Math Lesson Domain 3

The lesson plan teaches 2nd grade students about the commutative property of addition. It reviews using doubles facts and introduces that the order of addends doesn't matter when finding their sum, such as 4+3 equaling 3+4 and both summing to 7. Students practice addition problems applying the commutative property, such as knowing 5+0 equals 0+5 and both equal 5. Formative assessments include class participation, independent practice pages, and a doubles memory game.

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Title: Commutative Property Date: 10/23/17 Time: 1:15 p.m.

Grade Level: 2 Subject/Topic: Mathematics

STANDARDS: CC.2.2.2.A.2

Use mental strategies to add and subtract within 20.

OBJECTIVE(S): Students will use commutative property of addition,

specifically a number + 0 and a number + 1, to solve basic facts quickly.

Students w/ whiteboards at desk. Commented [J1]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.

Intro: We have been working on strageties or tricks to solve math facts

quickly. 1) So far weve done doubles everyone please write a doubles
fact for me and hold it up review. Commented [J2]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.
2) and if we know our doubles facts we can use them to solve
problems that are near doubles. We also call this doubles plus one or
doubles minus one.
So, if I give you this: 4+5, what doubles fact would I use: Write it.
(4+4+1 or 5+5-1) Commented [J3]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.

Today we are going to look at 3 more quick tricks to use for facts. The Commented [J4]: 3a: Communicating with Students
Directions and procedures. Critical Attributes
first 2 are pretty easy everyone get out their touch math sheet
Commented [J5]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.
Show +0 always equals the other # - show on timeline dont jump at
all.
And if I have +1, I only jump 1 place give examples.
Now, lets look at this -
5+0, 0+5
3+1, 1+3
Warm up fingers to have them jump practice time line and touch
math. Commented [J6]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.

Show other Examples with word problems have kids do work on

whiteboard: Commented [J7]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.
Ex. Hannah and Alice went trick or treating On Saturday
Hannah got 4 lollipops and Alice got 3 choco bars. How many pieces of
candy did they get in all? Draw pic and addition sentence.
Now, on Sunday Hannah got 3 pieces of gum and Alice got 4 Jolly
Ranchers. Draw and do addition sentence. Commented [J8]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.
Show on Board review addends and sum.
Explain how it doesnt matter which order addends are in
the sum is the same.
So, if we know 4+3=7, we know 3+4=7. No need to learn both!
Other example: Mike saw 5 deer and Jenna didnt see any.
Mike saw 0 turkes & Jenna saw 5.
Pics and Addition sentence: 5+0=5, 0+5=5.
No need to learn both!!

Whiteboards away and books out.

Do page 170 together Commented [J9]: 3d: Using Assessment in Instruction.
Do page 171 on own then together. Remind students that for question Commented [J10]: 3d: Using Assessment in
Instruction.
22, remember what we did on Friday write it out step by step. Ask
students to volunteer answers and explain how they got their answers. Commented [J11]: 3b: Questioning and Discussion
techniques.
Do page 172 together.

Use of popsicle sticks to call on students to answer questions. Commented [J12]: 3b: Questioning and Discussion
techniques.

Summary review strategies we use to solve basic facts quickly. Commented [J13]: 3d: Using Assessment in
Instruction.

Play doubles memory game when complete to practice doubles fact. Commented [J14]: 3c: Engaging Students in Learning.

Return to desk to tear out math pages, write assignments in agenda

book, and get ready for recess.

ASSESSMENT/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: Informal assessments
