ECB 3143 - Example 2
Example 2-1
The net volume of cut and fill for a section of highway are to be compute between station
215+00 to station 239+00. If the filling materials will consolidate by 15%, determine the net
volume of cut and fill that is required between station 215+00 to station 239+00. Based on
your calculations, plot the mass diagram and determine the balance point.

Example 2-2
A roadway section is 600 m long (20 stations). The cut and fill volumes are to be computed
between each station. The following table lists the station numbers and end area values (m2)
between each station that are in cut and fill. Material in fill section will consolidate (shrink)
for 10%.
(a) Determine the net volume of cut and fill that is required between station 0 and station 20.
(b) Use the data obtained from (a), determines the net accumulation of cut or fill beginning
from station 0 to station 20 and plot the mass diagram.
(c) Compute the value of balance point stations for the mass diagram for the x-axis.
(d) The free haul distance for the road construction contract is 150 m and the overhaul is RM
14/m3 station. From the mass diagram, determine the extra compensation that must be
paid to contractor to balance the cut and fill between station 9+18 and 17+19.

Example 2-3
The net volume of cut and fill for a section of highway are to be computed between station
101+000 to station 107+000.
(a) If the filling materials will consolidate by 10%, determine the net volume of cut and fill
that is required between station 101+000 and station 107+000.
(b) Based on your calculations, plot the mass diagram and determine the balance point.
Example 2-4
The following table shows the stations and ordinates for a mass diagram. The freehaul
distance is 180 m. Overhaul cost is RM 15 per station-m. Determine the additional cost that
must be paid to the contractor if the finished grade of this roadway section is level (0 percent).
