LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

1. define composite function,
2. performs composition of functions, and
3. appreciate the relationship of composite function in the real world
situations.

C. Lesson Proper:

Functions in the Real World

Can you think of real world situations where you would input something into a machine and get a
different output?

For example, a toaster is a machine. When bread is input in the machine the output is toast.

In the table below list at least two machines along with their inputs and outputs.
Input Machine Output
bread toaster toast

What is a Function? - A function relates an input to an output.

ACTIVITY
Composition of Functions Relay (Chain Reaction)

Divide students in groups of four or five.

In groups of five, each member will be given a different function.
Each group should have one sheet of paper on which to work the problems.
To begin the relay, the teacher calls out a number.
The student with function number one evaluates his function for the number called by the
teacher; he must show work (at least substitution of the number into the function) and write
the answer to his step on the groups paper.
After evaluating the function for the number called out, that student passes the groups
answer sheet to the person with function number two; that student then substitutes the
value obtained by the first student into function number two.
After evaluating function number two using the answer obtained by the first student, the
paper is then passed to the student with function number three; that student evaluates
function number three using the value obtained by the second student.
This continues until all five functions have been evaluated using the value obtained by the
previous student.

ANALYSIS

Discuss the fact that they have just evaluated the composition of functions.

Definition:
The term "composition of functions" (or "composite function") refers
to the combining of functions in a manner where the output from one function
becomes the input for the next function.
In math terms, the range (the y-value answers) of one function becomes
the domain (the x-values) of the next function.

The notation used for composition is

(f o g)(x) = f(g(x))
and is read "f composed with g of x" or "f of g of x".

Explain the function notation for the activity given to students,

(k(j(h(g(f( # )))))) = answer.

Illustrative Example:
1) If f(x) = 5x and g(x) = x2 + 1, find (f o g)(x) and (g o f)(x).
2) If p(x) = x + 2 and h(x) = x2, find (p o h)(x) and (h o p)(x).
