Calculation of Inlet Bell Diameter

The document provides calculations to determine the dimensions of a sump used for pumping water. It calculates the inlet bell diameter as 1.95 meters. It then determines various clearance dimensions for the sump floor, walls, pump bay, submergence, and straight length based on percentages of the inlet diameter. The diameter of the pressure main is calculated as 3.15 meters to accommodate the total discharge flow of 18.92 cubic meters per second.

Calculation of Sump Dimensions:

Design Data:
Total Discharge = 18.920 m3/sec
No. of Pumps = 5
Discharge through each pump = 3.7840 m3/sec

1. Calculation of Inlet Bell Diameter :

Permissible Inlet bell Velocity (V ) = 1.3 m/sec

Q = AxV
* D2
3.7840 = x 1.30
4
Inlet Bell Diametre ( D ) = 1.93 m
or say = 1.95 m

2. Calculation of Sump Dimensions :

a. Floor Clearance = 0.5 * D
= 0.5 x 1.95
= 0.975 m

b. Side Wall Clearance = 0.33 * D to 0. 5 * D

= 0.5 x 1.95
= 0.975 m

c. Back Wall Clearance = 0.25 * D to 0.33 * D

= 0.33 x 1.95
= 0.6435 m

d.Width of Pump Bay = 2.0 * D

= 2.0 x 1.95
= 3.9 m

e. Minimum Submergence = 1.5 * D

= 1.5 x 1.95
= 2.925 m

f. Straight Length = 6.0 * D

= 6.0 x 1.95
= 11.7 m
3. Calculation of Diameter of Pressure main :
Discharge through main = 18.920 m3/sec
Permissilbe velocity = 2.43 m/sec
* D2
18.920 = x 2.43
4
Diameter of Pressure Main ( D ) = 3.15 m
or say 3.150 m
