Lab #1 -Basic Construction and Editing

Part 1: Basic 2-D Construction

In this exercise basic construction and edit commands will be learned including: creating
lines, circles, arcs, and basic dimensioning to create the drawing shown below:

1. Start with a new AutoCAD drawing by selecting the Qnew command icon in the
Standard toolbar. The Select Template dialog box will appear.

.
In the Select Template manager, on the triangular button to the right of the Open button
left-mouse-click, and select Open with no Template Imperial. This sets default units
to inches.
3. In the Draw toolbar select the Line command icon.

4. AutoCAD prompts to identify the starting point of

the line in the command prompt area near the bottom
of the screen,.
Command: _line Specify the first point:0,0 [ENTER]
(Press the [ENTER] key).

5. Enter the absolute coordinates of the second point to

create the bottom horizontal line.
Specify next point : 6.5,0 [ENTER]

6. Enter the absolute coordinates of the next point to create the right vertical line.
Specify next point or [Undo]: 6.5,3.5 [ENTER]

7. To create the upper, right feature, use the relative coordinates by typing the symbol @
preceding the coordinates relative to the previous point.
Specify next point or [Undo]: @-1.5,1 [ENTER]

8. Type the following relative coordinates for the next point

Specify next point or [Undo]: @-4,0 [ENTER]

9. To create the upper, left feature, use the relativepolarcoordinates using the @ symbol
for relative coordinates preceding the distance, and the < symbol preceding the angle.
Specify next point : @1<270 Specify next
point : @1<180

10. Finish the outline of the drawing by typing the coordinates of the starting point
Specify next point : 0,0

11. To create the circle of diameter

2.0 select the Zoom Window
command icon from the Standard
Toolbar

12. Left-mouse-click on one corner of the

window when prompted to create a
window around the drawing,
Specify corner of window,
Specify first corner:[ -1.5,-1.5] and next
as:[7.5,5.5]
13. Left-mouse-click the opposite corner of the window when prompted.

14. Select the Circle command icon in the Draw toolbar to create the circle of
diameter 2.0

15. Enter the absolute coordinates of the center of the circle.

Specify center for circle : 3,1.5 [ENTER]

16. Enter the radius of circle in the command prompt area

Specify radius of circle: 1 [ENTER]

17. By right-mouse-click popup option menu

would be displayed inside the drawing area.

18. To repeat the previous command, select Repeat

Center with the left-mouse-button in the popup
menu.

19. Enter 3, 1.5 coordinates of center of circle , and

1.0 as its diameter.
Now create another circle by selecting circle in
toolbar coordinates 4.5,3 and radius 5.

Using AutoCADs many dimension commands we can add next dimensions of

features in the drawing.

20. Change the default accuracy of dimensions before adding dimensions. We can also
change other dimension settings such as text, arrows, and dimension line properties.
In the pull-down menus, select:
21. The Dimension Style Manager dialog box appears on the screen.

22. To bring up the Modify Dimension Style dialog box, click on Modify

23. Click on the Primary Units tab.

24. To set the default accuracy of

the dimensions to be
displayed to one decimal
place, select Precision 0.0.
All dimensions added from
this point on will be
displayed with this accuracy.

25. To accept the settings and

close the dialog box Click
on the OK button

26. To close the Dimension

Style Manager Dialog box
click on the CLOSE button

27. Be sure the Dimension toolbar is displayed. Move the cursor to the Standard toolbar
area, if the Dimension toolbar is not displayed and to display a list of toolbar menu
groups right-click an empty area in between two icons. To display the Dimension
toolbar, select Dimension with the left-mouse button. By activating the Customize
dialog box by selecting [View] => [Toolbars]in the pull-down menus ,Dimension tool
bar can be displayed.
28. Select Linear Dimension from the Dimension toolbar

29. Pick the lower left corner of the drawing when prompted to specify the first extension
line origin.

30. Pick the lower right corner of the drawing when prompted to specify the second line
origin.

31. To place the dimension text, pick a point that is about 1.0 inch below the bottom
horizontal line.

32. To add the remaining linear dimensions, repeat the Linear Dimension command

33. From the Dimension toolbar select DiameterDimension in order to add the diameter
dimensions. On the first page of thishandout dimension the three circles as shown in the
figure.

34. Select: File => [Save As]in the pull-down menus

35. Save the drawing by snipping tool.

Part 2: Drafting Aids

In this exercise, drafting aids such as grid, snap, and object snaps will be used to create the
drawing shown below

1. Select File => [New] in the pull down menu

2. Select Template dialog box will appear. Left-click on Open on it.

3. Select Open with no Template Imperial in the dialog boxto set the default units to
inches.

4. To turn ON the GRID option, left click the GRID button in the Status Bar. It will
create a pattern of dots on the screen. 0.5 inches is the default spacing between grid
points now.

5. Turn ON the GRID option by left-clicking the SNAP button in the. Status Bar SNAP
option controls the movements of cursor to specified intervals. The default spacing is
0.5 inches between snap points

6. In the Draw toolbar use the RECTANGLE command button to create the two 5-inch
squares. While watching the coordinates display at the bottom of the screen use the cursor
to locate the opposite corners of each rectangle. To the right of the first rectangle make
the second one of about 1.5 inches

7. In the Status Bar right-click the OSNAP button. In order to display the Drafting Settings
dialog box, left-click on Settings

8. To allow accurate location of the cursor to point on objects, Object Snap is a powerful
construction tool to allow locations cursor such as endpoints, midpoints, centers, and
intersections..Check Object Snap modes: Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Intersection and
Extension.
BASIC CONSTRUCTION AND EDITING 9

9. Turn on the Object Snap.

To change the settings of the snap and grid parameters, the Drafting Settings dialog box can
also be used. To check the current settings of the snap and grid parameters, select the Snap
and Grid tabs in the dialog box.

10. Close the dialog box by Left-clicking on OK.

11. For the left object in the drawing,

a. Using the LINE command, construct the rotated square. Position the cursor near the
midpoint of each line to locate the vertices of this square. The exact midpoint of the
lines will be located by Snap to Midpoint option of the Object Snap.

b. Draw the lines from the corners of the big squares to the corners of the small square.
Exact positions of points will be located by the Snap to Endpoint and the Snap
Midpoint options

c. Using the abive points draw the small square

d. Select the Circle command in the Draw tool bar.

e. Select Circle by 3 Points in command prompt area, by typing 3p. Specify center point
for circle : 3p [ENTER]

f. Click on the midpoints of the sides of the small square as the points on the circle
(by left-clicking on the SNAP button in the Status Bar, you might need to turn
the SNAP option of).

12. Locating the parallel lines is tricky for the right object. Use geometric construction
concepts as described below to locate their positions.

a. At the lower-left corner of the square draw a circle of radius 1.0 centered.

b. From the upper-right corner of the square draw a line tangent to the circle drawn
in Step (a) above.

c. You may simply construct a parallel line or repeat the above procedure for the
other line.

13. Add dimensions to the drawings. By selecting linear dimensions in dimension toolbar and
sve the drawing
