Structural Analysis CE 309

This document discusses matrix methods for structural analysis. It defines degrees of freedom as the possible directions of displacement or forces at nodes. The number of degrees of freedom depends on the type of structure. It introduces the concept of stiffness matrices which relate forces and displacements. Stiffness matrices are assembled from individual member stiffness coefficients. An example problem is presented to solve for displacement at a node using a simple two-member structure. Flexibility coefficients are also introduced which relate displacements to applied forces.

What are Degrees of Freedom?
The number of possible directions in which a node can have displacements or forces is termed
as degree of freedom (dof). For various members dof is as follows.
Plane truss: has 2 degrees of freedom at each node. They are: displacement or forces in the x
and y directions.
Space Truss: has 3 degrees of freedom: displacement or forces along x , y and z axis.
Beams: have 2 degrees of freedom per node: vertical displacement or forces and rotation or
moment.
Plane Frame: has 3 degrees of freedom at each node: the displacement or forces in x and y
directions and rotation or moment at the joint.
Space Frame: has 6 degrees of freedom at each node: translation/forces along each axis, and
rotation/moments about each axis.
