Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to impart students an in-depth exposure to methods in geometric modeling and its applications
in CAD/CAM. This course introduces integrated approach to CAD including: Overview of CAD, numerical techniques for CAD, Computer
graphics and design, Principle and management of design data base system, finite element analysis and CAD, Design optimization. Along with the
theoretical presentations, commercial CAD software are also introduced and applied to create Engineering components and assemblies.

Pre-requisites: Basic Concepts of machine design. Engineering mechanics, computer operation and application.

2. Approximation B spline surface, composite surfaces.
Module IV: Solid Modeling 20%

1. Set theory.
2. Graph theory.
3. Regularized Boolean operations,.
4. B-rep modeling.
5. Sweep representations.
6. Spatial occupancy enumeration.

Module V: Analysis 25%

1. Mechanical assembly.
2. Geometric property formulation- curve length, surface are calculations, volume calculation, centroid calculation
3. Tolerances representations, Animation, Simulation,
4. Strategic factors in product design.
5. Robust design for product, Introduction to Finite element modeling and analysis.

Student Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of computer aided drafting and its applications.


2. To develop basic parametric relationships in the model creation process.
3. Use Strategic factors in product design.
4. Assimilate and describe generic aspects of CAD modelling
5. To develop and assess alternative theories of design analysis.
6. To characterize and employ appropriate advanced solid geometry feature creation methods and techniques.

The course pedagogy will include lectures, numerical practice, case studies, seminars and presentations. It also includes discussion on real life
problems related to design and analysis of mechanical components from various perspectives.
