Figures that speak for themselves

People grow with the challenges they face a company grows with the people close to it.
These are the people in our company with their commitment, their ideas, their specialist
expertise, but also with their enjoyment of their work that stand behind our success. A
success that can't be ignored. Our consistent investment in R & D and intensification of
our responsible and partner-based customer relations bore fruit and made 2005 the most
successful financial year in the 35-year history of the company. It was possible to extend
our market leadership in the field of wind power and also considerably increase sales in the
industrial sector. And our success story continues.

Competitive beyond measure.
Inspired beyond bounds.
A considerable element of the Bachmann electronic philosophy is the central idea behind
all products and systems: only what is useful to our customers is ultimately of use to us.
All components are therefore designed to make your machine more efficient, requiring
less maintenance and faster to configure. In other words, more competitive. Technology
for its own sake doesn't fit in our portfolio. However, technology to increase productivity
can be found in abundance at Bachmann electronic.
Products and systems that define new limits.
And surpass many entirely.
Our own and those of our customers.

Gabriel Schwanzer

16
No limits. No restrictions.

The development and supply of innovative controllers for demanding automation tasks has
been the substance and uncompromising statement of our company since it was founded
in 1970. Our development criteria are clear: absolute stability, deterministic real-time
performance in all conditions and total compatibility with future expansions.

17
Always open to winds of change.
Having been active in the wind power sector since 1999 weve done more than just kicked up
some dust. Within a short space of time Bachmann electronic automation solutions became the
industry standard. Our control components won a reputation for their versatility and we became
market leaders. Bachmann electronic typically offers standard and proven modules which can also
be used freely for this demanding application field.
Fresh wind in visualization.

20
Fresh wind in visualization.

Object-oriented, graphically open and flexible.

The visualization software combines the requirements of high-tech visualizations for

displaying complex processes with the possibility of simple and clearly designed operating
features. For example, MVIS provides a collection of libraries, control elements and
controller tasks for generating visualization programs (Scada/HMI).
Java provides the OEM/system integrator with a complete and state-of-the-art, object-
oriented and platform-independent high-level language directly on the M1 automation
system for programming the controller applications. Bachmann electronic has also
implemented its own fully real-time capable Java Virtual Machine that allows highly
deterministic program processing as well as the parallel processing of tasks. Consistent
object orientation reduces the time required for the initial implementation and for
modifications.

Fresh wind in program creation.

M1 and MATLAB/Simulink

The full integration of the M1 controller family and the modelling and simulation tool
MATLAB/Simulink enables controller parameters to be transferred directly to the control
technology. Tedious and time consuming intermediate steps in programming through this
previously unique integration become a thing of the past. Thanks to the direct integration
in the M1 system family, the closed-loop control engineer no longer has to be familiar with
programming the PLC in IEC 61131 or C /C++ languages but can work in the usual model
and simulation environment MATLAB/Simulink. The different input and output modules
of the M1 controller are provided in a module library in Simulink and can be integrated
directly in the graphical modelling process. Values, regulators or module parameters can
be adjusted directly online.

Fresh wind in real-time communication.

Real-time Ethernet. A network from the office to the IO channel.

All processor modules of the M1 automation system can be networked via Ethernet,
providing the basis of seamless networking and Internet capability for the entire system.
The implementation of PROFINET IO on the processors of the MPC200 and MX200 series, the
web terminals and control terminals (HMI-PLC) as well as the PROFINET-enabled Switch
SWI205 means that the M1 user can now access via web technology both the installation
as well as remote I/Os or drives with the usual standard Ethernet infrastructure simply
and seamlessly. This is made possible thanks to PROFINET's ability to utilize both real-
time and conventional protocols simultaneously on the Ethernet medium. Bachmann's
high performance CPUs can be run both as a PROFINET Controller (comparable to a
fieldbus master) and as a PROFINET Device (comparable to fieldbus slave). This enables
homogeneous operation within a Bachmann electronic automation system, whilst still
ensuring complete openness for integrating the PROFINET network components of any
manufacturer.

Wake up. The future is beginning.
Technically speaking Bachmann components are virtually indestructible. They pass
all tests with flying colors, meet all criteria easily and also prove this daily worldwide.
This is also true in terms of finances. Resilience here is demonstrated, for example, by
the open system architecture and the flexible interfaces. Unlimited security for the future
therefore comes virtually built-in.
Experience has shown that 80 % of all malfunctions occur in the first 24
hours. Why should we let this be the responsibility of our customers?

Gabriel Schwanzer

26
Extra Percentage Points for Stability.
Bachmann Quality.

Our components meet the highest industrial standards in terms of performance, availability
and product life. They are the result of innovative development, perfect production and
continuously improved processes.

From product design to delivery, we consistently aim for a high level of quality in our
services and products. The production process from raw materials to final testing is fully
documented.

Failures are impermissible 99.97 percent availability

Extensive tests that meet standards far exceeding the legal minimum requirements and
targeted temperature and performance testing of modules close to their limits ensure the
product quality of all Bachmann electronic systems. In the wind sector we have shown
over long-term use with large series that our controllers can achieve availability of 99.97
percent.

Maximum EMC performance and high temperature resistance

Maximum EMC performance is ensured thanks to standards compliant measurements in

our in-house 3-meter absorber chamber. As part of our extensive quality controls for the
M1 automation system, the modules also undergo a 100 percent test in an active RUN-IN
prior to delivery. The test objects are run at the limit temperatures in climatic chambers
over several days and monitored individually during temperature changes from -40C to
+60C.

Visualization and controller hardware

Tailored automation solutions with built-in expansion capability are today

an important requirement for financial success in machine and system
building. In terms of compactness and costs, Bachmann's control terminals
CT offer outstanding features. Controller and visualization rolled into one
unit, an HMI-PLC device. Programming and diagnostics can be carried out
on the control terminal with exactly the same tools used by the M1 (M-
BASE,
M-Manager, M-PLC, ). Parallel programming in IEC 61131, C, C++
and Java is also possible. The control terminal is ideal for use where
remote intelligence is required in an automation solution in addition to
visualization. I/O components can be integrated as easily as usual via
Ethernet or CAN.

MPE200 series

The latest member of the processor families

for the M1 automation system from Bachmann
electronic is an extension of the successful high-
performance CPUs of the MPC200 series: the
MPE200 series also allows the installation of the
externally routed local PCI (Peripheral Component
Interconnect) bus. An appropriate design allows
cards to be fitted easily (M20 system) for the fast
connection of communication and bus systems,
memory systems, digital video interfaces (DVI),
etc.

Future interfaces which have to operate at

fast data rates (e.g. Pronet IO IRT) can be
integrated optimally via PCI. The provision of

Especially for sophisticated motion control

applications the ISI222 module offers compact
equipment and highest precision. Various
encoder interfaces for position acquisition,
analog outputs for admission of the control
variables as well as digital inputs for zero
initiator or trigger for the complete operation
of two motion axes are directly integrated.

Furthermore, due to the central communication

concept, all I/Os of the remaining M1 system
can also be incorporated into the motion
control (limit switches, etc.). Acquisition of
position and speed as well as interrupt-capable
handling of trigger and zero-track information
offer optimum convenience and best possible
positioning results to application programs and
SW controller modules. Input frequencies up
to 8 MHz and the integrated synchronization
(IO-Bus-Sync) to the overall system allow
highly dynamic and precise movements.

Beside the full compatibility to the well

proven controller modules M-SMC, M-CNC
and M-Shaft, also own user programs and
individually designed control tasks can utilize
the comprehensive implemented functions of the
module just via the known standard interfaces
(SVI, MIO). The extensive integrated error
observation with ongoing check of the encoder
resolution unfolds hard-to-see wiring or ESD
problems and allows the application especially
under difficult environmental conditions.

Bus Extension Modules

BEx2xx/x

With the bus extension modules BEM21x and

BES21x a high speed connection up to 3m
away is possible with less than 1.5 sec access
time to remote IO units. Up to six substations,
which may be distributed between different
switching cabinets, can be connected together
in a daisy-chain topology. Each substation can
in turn handle up to 15 M1 standard modules.
Easy wiring using RJ45 connectors is
another advantage of this new technology.
Wiring becomes far simpler.

No special protocol is needed to use IOs with

bus extension. The user can access these
modules directly, as if they were local. The bus
connection assembly BES21x, with integral
24 V power unit supplies the sub-stations.

Bus Module DeviceNet Master

DNM201

The DNM201 fieldbus master module allows

the M1 controller to be used as bus master in
DeviceNet networks. The DNM201 module is
used to connect drives and I/O interfaces. The
system bus of an M1 supports up to 8 separate
networks each with a maximum of 64 nodes
that can be operated at different cycle times.
The bus architecture thus enables up to 512
DeviceNet stations (nodes) to be controlled
individually. The DNM201 module supports all
standard baud rates (125 / 250 / 500 Kbit/s).

The DeviceNet master also carries out the

data exchange between master and slaves
independently. The process data transferred
in this way is thus made available in a defined
memory range (DP-RAM). The structure
and semantics of the data contained can be
configured as required by the application.
In order to keep the configuration simple
and transparent for the user, the internal
structure of the DeviceNet master is largely
based on the DeviceNet Software Model.

It also controls all slaves in a network that

are assigned to it by the configuration. In
other words, the DeviceNet master can
detect failed slave modules and pursue fault
strategies such as the searching for nodes
via the Offline Connection Set, indication
to the application (PLC) and/or automatic
resumption of communication after a failure.

Field of Application

The DeviceNet Master can be implemented everywhere, where DeviceNet functionality according
to the ODVA specification (www.odva.org) is required. In this case, the functionality is freely
scaleable. It is possible that the DeviceNet Master in a network simultaneously acts as master
and as slave or only as slave. The DNM201 masters COS communication (Change of State) and
can also operate solely as Explicit Message Client (e.g. for applications, where no process data
must be transferred or only parameters in devices need to be changed, e.g. an HMI).

Module DA3284-C
The CAN bus compact module DA3284-C
offers an outstanding compact design and a
sophisticated mix of possible signal types. As
a stand-alone fieldbus module (CANopen) it
offers the complete I/O range already integrated
for small applications or decentralized signal
termination point. It is the ideal addition to
the known family of CAN digital modules and
is an optimum All-In-One peripheral for small
applications, such as those based on the control
terminals CT300 / CT200 of Bachmann electronic.
The combined DA3284-C digital and analog
module unites all the relevant signal types
with large channel numbers in one device for
greater future security. The channel-specific
programmable mode (on/off or applied standard
signal) enables the unit to be adapted ideally
to a wide range of applications without any
interface converter. As well as the robust design
and processing quality, its outstanding technical
specifications, seldom available from the usual
fieldbus peripherals, are highly impressive.

Power Supply Module NT255

With the NT255 Bachmann electronic sets new

standards for power supplies for CPUs and
backplane-supplied modules. As a result of
intensive development work and in consideration
of field experiences with several thousand
supply modules, the NT255 combines long
term knowledge and latest technologies.

Best possible selected components and lifetime

optimized design form the reliable base for the
module. Recent planar transformer technologies
ensure a significantly increased efficiency; the
integrated heat dissipation in the circuit board
(coolPCB-technology) prevents even smallest
local warming and therewith early ageing of
components. Moreover, because of the extremely
reduced weight of the parts, the module is even
more robust against shock and vibrations.

In spite of the primary design focus of lifetime

and robustness the NT255 also inspires with
technical facts: up to 80% longer buffer
time at short voltage drops and amply power
reserves (55W peak power) for temporary
overload ensure secureness in every respect.

M-Target for Simulink

Rapid development of closed-loop controls

and sequential controllers

The software package MATLAB and the

corresponding toolbox Simulink of Mathworks
Inc. is known worldwide as a standard for
simulation of dynamical systems in technologically
sophisticated processes.

With the full integration of the M1 controller

as target system, comfortable and efficient
implementation of the MATLAB functions onto a
M1 controller system becomes possible.
The user can solely concentrate on his work in
the familiar graphical Simulink programming
environment, clearly design the system there as a
whole and simulate the effect of changes already
before download onto an M1 controller system.
Generation of the code for the M1 target system
is performed automatically in the background
and does not require any knowledge of another
programming language. This total integration
allows efficient programming and setting-up of the
M1 controller system.

F aster implementation by shorter control-design

phases
Shorter initial setup time by reliable automatic
code generation
Increased conformity between machine and
controller model

Already existing MATLAB/Simulink subsystems

can be reused in new simulations. The integration
of Bachmann ready to use software modules
facilitates the development of complex customer-
specific software. The unique and instantaneous
interaction between process model, PLC model
and closed loop controller model supports a more
stable simulation of the overall process.
The transfer of the control program onto the
M1 system is carried out automatically from the
MATLAB/Simulink environment. Parameter
variations in the model are implemented online
into the M1 target system. Sequential programs
can be implemented by the optional toolboxes
Stateflow and Coder. By the use of M-Target for
Simulink, the worlds of machine simulation and
automation engineering are moving a little closer
together.

Fresh Wind for the Energy Sector References

Wind Energy Plants

The operation of modern wind energy plants poses high demands to the
automation technology. Bachmann electronic is offering an optimal solution
for the complex tasks of the sector with its open and modularly designed M1
platform.

With increasing power the complexity of the equipment is also rising, and
further tasks in the field of data processing, measurement technique and
regulation add to pure control tasks. The original programmable logic
controller must become a process computer that partially performs control
tasks. One of these tasks is, for example, to quickly and smoothly adapt
the position of the rotor blade to the wind conditions and - in full-load
operation - to the power requirements of the electric power companies. In
a parallel way the environmental conditions, temperatures and hydraulic
values, rotational speeds and oscillations are monitored in order to be able
to quickly respond to critical values, if necessary.

Apart from its real-time capability the M1 system is also marked by an

innovative networking concept. Bachmann electronic has developed its
own FAST-bus, which guarantees, on the one hand, the decentralization of
components in real-time on the basis of fiber optic cables, and on the other
hand, maximum interference stability and transmission distances of 150
meters for each substation.

Standard field bus systems like, for example, CANopen, DeviceNet or

Profibus can also be used. An integrated Ethernet interface serves the
purpose of communicating with a super-ordinate wind-energy plant main
computer and allows remote diagnosis and maintenance.

Total Competence for Filling and Locking Machines

Filling Plants

The most important at a filling plant is that it fills the cash at the end; on a
long-term basis and under all circumstances.

Our strength are filling and locking machines for cups made of plastic,
paper, aluminum and group materials. All machines proportion with excellent
weight accuracies and fill liquid to pasty food also with hard portions. The
machines of course correspond to the newest European Union standards.
Most modern servo-drive technology, field bus technology and user friendly
prompting are the current highlights, which prove the competence of the
enterprise with filling and locking machines.

Perfect dosing precision:

1/10 g more product per cup filling means approximately 7 t product loss
per year at 300 cups/minute output in 2 shift operation!

Future proof solution from a single cast References

Die-casting Machines

The Oskar Frech GmbH + Co. of Schorndorf has had

a good experience with the M1 automation system by
Bachmann Electronic regarding their cold-chamber
die-casting machines. This is the reason why the world's first fully electronic
hot-chamber die-casting machine DAW 80 E is now being equipped with
Bachmanns powerful PC-control, which can be networked in a most versa-
tile way and provides the highest accuracy and speed. A fast I/O-bus, the
possibility of decentralization and the connection to the Ethernet also proved
to be some of the criteria for the decision-taking process in the Swabian
company - in addition to already present interfaces to automation devices
and peripherals such as the spraying equipment, which should be able to be
accessed by the customers in a trouble-free manner. Moreover, the Ether-
net connects the machine control to the visualization unit also developed
by Bachmann electronic on the basis of an industrial PC. The software for
this product was developed in the R&D department of Frech. The developers
used Visual Basic to design the user interface. In the meantime the Frech
group has abandoned the development of a control of its own, for they have
found a powerful control with the M1 automation system, which fulfills pres-
ent needs in an excellent way and can also be extended for the future.

221
Real-time processing for Chip-Test

IC Test Handling Robots

Ordinary PLC solutions are reaching the limits of

their performance as a result of the absolute real-
time requirements of handling robots for performing
electrical tests of semiconductor chips. With its new Integrated Strip
Testing System (InStrip) and other IC-test handling robots the Multitest
elektronische Systeme GmbH of Rosenheim relies on the M1 control by
Bachmann electronic. The response times for the collection of measured
values are in the range of 0.5 to 5 milliseconds.

With a list of various criteria - beside high performance and real-

time capability, a powerful bus system, system transparency, remote
maintenance via modem, the availability of complex controllers and easy
configuration were crucial criteria - the company in Rosenheim made a
decision in favor of an external control system for the first time and did not
use a development of its own.

Today the high-speed control M1 by Bachmann electronic provides for the

processing of all control and regulation tasks in the InStrip equipment
in absolute real-time. The possibility of connecting the M1 control to
the network through the Ethernet 10BaseT interface has been of great
importance to Multitest. It permits to connect the control to the visualization
PC and other computers and to integrate the control into the intranet
/ internet through a modem or ISDN-router. In this way data can be
exchanged among any devices in the world, which permits to service the
control from any point on the earth.

Maximum transparency and flexibility References

Plastics processing industry

The company soplar s.a. is one of the worldwide leading manufacturers

of blow molding and stretch blow molding machines for the production of
plastic containers of all kind. High availability of the plants, especially for the
production of packaging for the food industry, is of vital importance.

Due to sophisticated remote maintenance concepts, about 80% of all

interventions on a machine are handled from the head office in Switzerland.
With plant locations not only all over Europe, but also in America and Asia,
this became not only a cost reducing factor, but virtually revolutionized the
maintenance of packaging plants.
For many years already, the company, located in Altsttten / Switzerland,
has been counting on the automation technology of Bachmann electronic.
Not only the reliability, but particularly the open platform of the M1 controller
system which allows fast adaptations on the plant, and the consistent
networkability of the M1, has convinced the soplar s.a. company.

223
Measurable success in control and visualization

Laboratory Technology

Thermo Fisher Scientific (Materials & Minerals), with factories in Erlangen

(Germany) and Gloucester (UK), is part of the Process Instruments Division
of the Thermo Fisher Scientific, that has an annual turnover of more than
$ 2.7 billion with approximately 11.000 employees in 30 countries. Thermo
Fisher Scientific (Materials & Minerals) has been producing radiometric
thickness and coating weight gauges and process controls for industrial use
since 1949.

For more than 5 years, the company has been using the Bachmann M1
automation system in its measurement systems for measurement value
logging, data pre-processing and sequence control. The impressive
performance of the M1 system, with its large network capacity and the
customized development of a precision input and output card for analog
signals, were decisive factors in the switch to the Austrian manufacturer.

224
Flexible soldering in record time References

Soldering Machines

With selective soldering machines, which are chiefly

used in companies that have to organize their
soldering processes in a reproducible manner, real-time
processing of the data for the axis drive is an absolute must. Therefore, the
market leader ERSA GmbH of Wertheim relies on the M1 automation system
by Bachmann electronic. Now the M1 control does not only provide for the
control of the selective soldering machines in the medium-sized company,
but also for the complete axis and temperature control. In addition to
real-time processing the high flexibility of the M1 system as a result of its
modular design, the comprehensive services and the broad range of add-
ons - for example, for visualizing purposes - have turned the balance in
favor of the solution by Bachmann electronic.

225
M1 controller picks up the pace

Test Stands (Automotive)

In their tailored test stands for the automotive industry

the EDAG Engineering + Design AG of Herne relies on
the M1 by the automation expert Bachmann electronic.
It permits to flexibly collect measurement and test data in real-time.

The results of their work is used by almost everyone, but their activities
are mostly hidden from view: The engineers of the EDAG Engineering +
Design AG with their headquarters in the Hessian Fulda do not only develop
vehicles for the leading car manufacturers in this world, but plan and design
the necessary production system up to the installation and start-up of the
equipment.

Together with the robust real-time multi-tasking operating system VxWorks

by WindRiver Systems the Intel processor in the M1 control provides high
reliability, extremely high performance and excellent real-time response.
Moreover, the PC-based system is marked by an innovative networking
concept. For this purpose Bachmann electronic has developed its own FAST-
bus, which enables the CPU to access the I/O modules in absolute real-time.

In the test system two M1 controls are employed in each functional unit,
of which one specifically provides for the pure test stand automation,
measurement and regulation tasks, while the resources of the other one are
allocated to the respective test-piece in the sense of an open system.

226
Highest Quality in Chip-Card Production References

SmartCard Automation

We had to choose between approximately 50

controller manufacturers, but finally the Bachmann
concept convinced us, so the electronics manager of
the company. Above all the almost complete covering of the requirement
catalog was the decisive factor. The M1 controller does not only fulfill all
requirements regarding performance, modularity and equipment, but
above all it has an innovative cross-linking concept. Besides the FAST-Bus
developed by Bachmann electronic, standard fieldbus systems like CANopen
can be used in the M1 controller for less time-critical tasks. However the
response times will then be in the range of milliseconds.

A further possibility for cross-linking is the Ethernet 10BaseT interface of

the M1 controller. Apart from the coupling to the visualization PC it also
offers the possibility of the integration into an Intranet/Internet for a world-
wide data exchange with arbitrary other devices. Thus the control can be
maintained from each point of the world.

227
Impressive High Speed Control

Transfer Presses

In a pilot project for the automotive components

supplier ZF Sachs the Schuler Hydrap GmbH + Co. KG
is applying a new control system in a production line for the first time. The
high-speed-controller M1 by Bachmann electronic provides for the processing
of all control and regulation tasks in the hydraulic transfer press equipment
in real-time. The response times for the collection of measured values in the
equipment are in the range of 0.5 to 5 milliseconds. With a list of 60 criteria
- including performance, easy installation, comfortable configuration and
modularity of the hardware - the equipment manufacturer decided for the
M1 controller as a suitable controller system. A special feature of the now
employed M1 system is parallel task processing: control and regulation tasks
are separated and processed in a parallel way. The control tasks include all
conventional functions of the machine like automation tasks, the control of
power units, die clamps and slide locks, and other auxiliary functions.

The device can be connected to the visualization PC through the Ethernet

10BaseT interface of the M1 controller or integrated into the intranet /
internet for world-wide data-exchange with any other devices. By doing
this, the control can be maintained from any point on the earth. Through
a full remote service Schuler-Hydrap is able to access each control and
visualization. At the same time, it is possible to view the event history in
order to quickly spot possible errors.

Tablet Presses

The real-time processing of measured data generated

during the pressing process is one of the essential
requirements of modern tablet presses, which produce a new tablet every
five milliseconds on average. The Kilian GmbH & Co. KG of Cologne, a part
of the Italian IMA group, has built on the M1 control system for their most
diversified products since 2000. If the measurements of the pressing forces
exceed the specified tolerance limit, an automatic readjustment of the
product quantity will be made in the matrix of the press. At the same time,
the tablet that does not meet the rigid quality requirements is removed in
time and does not become involved in the production circle. In the most
extreme case - with considerable deviations or a high variation of measured
values - the machine can also be stopped automatically. Together with the
real-time data-processing and the innovative networking concept of the M1
control, the high flexibility, the modular design and the integrated remote
maintenance concept turned the balance in favor of Bachmann electronic.

Water Industry

Whenever reliability and availability are the primary

requirements for automation systems, Bachmann elec-
tronic solutions are in demand.
This is also the case at the Rittmeyer AG in Zug / Switzerland, one of
Europes leading suppliers of measuring and control systems for the water
and energy industry.
For their automation system RIFLEX, Rittmeyer AG solely counts on the
Bachmann M1 controller and particularly esteems the functionality of the M1
with regard to remote diagnostics and maintenance since the systems are
often installed in remote and difficult to access stations.

Beside the comprehensive networkability, the large range scalability,

flexibility and the compactness of the M1 system were the decisive factors
for choosing the Bachmann electronic solution.

Rolling Mill Technology

Achenbach Buschhtten is quasi synonym for high

technology and quality in building rolling mills. The
main focus of the company is on the perfect integration
of mechanics, hydraulics and control engineering with the objective to
achieve maximum productivity of their rolling mills. Achenbach is the
worlds leading specialist for aluminium light gauge strip and foil rolling mills
which can produce aluminium foils of more than 2 meter strip width and a
minimum strip thickness of 6m, thus more than 10 times thinner than a
human hair.

If the machines work in the so-called position controlling, tons-heavy rolls

have to be highly dynamically controlled and positioned with an accuracy
of 1 m, thereby transporting the foil with a highway speed of 130 km/h
through the rolls.

For three years already, Achenbach has been counting on the M1

automation system of Bachmann electronic for the control engineering
of their plants. Beside the excellence performance, Achenbach has been
particularly convinced by the reliability and the long-term availability of the
M1.
