 2-year supervised Registrar

program they may become endorsed Clinical, Health or
Organisational psychologists, potentially eligible for APS
College membership.

University of Adelaide 3
Doing a course or joining a profession?
What is a profession? An occupation that regulates
itself through systematic, required training and
collegial discipline; that has a base in technical,
specialised knowledge; and that has a service rather
than a profit orientation enshrined in its code of ethics
(Starr, 1984).

Registered professionals have more rights and more

responsibilities than employees do, therefore their
training is more rigorous.

University of Adelaide 4
Doing a course or joining a profession?
Registration and professional transition explain some of
the differences between this and other degrees..
nationally-accredited and specified curriculum
heavy workload
compulsory attendance requirements
supervised placements
student code of conduct
training in professional practice and ethics,
police check
mandatory notification training

University of Adelaide 5
Program Components

All Masters
Coursework (44%) in 7 courses
Placements: at least 1000 hours of unpaid supervised practice
(31%) in 3 or more settings
Masters Research Project (25%) or relevant PhD Thesis
These components meet APAC and College accreditation
criteria
Masters graduates gain registration to practise (general
registration) and eligibility for the basic Medicare rebate (if in
private practice)
Following graduation, if they complete the required hours of
work, supervision and CPD, they can become eligible for
endorsement in specialist areas with the PBA and for APS
college membership

University of Adelaide 6
When would I start?
How about holidays?
The full-time program commences in mid-January of the first
year of study, with two intensive summer courses.
We try to stagger assignment deadlines, but the first semester
of the first year is particularly busy because of students need
to complete all prerequisite topics before commencing their
placements.
The program is very demanding, and some coursework,
practical placement and research requirements are
undertaken outside the Semesters, during periods regarded as
vacations for undergraduate students.
Students cannot expect to take more than 4 weeks of leave per
year, and the timing of this must be negotiated, depending on
placements and research commitments.

University of Adelaide 7
What are the attendance requirements?
Full-time students must be available from 9am to 5pm,
Monday to Friday (and part-time students for the half-time
equivalent).
Students must arrange any other commitments to fit in with
scheduled courses, research and placements and travel to
placement venues. Thus, opportunities for paid work are
limited.
All curriculum material is essential to the students
preparation for professional practice and the Psychological
Board of Australia regards course attendance as part of the
legal requirement for 2 years supervised practice leading to
registration as a psychologist.
Therefore, class attendance is compulsory.

University of Adelaide 8
FAQS: How do you select students for the
program?
We receive a large number of excellent applications.
Places are limited by placement options. Selection is
therefore based on:
Academic results - primarily Honours Grade:
interview offers are made in academic grade order
Referee reports
Structured face-to-face interview
This assesses applicants knowledge of, suitability for, and
commitment to, the training program and a subsequent career as a
clinical psychologist. It can include role-plays, ethical dilemmas and
hypothetical professional scenarios.

University of Adelaide 9
Can I get credit for my previous work/
study/ research?
APAC, AHPRA and APS colleges emphasize the value of
concurrent study, research and practice, for professional
training.
Accordingly they permitted very little credit for previous
experience or learning.
- Some credit for similar Masters coursework, none
for research, limited for placements.
For more information, see the APAC and APS College
guidelines.

- APS colleges also on APAC website

University of Adelaide 10
The Application Process
Applications need to be submitted through SATAC
(http://www.satac.edu.au) No late applications will be accepted.
Once you have completed your application through SATAC you will then
be directed to our Faculty webpage to complete further
information regarding referees, work experience and other comments.
This year the Heads of Departments and Schools of Psychology
Association (HoDSPA) will be administering the referee
process. Applicants will need to pay a $20 fee to use the system and
the link to the HoDSPA site will be provided in the online application,
once you have completed your SATAC application.
Once you have provided your referee details to HoDSPA, the referees
will need to submit their reports to them and they will then be sent
on to the School. The deadline for referee reports is the 30th October,
2016, without these we cannot accept your application.
If you are currently enrolled at the University of Adelaide as an
international student you will need to complete the Change of
Program application at www.international.adelaide.edu.au as well as
the application on the Schools website.

University of Adelaide 11
English Language Requirement
All students must be provisionally registered before
commencing a Masters program therefore we need to ensure
that applicants meet the Psychology Board of Australias
English language standards.
This means that if you did not complete at least 2 years of your
secondary education in English in Australia, Canada, New
Zealand Ireland, South Africa, UK or USA, you need to
provide IELTS results with your application.
The standard required is IELTS academic level 7 in all
components.
For more information see the Australian Health Practitioner
Regulation Agency Standard for English language skills (July 1
2015).

I had been working as a professional coach for a
number of years before hearing about the Health
Masters course and knew right then it was for me!
I'd always had more of an interest in health
psychology than clinical and I find the mind-body
connection fascinating. Having completed the
degree over 3 years, finding the course
material relevant and engaging, and getting
to research into my area of interest, I know I
chose the right professional path for me.

I have integrated my private psychology practice into

my business and I provide a range of coaching and
psychology services, both for private clients and
within the corporate environment. I also run
workshops and teach courses as well, which allows
me to pass on my knowledge and experience to
others.

I highly recommend this course for anyone

with an interest in health - it truly gives you
great career options and the practical
experience to hit the ground running.

My area of interest is in refugee mental health. Within the Master
of Psychology (Health) program I was given the opportunity to
undertake two placements in this area, one at DASSA (health
promotion) and the other at the Migrant Health Service. Within
these I was able to work to effectively engage individuals from
CALD backgrounds to mental health services and gain experience
working with both psychological and health problems of refugee
and asylum seekers newly arrived to Australia. Along with the
migrant experience comes severe chronic pain and chronic illness
due predominantly to stress, poor diet and manual labour. I feel
that studying to become a health psychologist has been extremely
beneficial in preparing me to work with this complex group of
individuals and engage in work I am passionate about.
