C Ip Glass Tank 73911

Glass lined tanks used for cleaning in place (CIP) operations are susceptible to damage from concentrated cleaning solutions and sudden temperature changes. Dilute caustic solutions below 1.0% concentration and phosphoric acid solutions at 2.5% can be safely used to clean glass lined tanks if temperatures are controlled and tanks are thoroughly rinsed. The CIP cycle should include a pre-rinse, caustic wash at 110°F, rinse, phosphoric acid wash at ambient temperature, and final rinse with a minimum of two complete spray patterns for each wash.

CIP GLASS LINED TANKS

Glass lining in tanks is susceptible to deterioration from exposure to concentrated, high

temperature cleaning solutions. A sudden change in temperature can cause glass lining
to shatter. Past experience has shown impingement from spray jets to have little
deleterious affect on glass lining.

* Dilute, standard TC-1 solution can be used to clean glass lined tanks. Caustic strength
should be maintained at 0.5% to 1.0% and not to exceed 1.0%. The low level of caustic
concentration will cause the caustic to rapidly react with CO2 to form sodium carbonate,
thus reducing causticity. Therefore, tanks should be well vented and thoroughly rinsed.

* If a sanitizing cycle is available with the CIP system, phosphoric acid should be used at a
concentration of 2.5%. The phosphoric acid should be at ambient temperature and the
system should allow for bypassing the acid circulation step if it is not desired in the normal
cleaning cycle.

Recommended
Solution Concentration Temperature (oF) Time (min)
pre-rinse - ambient 15
caustic 1.0%a 110 minimum 30b
rinse - 100 15
acid (phosphoric) 2.5% ambient minimum 30b
final rinse - ambient 15c
a
Caustic strength to be maintained at 0.5% - 1.0% and not to exceed 1.0%.
b
Minimum two complete patterns of cleaning machine(s).
c
Field tested to verify residual acid is removed.

See Brewing Design Standards for caustic and acid tank and piping specifications.
