Purlin and Runner

The document provides the design of a purlin for a roof truss with a 4m span. It calculates loads from sheeting, self-weight, live load and wind load. An ISMC125 section is selected for analysis. Bending stresses from dead, live and wind loads are found to be below permissible limits. The section is also adequate in shear. Therefore, the ISMC125 purlin section is suitable for the given design loads and geometry.

PLAN

1.4

SECTION-A

Span of purlin = 4 m
Maximum spacing b/n purlins = 1.4 m
(A) Load Calculation:
(i) Dead Load:
Weight of sheeting = 0.17 kN/m2
Load on purlin due to sheeting = 0.17*1.4 = 0.238 kN/m
Self weight of purlin = 0.221 kN/m (Assumed size of purlin is MC200)
Total Dead Load = 0.221+0.238
= 0.459 kN/m
(ii) Live Load:
Intenisty of Live load = 0.75 kN/m2
Assuming that there is no access is provided to the roof. Hence Intensity of live load is reduced by 2 kg/m2
for each one degree above 10 degree slope.
Slope of roof w.r.t horizontal = 18 deg = 0.314 radians
Intensity of Live load = 0.75-0.02*(18-10)
= 0.59 kN/m2
Live load on purlin = 0.59*1.4 = 0.826 kN/m
Total Dead Laod + Live load = 0.459+0.826 = 1.285 kN/m
GEC Pvt. Ltd. Design By KC Date:

JOB No. / CODE :

Component of DL+LL normal to roof = 1.285*COS(0.315) = 1.22 kN/m

Component of DL+LL parallel to roof = 1.285*sin(0.315) = 0.40 kN/m
(iii) Wind Load:
Wind Loads are calculated as per IS:875 (Part-3) - 1987.

As per cl.5.3 of IS:875(Part-3)-1987,

Design wind speed, Vz = Vb x k1 x k2 x k3
Where, Vb = Basic Wind speed depends on locality of structure
= 73.61 m/sec (Located in Satna, MP)
k1 = Probablity factor
= 1.08 (As per Table:1 of IS:875-Part-3-1987 &
Considering Important building of 100yr life)
k2 = terrain, height and structure size factor
Height of structure from GL = 20 m
Considering Terrain category 2 and Class A structure (by the definitions as per IS:875-part-3),
k2 = 1.05
k3 = Topography factor
= 1.0
Design wind speed, Vz = 73.61*1.08*1.05*1
= 83.47 m/sec
Design wind pressure, Pz = 0.6 x Vz2
= 0.6*83.48^2 = 4180.7 N/m2
= 4.181 kN/m2
Wind Load on purlin member = 4.181*1.4 = 5.853 kN/m

(B) ANALYSIS & DESIGN:

The channel section is provided with sag rod at centre of purlin member.
No. of sag rods in purlin = 1
Effective length of purlin in Major axis, Lxx = 4 m
Effective length of purlin in Minor axis, Lyy = 2 m

(i) Check for Stress due to DL+LL:

Total DL+LL Normal to roof = 1.22 kN/m
Total DL+LL parallel to roof = 0.40 kN/m
BM in major axis = 1.23*4^2/8
= 2.44 kNm
BM in minor axis = 0.4*2^2/8
= 0.199 kNm
Let us try size of purlin -------- MC 125
Properties of ISMC125,
