Enrichment Lesson Plan

You will use this lesson plan with the enrichment group during interventions. If
this project is not completed within the 3 weeks, it is not a big deal. Students
will be given the opportunity to continue to work on it in their own classes.
Thank you for working with these students. If you have any questions, please
feel free to come ask me. I will try to make this as easy to follow as possible.

Animals and Groups

This project based learning comes from the Topic 1 enVision program with some
additional tasks that have been adapted from other project based learning
activities. Go through each activity. As one activity is finished, another one
may be started.
Week 1:
1. Have students help you list animals that form groups, such as ants, fish,
birds, and elephants.
2. Talk about why being in a group can help some birds survive. (Examples: Living
in a group may help birds find food. Being in a large group can protect birds
from predators. Birds can also huddle together in cold weather to keep
warm.)
3. Explain to them that you will look at different classifications of animals.
Once theyve learned a little about each animal, then they will chose one.
They will be able to use the information to help them start their research.
4. Show the page about insects Read it to the group. Then read the passage
about insects (every students should have a copy). Pass out the prove your
learning page. You can have the students work in groups on this, or you can
go over the answers as a group. If they work in groups, remember to go over
the answers after theyve finished. (You will follow step 4 until you have
covered mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish.) This may take the
first week.

Week 2:
1. Many animals live in groups. Students need to chose an animal that lives in a
group. This animal will be the animal they will find information on. Make
sure they didnt chose an animal that lives alone (sharks, jaguars, tigers,
leopards, bears, moose, foxes) Please write down the animals students
chose, so that I can gather the appropriate pages for their research.
2. You may want to pair up any students that chose the same animal. They will
be able to help each other on this project.
3. Pass out the What do you know? page. Give the students 5-10 minutes to
fill in this page. This page should have them brainstorming and writing down
prior knowledge.
4. Go over the Must Haves vocabulary. These are the topics that they will be
finding information on concerning their animals. Give an example for each
word.
5. Pass out the question pages that students will need to answer. Explain to
them that they will be doing research on their animal to answer these
questions.
6. Let them begin their research.
7. They will fill out the Animal Research Notes to help organize their
information, once theyve answered the research questions.

Week 3:
1. As students finish their research, have them fill out the Physical
Characteristics page, and Behaviors page about their animal.
2. Then, they can fill out the animal fact file for their animal.
3. They will create a poster about their animal.
4. Finally, they will decide bet ween 3 ways to create a presentation.
1. A diorama about their animal.
2. A Keynote Presentation
3. A Presentation using iMovie using the movie section not the trailer
section.
5. Let me know what presentation they decide to do. I will have guidelines for
them to follow.
