Mean and Variance of Probability Distribution

This lesson plan teaches 11th grade students about mean and variance of discrete random variables. Students will learn to calculate, illustrate, and interpret the mean and variance of a discrete random variable. They will practice solving problems involving probability distributions through group activities calculating the mean of examples like rolling a die. The lesson will review key concepts and formulas like using the formula for mean: μ = ∑ X ∙ P(X) to find the average number of spots that would appear when rolling a die.

Lesson Plan in Statistics and Probability

Grade level: 11

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Illustrates the mean and variance of a discrete random variable.

2. Calculates the mean and the variance of a discrete random variable
3. Interprets the mean and the variance of a discrete random variable
4. Solves problems involving mean and variance of probability distribution

II. Learning Content

A. Subject Matter: Random Variables and Probability Distribution ( Mean and Variance)
B. References: Statistics and Probability
Belecina et. Al
C. Materials: Laptop, visual aids, Manila paper, pentel pen
D. Strategies: Discussion/ Cooperative Learning
III. Learning Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
B. Drill
C. Review
Given the value of the variables x and y, evaluate the following summations
X1 = 4, x2 = 2, x3 = 5, x4 = 1
y1 =2, y2 = 1, y3 = 5, y4 = 2

D. Lesson Proper

Start the lesson with an activity for the development in calculating the mean of a discrete
probability distribution.

Activity 1
The class will be divided into groups with 5 members each. They are going to answer / fill up the
table by following the steps given to find the mean.

Step 1. Construct the probability distribution

Step 2. Multiply the value of the random variable X by the corresponding probability
Step 3. Add the results obtained in step 2
Step 4. The value obtained in step 3 is the mean of the probability distribution X.
PROBLEM 1
Consider rolling a die, what is the average number of spots that would appear?
