Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.
1 My husband was losing his sight due to diabetic retinopathy, a progressive disease
usually considered irreversible. Doctors and hospital had been a way of life for us since his
first diabetic coma in 1942, He had survived numerous complication of diabetes. He always
redounded from a crisis with a smile. But there was no smile now as he said, It means Im
finished as a photographer. Id rather lose a leg than my eyes. Thats one thing I cant take. 5
2 For five years, our life was a succession of challenges. Diminishing sight for Russel.
Diminishing budget. Bouts of eye haemorrhage, during which he had almost no vision.
Russel stumbled and groped his way around our Palm Springs house and yard.
3 Then, it was spring, 1974. We were sitting on the front patio. Russel was just sitting and
staring into space. I knew what he was thinking-he was finished as a photographer. He had 10
sold most of his camera equipment. We needed the money. I chocked back tears, desperate
to think of something to cheer him up.
4 At that moment, we heard a whirring of wings and a tiny bird zipped past us. It spun
around and hovered, its wings beating so rapidly that I could barely see them.
5 Its a hummingbird! Russel said. 15
6 How do you know? He could see light, some colours, blurred images directly in front
of him, and that was all.
7 I can hear it. Hello, little hummingbird. Where did you come from, pretty bird? Russel
could distinguish flashes of the brilliant red of the hummingbirds head and throat feathers,
glittering in the sunlight. 20
8 In the ensuing days, my husband developed a rapport with Little Redbird, as we named
him. Russel no longer sat and stared. His eyes were focused on the feeder he made for
hummingbird and a bird-shooter he was building to photograph it. The bird-shooter was
Russels own design, and ingenious of leftovers from his photo workshop. When the
hummingbirds flew in front of the camera lens, they broke a light beam, which triggered the 25
shutter. Russel was soon photographing hummingbirds, without being able to see them or
rather, they were photographing themselves,
9 Russel did everything by hearing, touch and feel. He was beginning to apply his other
senses. Meanwhile, other hummingbirds came. He learned to recognize them by chirps,
buzzing, wing-whirs and behaviour antics. But Little Redbird remained his favourite and 30
the most elusive on camera. Russel told me, Ill get him eventually, the Little Redbird. It
just takes patience. He had a new purpose, a greater challenge than anything he had ever
attempted when he had normal vision. I have never seen him happier.
10 How strange that Russels awakening from despair should begin with a hummingbird.
Russels photographs of the hummingbirds became a hit. The photographs were put on 35
exhibit Hummingbirds: Self-portraits. The exhibit was a great success, and this got
many people interested. I realized then the meaning of the miracle Little Redbird had
brought us the gift of vision without sight. It brought Russel out of his shell. There seems
to be no end to the marvels, great and small, that my husband could do. He has remodeled
our kitchen, installed new appliances, tiled walls. He has built an insect-shooter, planning to 40
add butterflies, dragonflies and bumble bees to his hummingbird portfolio. Things have
changed for the better, since the arrival of the hummingbird. Most mystifying is that
Russels eye haemorrhage has stopped. There have been no more trips to hospitals since he
began photographing hummingbirds four years ago.
8
11 Often I wonder at the explosion of Russels inner powers beyond seeing. How can this 45
be? But who can explain an awakening of spirit and mind? Who knows why or how a new
self is born in a man because he suddenly saw a hummingbird?
(Adapted from Readers Digest, July 1978)
