The Distributive Property Notes

The document discusses the distributive property in algebra. The distributive property states that multiplying a number by a sum is equal to multiplying each term separately and adding the products. Several examples are provided of rewriting expressions using the distributive property and then simplifying. The document also defines numerical expressions, algebraic expressions, constants, variables, and coefficients as they relate to algebra.

The

Distributive Property

Notes
The Distributive Property
The Distributive Property: multiplying a number
by a group of numbers added together is the same
as doing each multiplication separately and adding
the products.

a(b + c) = a(b) + a(c)

7(3 + 5) = 7(3) + 7(5)

Example
Rewrite the following expressions using the
Distributive Property. Then simplify the
expression.
6(2 8)

6(2 8) = 6(2) 6(8)

12 48

12 + -(48)

-36

Example
Is (5 4) + (5 7) the same as 5(4 + 7)?

Prove it.

(5 4) + (5 7)

20 + 35

55

5(4 + 7)
5(11)
Example
Rewrite the following expression using the
distributive property, and then simplify:
1.5(3 + 2.5 10)

1.5(3) + 1.5(2.5) 1.5(10)

4.5 + 3.75 15

8.25 15
8.25 + -15
-6.75
Algebraic Expressions
Numerical Expression: an expression consisting of
numbers and operations.

Algebraic Expression: a mathematic statement that
combines numbers, operation signs, and variables.

Algebraic Terms
Constant: a quantity having a fixed value that does
not change, such as a number. (ex: 2)
Variable: a letter used to represent one or more
numbers. (ex: x)
Coefficient: the numerical factor of a term containing
a variable. (ex: the 3 in 3x)

3x + 2

Algebraic Expressions
Rewrite the expression using the distributive
property, and simplify:

3(4x + 2)

3(4x) + 3(2)

12x + 6
