Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) uses computers to simulate and study fluid flows. CFD solves equations that govern fluid motion and allows observation of flows without disturbing them. It enables understanding flows in ways not possible through physical experiments alone. CFD is useful for studying designs numerically before testing prototypes and can be used where instruments cannot access or would be harmful. However, CFD still requires expertise, significant computation time, and is usually used together with physical experiments rather than alone.

WhatisCFD?

Fluiddynamicsisafieldofsciencewhichstudiesthephysicallawsgoverningtheflowoffluidsundervarious
conditions.Greatefforthasgoneintounderstandingthegoverninglawsandthenatureoffluidsthemselves,
resultinginacomplexyettheoreticallystrongfieldofresearch.

ComputationalFluidDynamicsorCFDasitispopularlyknown,isusedtogenerateflowsimulationswiththe
helpofcomputers.CFDinvolvesthesolutionofthegoverninglawsoffluiddynamicsnumerically.The
complexsetofpartialdifferentialequationsaresolvedoningeometricaldomaindividedintosmallvolumes,
commonlyknownasamesh(orgrid).

CFDhasenabledustounderstandtheworldinnewways.Wecannowseewhatitisliketobeinafurnace,
modelhowbloodflowsthroughourarteriesandveinsandevencreatevirtualworlds.CFDenablesanalyststo
simulateandunderstandfluidflowswithoutthehelpofinstrumentsformeasuringvariousflowvariablesat
desiredlocations.

TherearevariousreasonswhyCFDisbecomingpopular,someofwhichare:

CFDallowsnumericalsimulationoffluidflows,resultsforwhichareavailableforstudyevenafterthe
analysisisover.Thisisabigadvantageover,say,windtunneltestingwhereanalystshaveashorter
durationtoperformflowmeasurements.
CFDallowsobservationofflowpropertieswithoutdisturbingtheflowitself,whichisnotalways
possiblewithconventionalmeasuringinstruments.
CFDallowsobservationofflowpropertiesatlocationswhichmaynotbeaccessibleto(orharmfulfor)
measuringinstruments.Forexample,insideacombustionchamber,orbetweenturbineblades.
CFDcanbeusedasaqualitativetoolfordiscarding(ornarrowingdownthechoicesbetween),various
designs.Designersandanalystscanstudyprototypesnumerically,andthentestbyexperimentationonly
thosewhichshowpromise.

CFDisnotyetatthelevelwhereitcanbeblindlyusedbydesignersoranalystswithoutaworking
knowledgeofnumericsinvolved.
Despitetheincreasingspeedofcomputationavailable,CFDhasnotyetmaturedtoalevelwhereitcan
beusedforrealtimecomputation.Numericalanalysesrequiresignificanttimetobesetupand
performed.
CFDisstillanaidtootheranalysisandexperimentaltoolslikewindtunneltesting,andisusedin
conjunctionwiththem.
