2 Preparation:
2.1 Prior to running the Liner, Smith Services, Completion Systems service personnel will meet
with all involved parties to discuss operations in detail. This discussion will include current
well conditions, dogleg severity and locations, hole angle, debris in hole and other problems
encountered while drilling the hole. The cement job including volume and displacement
should also be covered. Data from the last trip is to be collected as a reference during running
(fill inn table below).

2.2 This hook-up is for conventional, straight to moderate angle wells requiring a hydraulic
rotating liner. The advantage of this hook-up is the ability to rotate and circulate during any
phase of running the liner, and before cementing liner in place. A separate liner top packer
have to be run after cementing the liner if the cement does not hold the liner lap test. All
circulation pressures need to be determined prior to selecting shear pressures for all hydraulic
set or actuated tools.
2.3 Major considerations for this hook-up are:
2.3.1 Spacing the required tool shear pressures adequately to ensure proper operation of
each tool. There are four shear pressures required for this hook-up, the RPSB, BC,
STHR, and the LWPC. It is recommended that shear pressure spacing be at least 500
psi apart.
2.3.2 A pump capable of supplying at least 4000 PSI at tool down hole.
2.3.3 Circulating pressures should be kept below 70% of the shear pressure of the Liner
hanger, normally below 700 psi at tool.

2.3.4 Moderate to high angle well applications will require running sufficient weight of
drill pipe through transition zone to allow the minimum slack off load to be applied to
running tool to place tool in neutral or compression and to fully set the packer. The
STHR running tool NEEDS to be in neutral or compression at the tool to operate
hydraulically. The packing element needs up to 40.000 lbs compression.
2.3.5 The liner string should not be rotated any faster than 40 RPM max.
2.3.6 It is recommended that the shoe be of a ported design. If minor reaming or drilling is
anticipated adding blades and carbide dressing to blades and gauge diameter may be
necessary.
2.4 Rig site inspection. On arrival at the rig site Completion Systems service personnel will
inspect all equipment and service tools to verify condition, completeness and dimensional
accuracy. The inspection will include the following items:
2.4.1 Identify all equipment and check against shipping manifest and Job Ticket.
2.4.2 Verify that all connections are correct and will make up properly with the running
string.
2.4.3 Caliper all equipment, verify with inspection drawings provided by local Completion
Systems Operations and record.
2.4.4 Verify all setting pressures on applicable components before running liner and record
on inspection drawing.
2.4.5 Sort, inspect, and verify correctness of all safety subs, lift plugs, drill pipe rabbits.
2.4.6 Inspect cementing manifold, operate valves, check drill pipe connections, and install
drill pipe wiper plug into manifold (ensure that this is witnessed by operators
personnel).
Operator requirements:
2.4.7 Measure and record lengths of each stand of drill pipe on trip out of hole prior to
running liner. Rope off or lay down all stands of drill pipe not required to run liner.
2.4.8 All drillpipe /collars/x-overs used in the running string for the liner must be drifted to
min. 2.50 in.
2.4.9 Make sure the running string is clean and free of cement spears.
2.4.10 Be sure any x-overs used in running string do NOT have sharp internal edges /
shoulders.
3.1 Safety and information meeting: Prior to starting the liner running operation it is
recommended to have a safety and information meeting with all involved personnel. Major

safety topics are lifting operations, pressure testing, communication and proper hand over
during crew change.
3.2 Pick up cementing head: In order to limit the time spent while liner is in open hole, it is
recommended to prepare the cementing head and rack back.
3.3 Apply thread lock to connection and make-up float or guide shoe to first joint of liner. Check
to see if valve is functional. Follow proper torque control procedures on this and all
subsequent liner and drill pipe connections.
3.4 Run one joint of liner, or specified number of joints, and install float collar.
3.5 Run a minimum of two joints of liner, or specified number of joints, and install the ball catch
landing collar. Fill joints with drilling fluid.
3.6 Run three or four more joints of liner and pump through shoe to ensure that float equipment
is functional.
3.7 Run three or four more joints of liner and check that liner is not filling from bottom. NOTE:
Liner should not fill if floats are holding.
3.8 Run remaining liner, filling as required to prevent floatation (at least every 1000 feet).
NOTE: Liner should be run at a predetermined rate to prevent excessive surge or piston
pressures on the formation.
3.9 Set slips on the last joint of liner.
3.10 Pick up the Liner hanger assembly, this should already be assembled as a unit. NOTE:
Scribe a line on the lifting extension and tieback receptacle and insure that lines are always
aligned. This is to ensure setting tool does not back off during make-up of hanger to liner
string.
3.11 Inspect and install liner wiper plug onto the end of slick joint with the setting tool and hanger
assembly hanging on the elevators in the derrick. Use the appropriate number of shear
screws. See tech unit for shear screw count and shear pressure.
3.12 Grease rubber elements of the liner wiper plug with pipe dope prior to inserting the liner
wiper plug into the liner string.
3.13 Stab setting tool and packer assembly into top of liner hanger or liner.
3.14 Make-up setting tool and to liner or liner hanger. NOTE: IMPORTANT when making up
connection ensure that tong is not placed on the lifting extension. Tongs must be placed on
the liner hanger body and liner. DO NOT PLACE BACKUP TONG ON THE LIFTING
EXTENSION AND LINER, this will cause setting tool to back off of setting adapter. Check
scribe lines from step 10 for alignment.
3.15 Pick up liner 3 or 4 feet with casing slips in place and ensure setting tool is properly
connected to liner.
3.16 Pull the casing slips and lower liner assembly until drill pipe slips can be placed around the
lifting extension or setting tool handling sub.
3.17 Install fill sub (or connect the Top Drive if applicable) and fill liner and setting tool. If
possible it could be beneficial to break circulation to remove some of the air inside of the
liner.
3.18 Record weight of liner assembly with liner hanging in the drill pipe elevators. This is the
weight that will be lost when the hanger is set and supporting the liner.

Running Procedure Cemented liner with RPSB / HPSR hanger run on STHR tool
3.19 Make-up a joint or stand of drill pipe onto lifting extension of setting tool.
3.20 Slowly lower the drill pipe into the well. Guide the hanger assemblies through the BOP stack
(and any previous liner tops) to prevent damaging the hanger.
3.21 Run the liner into the well, filling drill pipe as required. NOTE: It is recommended that no
more than one row of drill pipe stands or 10-15 stands be run before filling drill pipe.
A. Run the liner at a predetermined rate, but not to exceed TWO minutes per stand.
Excessive rate may damage the formation
B. In some wells it will be necessary to circulate through liner periodically. In the event it
becomes necessary to circulate ENSURE THAT CIRCULATING PRESSURES DO NOT
EXCEED 70% of hanger shear pressure. C. In moderate to high
angle wells it will be necessary to run sufficient weight of drill pipe through transition zone
to allow the minimum slack off load to be applied to running tool as indicated in section 2
and notes in section 4 and to push the liner to TD.
3.22 Maintain right hand torque on the liner string while running into hole.
3.23 When making connections, lock the rotary or top drive insuring that left-hand torque is
released to the right downhole.
3.24 Liner string may be rotated to the right at any time during running.
3.25 In the event a ledge, a cuttings bed, a tight spot, or dogleg is encountered, the entire string
can be rotated to the right. NOTE: It is recommended the rotation be maintained in the range
of 5 to 15 RPM. Record torque while rotating.
3.26 Run the predetermined number of stands of drill pipe. These should be numbered and
checked against tally as they are run.
3.27 As the bottom of the liner is about to enter open hole circulate the liner volume (bottoms up),
WATCH circulating pressures and record up and down liner weight while running in the
hole. Also the liner should be rotated at several speeds (i.e. 5, 10, 15 RPM). Record liner
torque and speed.
3.28 If not already stacked, make-up cementing manifold to a single joint of drill pipe and set in V
door.

4.5 Set hanger by pressuring up slowly to the hanger shear value, when desired pressure is
reached, hold pressure for at least one minute. NOTE: Shear out of hanger piston will not
indicate on surface gauges.
4.6 While holding pressure slack off liner string. A loss of weight will be indicated on the weight
gauge as the second mark on drill pipe approaches the rotary table. Continue slacking off and
set down 10,000 lbs onto liner hanger to set slips.
4.7 Bleed pressure down after setting.
4.8 If a loss of weight is not indicated, the liner hanger did not set. Steps 5, 6, and 7 should be
repeated increasing pressure NO MORE than 250 PSI over original shear pressure.
Repeat until hanger is set.
4.9 Bleed pressure down after setting.
4.10 The setting tool is ready for release once the hanger has been set. The drill string should be
slacked-off onto the setting. IMPORTANT: The STHR running tool will not release if there
is any tension present in the drill string. Also there is no stroke in the setting tool.
4.11 Slowly pressure up drill-pipe to the preset setting tool shear value and hold for 1 minute.
Bleed pressure down and pick up setting tool to check for release. If tool is released the entire
liner string weight will be lost when setting tool is picked up. DO NOT pick up more than 3-
4 feet (excessive pick up may cause the cementing bushing or pack-off to disengage)
NOTE: Shear out of setting tool piston will not indicate on surface gauges.
4.12 If tool did not release, slack off an additional 15,000 lbs over the initial slack-off load. The
pressure may be increased no more than 250 psi over original pressure and hold for 1 minute.
Bleed pressure down and pick up setting tool to check for release.
4.13 If tool has still not released slack off an additional 10,000 lbs, if allowed. Pressure up drill-
pipe to previous pressure value again (depending on shear pressure spacing in system,
pressure may be increased another 100-200 psi if shear spacing allows) and hold for 1
minute. Bleed pressure down, leave open and pick up setting tool to check for release.
4.14 If setting tool has not released hydraulically after three (3) tries, then a mechanical release
will be required. Go to section 5.1
4.15 When pick up indicates that liner weight has been lost and tool is released, then set back
down onto top of liner hanger.
4.16 Pressure up on drill pipe to shear out ball seat in the ball catch landing collar, and blow out
ball seat. NOTE: This will indicate on surface gauges.
4.17 At this point liner rotation and circulation may be initiated and maintained as long as desired,
DO NOT exceed recommended rates. Record torque while rotating.
4.18 Break down pump lines and hook up cement lines. Mix spacer and cement.
4.19 If light liners are being run (less than 1500 feet). Apply at least 10,000-15,000 lbs to liner top
to prevent pumping hanger off of slips during cementing if a RCB cementing bushing is run.
A POC bushing will require considerable more set down load to prevent pumping hanger off
of slips.
4.20 After correct amount of cement has been pumped, drop drill pipe wiper plug and begin
pumping displacement fluid.

4.21 Reduce pump rate to 1-2 barrels per minute prior to drill pipe wiper plug reaching setting
tool. This will permit observation of the pump pressure increase when drill pipe wiper plug
latches into liner wiper plug and shears from the slick joint. NOTE: Make note of the
pressure increase and displacement volume after shear out. Correct calculated displacement if
necessary and complete displacement of cement.
4.22 When the liner wiper plug latches into the ball-catch landing collar, apply pressure to liner
wiper plug to seat to ensure that plugs have bumped and are latched.
4.23 Bleed off pressure and check for bleed back to ensure floats and plugs are holding.
4.24 Pull out of hole with drill pipe and lay down setting tool.
4.25 When running tool is out of hole, check for damage. If possible flush outside and inside of
setting tool assembly. Lay down, grease and pack for shipment.
4.26 Complete job report, noting additional data such as shear pressures, final displacements,
torques, etc. Ad improvement and recommendations if any was identified.
5.2.1 Shear pressures: The values for the shear screw varies with +/-5% but other variables
like temperature, well condition, friction influences the shears aswell. In order to compensate
for all these additional values a +/- 15% should be used when designing a Hook-up.
5.2.2 Circulation pressures: The max circulation pressure mentioned in this
procedure is 70% of the hanger shear pressure. Normally as low as 700 psi. The hanger can
only be preset when the differential pressure at the hanger exceeds the nominal shear
pressure. This means that for normal circulation down through the running string pressures
far above this at surface will not shear the hanger (due to pressure losses during circulation).
However, if the liner bridges off the hanger will see the full circulation pressure. The
consequence of a preset hanger depends on the situation, if higher circulation pressures are

required at surface, this could be considered. The consequences of a pre released running tool
is higher, and should NOT be exceeded.
5.3.1 Set down weight for STHR running tool to be in compression: as indicated previous the
STHR running tool will only function in neutral and compression. Additional compression
load applied from surface is required to overcome effects from: the liner hanging weight,
ballooning of pipe, piston/end loading effects from cement bushing or pack offs and hole
deviation and friction. Slack off weights in the range of 50.000 lbs or more at surface may be
required depending on the job.
